Well, we’re sitting here and sipping our beers, as the sun slowly dips behind the teeming jungle - overlooking the treacherous Pelagus Rapids, the site of innumerable battles between various headhunting tribes in years gone past… After Mulu and a brief stop in Miri, we paused overnight at the Niah Caves on our way south - a National Park again renowned for its caves. But whereas Mulu had the flashy, showy ones, Niah’s are of another interest altogether. The caves house the remains and paintings of the oldest known peoples of Southeast Asia - a skull has been found here which has been carbon-dated to around 40000 years, give or take. We spent a lovely afternoon trekking the eight kilometre roundtrip to the Traders Cave where over the ages, the locals have come to trade guano ... read more

at sunset the sky of the city of sibu swarmed of thousands of swallows. we travelled by boat for about three hours upstream the river Rejang to the village of Kapit surrounded by the forest. we stayed only two nights in the village and then moved to a longhouse about two hours deep in the jungle. we were guest of a nice family who prepared our meals and we walked in the forest and swam in crystal clear streams.... read more

We flew from Kota Kinabalu to Miri with the earliest flight with Air Asia. In half an hour we were at the long distance bus station, Miri by taxi. 8:30 AM bus left us at Bintulu at noon time and we arranged a four wheel drive to travel to Belaga. Belaga took about five hours. The road is muddy and horrible. Paradox, the sciens were breathtaking. We slept at Belaga one night at a primitive hotel but with aircon, Hotel Sing Soon Hing. (RM 28) Then we took the early morning boat to Kapit, five hours. This trip was our aim and we did it. On the river no boats, no noise, you feel the nature at a jungle river. From Kapit to Sibu we sailed three hours more on Rejang River. We spent the night at ... read more

Belaga is about as far as you can go up the Rajang river by either boat or 4WD. The Bakun Dam is 60 kms further but I dont really want to see an environmental disaster; the whole project is probably just an excuse for intensive logging. Belaga's isolation is attracting travellers and you see more orang putih in this village than in Sibu. The peaceful tranquility absorbs you though there is nought to do at night except drink a cold ale or rice wine at 1.50 rgt a shot. But Belaga is a base for long house visits and travellers tend to stay a few days and unwind. There are basically 2 ways to get into Belaga so I made it a round trip from Sibu. First leg was bullet boat from Sibu's ever busy marina ... read more

Mukah is a pretty coastal town about 160 kms from Sibu. The road to Mukah though is in a deplorable condition which is a pity because once you get there, there is an excellent new coastal highway that will eventually link Mukah to Bintulu. Because of the road conditions, I decided to take a boat part way and got on the 10.30 am very un-express express boat to Igan where the Igan distributary of the Rajang reaches the sea. There isn't much to Igan town; basically just a kampong, so I jumped on my bike and pedalled off towards Mukah abt 40-50 km away. Midpoint is the village of Oya and welcome relief from the sun under the shop awnings while I recuperated for the final leg to Mukah along the beach. Not much of a ... read more

One week into Ramadan and succeeding beyond expectations. For an orang putih who enjoys a beer in the afternoon; fasting is a mind control exercise to get through the day to celebrate with food and drink on sunset. Not easy but when you are living with your wife's family, its a must do. The reward comes at days end so with any luck I'll make it through till the end of the month. Meanwhile, I am settling into this bustling micro city on the impressive Rajang river which is to be my future home. Renovating a shophouse floor into hopefully a slick designer apartment. Long way to go but here is a photo of the cleared space after all the gerry built partitions were pulled out. Now have an envelope to work with so i'll see ... read more

"Not more flying".. i'm sure the majority of you can hear Katie saying that as we are trying to decide how to get to Sarawak from Sabah. We had 3 options, Boat, Bus or Plane. My Argument: The boat + bus take near 8 - 10 hours from where we were situated (Back in Kota Kinabalu). A plane took 30 minutes.. 2:30 at worst with check ins. ( I will admit at this point i was a little cranky.. we had just spend 10 hours on a bus..) Katie's argument: She doesn't like flying. So we flew to miri, a few valium's later for katie and me feeling better not having to catch a big long bus.. We kinda did a fly drive tour of Sarawak not having much time to pass through. We spent 2 ... read more

On the trail of the Headhunters We started our journey 7.00am on the Thursday and arrived at the boat jetty to begin a 4 hour journey out to sea and then up the Rejang river into Borneo's interior. We arrived in a small trade city called Sibu where the up river goods end up to be sold down river and unfortunately built up out of logging profits. After a quick stop off at the information centre to check out the best ways to get up river to the Iban Tribal Longhouse's and then further up river to the Orang ULU, we decided to carry on up river that day rather then stay the night. We traveled a further 5 hours by a funky boat shaped like an aircraft fuselage and powered by a mammoth 1000 horse ... read more
