My last visit to Macau was a great week-end back in December 2002...long time a go, a week-end spent eating, partying and playing golf. This visit was a little different....as you don't party the same way when you are travelling with an 8 years old kid! We had two main goals for these 30 hours in Macau...Cirque du Soleil and Fernando's! Both done, with great fun. First, the new direct flight from Saigon with Viva Macau, the local low-cost. Had no idea what to expect...ended up with an old 767, empty, but not bad...I was just worry that the airline could go bankrupt before our flight was due! So safe on this one! We dropped the luggage at the Westin Coloane before heading for lunch. I've been here before, but only to play golf... And we ... read more

Quick trip across to Macau. Clubs were epic. We left at about 7am and went for breakfast. Cab hit a casino worker on a moped however there were no injuries. We hung around, sober enough to know that our driver wasn't at fault. Police came but didn't take our statement. After making sure it was okay for us to leave we had breakfast (nothing was open so ended up with some plain crap!) then caught the ferry back to Hong Kong. Time to bed, 10.30am. Wrecked.... read more

Well, as you probably expected me to say, the Formula 1 was indeed, fantastic! I read that it was a quite a dull race to see on TV, but watching it track side in Shanghai was everything I imagined. The noise and speed of the cars was awesome and the atmosphere great. Lewis Hamilton is a superb driver and noticeably quicker at braking and down shifting into the corners. He drove like a man on a mission, occasionally locking up a wheel, but always making the corner. I really hope he keeps it all together and wins the championship this year; it is so good to have a good British driver to support and cheer for at last. Rubens drove well too so that made me even happier. I am asking myself now why it took ... read more

Macau Just a short ferry ride from Hong Kong is Macau Island. Although it is owned by China it has a strong Portuguese history which can be seen in road names, buildings and some of the local food. Previously it was a major shipping port as foreigners were not allowed to enter Chinese ports but this has changed particularly with the growth of Hong Kong as a business centre. Probably Macau’s saving grace is that gambling is allowed, whilst on the mainland it is illegal, so at the weekend Chinese pour in on ferries and planes to visit the casinos. The Casinos are immense and with big spenders, they take millions of Yen each year which has meant that Macau recently overtook Las Vegas by the amount of money it generates. The Casino Lisboa is the ... read more

This last Sunday I left Hong Kong for the Las Vegas of Asia...Macau. This is a fun, casino/hotel-packed, old Portugese special region where gambling is legal, hence why it is Vegas of the East. This time around, I was heading for the Venetian hotel, and it's so big I spent the whole day there! Having been to the Venetian in Vegas it was interesting to compare! They are both massive! After a 1 hour ferry and a border crossing, a free bus to the Venetian my friends and I were in a grand lobby, purchasing tickets for the Cirque du Soleil show that evening. We had a fantastic Asian buffet lunch for $200 (about £12) before wandering around 'Venice' sort of! We crossed bridges over the grand canal, and strolled along to St. Mark's square! Did an excursion to Macau overnight. We caught the hour long jetfoil ferry and stayed at the Hotel Golden Dragon. We also had tickets to the Cirque du Soleil show "Zaia" at the Venetian Macau Hotel and Casino. This was Geoff's first Cirque du Soleil experience, and it was frankly, amazing. The hotels and casinos weren't necessarily the highlight feature of the city but they were very impressive. The Venetian attached to the Four Seasons was like a city in its self with hundreds of shops, and restaurants. Even a mock up of a European city complete with restaurants with patios, moat, and a huge blue-sky ceiling to mimic being out-doors. The rest of the time we cruised the streets, checking out the world heritage sites including St. Paul's Church, and the Monte Forte and Macau ... read more

It was a short voyage on the hydrofoil ferry from Hong Kong to Macau but, avast me hearties, the seas were choppy. We had to suffer the sounds of retching passengers for most of the crossing! Thankfully, Kerry and I had good sea legs. Back on land at Macau Ferry Terminal, we passed through immigration and onto tourist information to make enquiries about last minute accommodation deals. We snapped up a bargain booking at the East Asia Hotel where the rooms were comfortable and remarkably spacious - a delightful change from the tiny dimensions of our Hong Kong hostel. You can't possibly mention Macau without talking casinos. What with a Wynn Resort, a Vegas Sands, an MGM Grand resort and a Venetian Macau, you'd think Vegas had led a full scale invasion! But what's most fascinating ... read more

Near the end of June I found myself humming and hawing over what to do when my Chinese visa ended early this fall. I threw around a few options: I could continue teaching English (hopefully at a University this time), become a student (studying Chinese), or travel somewhere else in southern asia (a return to India being my first choice). I went back and forth and forth and back, a bit unenthusiastic about all of my potential paths, and during all this pondering, it never occurred to me that coming home was also an option. When this thought finally entered my swirling pros and cons lists, a weight was lifted, and I realized that my mind, my heart, and my gut had already decided on the next step - home. A plane ticket was booked and ... read more
