This morning Pepsi and I flew to Macau and Justin flew back to London via BKK. The last thing Justin did when he saw him off was accidently break Pepsi's sunglasses. Pepsi was so sad the whole afternoon his $20 go-lo glasses were broken. We landed in Macau at lunchtime and checked into the Grand Waldo hotel. It was nice to be back in a decent hotel where we could have a decent shower and relax. The day was quite relaxing and we played some blackjack and explored around the Cotai area. The Venetian is one of the biggest Casinos in the world and it was huge, very similar to the one in Vegas. The new City of Dreams complex was very impressive and we had prioirty tickets to the Bubble show there. The bubble show ... read more

Armed with only our "Wikitravel" knowledge of Macau and Zhuhai, Hubby and I went ahead with our "semi" backpacker journey to these 2 places. Good thing he has a few days off from work due to the National Day celebration in China and also due to the Mooncake Festival. Day 1: We hired a private car to take us to Zhuhai which is a city in the mainland that borders with Macau to the south. Our specific target destination in Zhuhai is the Gongbei District because this is where the Macau border crossing is located. The driver picked us up at 6.30AM to avoid the morning rush and so as a result, the drive to Gongbei only took us 1.5 hours compared to maybe 3 hours if we left later on in the day. It was ... read more

Aloha Earthlings, I have sat down to write this blog entry three times now. I really hope I get through it this time... I’m not sure what to write anymore. The ‘strangeness’ of my life isn’t strange anymore. I have to think about is interesting, when it used to be painfully obvious. Life as I know it involves eating pig spine, dealing with typhoons, flirting in Cantonese, and putting on long sleeve shirts in 70 degree weather (SO COLD!). Okay... that does sound weird. They tell me the seasons are changing but I don’t believe it. We have gone from really hot and muggy to really hot and muggy with more clouds, whoopty-doo. I have kept busy since we last chatted. The big headlines would read; New Apartment Old Building!. . . New Stickers for a ... read more

I checked the weather reports last night, and it seems that a Typhoon warning is in effect - We've already seen results of it, and it is only getting worse. Since that is the case, I decided to see Macau a few days early. I think that if it were not for the weather warning, I wouldn't have chosen to go on a Sunday. Too busy. There were many families with suitcases on their way to Macau - sort of like going to the cottage in reverse. I would have definitely chosen mid week. I went to the Hong Kong-Macau ferry terminal in Sheng Wan to buy a return ferry ticket. There were so many different ticket sellers that I chose what seemed to be the cheapest one. First of all, it ended up being exactly ... read more

Day 429: Tuesday 1st September - Leaving China but not leaving China I have a two hour bus journey from Guangzhou to Zhuhai which is the city on the border with Macau. Macau, like Hong Kong, is classed as a special administrative region, so whilst it is part of China it is administered almost like its own country. Therefore, there are immigration controls whereupon I get stamped out of China, walk through the building and get stamped into Macau, without technically leaving China!! Macau is its own separate state in all matters apart from foreign policy and defence and like Hong Kong was handed back to the Chinese by the Portuguese in the late nineties. Nothing much is meant to have changed except there is a different country overseeing matters, and its relative independence to govern ... read more

Lou: Well Mark left you in Hong Kong, where we found it impossible to leave! Meant to stay only 4 days and ended up staying 10. Hong Kong was such a nice break from China - people didn't stare at us, shove us out of the way, steal our seats, hit us in the face with their umbrellas or try to rip us off at every turn, and everyone spoke English! It was also really nice to see some non-Chinese faces, as there are big Indian, Pakistani and West African communities in Hong Kong, being from such a multicultural city back home it is a bit weird when everyone you see is Chinese! We spent most of our time in Hong Kong in D-16, an Indian restaurant Mark and Nikki had recommended to us. This has ... read more

Hallo there! There is a large chunk of information I out of my bog at this moment, that’s the things we saw and did before we left the car. In all honestly I must confess that I don’t recall most of it without a map and without the pictures I took, which stayed behind when I left my computer in the car. I deemed the computer too heavy to carry along, based on my previous experience a year ago. What I’m writing about Laos leaves out all the glitz and splendor Ann has related in her latest website addition under the heading Laos and for anyone interested in the incredible things that await the curious traveler in that country I strongly suggest you look up www.vrolijksontrek.com. So I take up the story after we left the ... read more

... read more
