Temples abound in Vientiane, yet the municipal architecture is strictly French. Unlike Thailand's pseudo European functionalism though, these buildings look like they have been imported straight from Province, being as they are a hangover from French Indochina. Cafes and restaurants willingly perpetuate this theme. Populated with a sombre collection of French ex-pats, various emissaries and successful Laotians one is rarely reminded that Vientiane is actually the capital city of Laos. Even the Mekong looks curiously sedate as it's huge mass moves steadily on its odyssey towards the South China Sea. The set up is different here. The action is tucked away out of sight. The bars are welcoming enough but as soon as you leave you are affronted with a curious stillness that dissuades you from perpetrating any drunken antics on your journey home. Consequently Laos ... read more

Possibly the most beautiful and tranquil place I've ever been and definitely the kindest and gentlest people I have ever met, Laos was nothing short of amazing at every step. Jan 22 2003 Ramblin around old Indochine, looking and feeling in wonder, taking it all in, sucking it up through the bendy-top rainbow-striped straw of my soul. Too much to say in symbols, too much to experience beyond my reactive thoughts and emotions. One in six billion, one in the infinity of the universe. Nothing. Nothing but the overimportance I give to my own beingness, as if it were mine, as if their was an owner. Coming back to Thailand was a relief, a relief for my sore butt and dust clogged lungs. Back to smooth paved roads and the wonderful funky japanese rainbow buses from ... read more

The 12 hour overnight train journey from Bangkok to the Laos border would be a daunting prospect if it were not for the sleeper carriages. But that's not all... Too early to retire I discovered that they have a bar. Already relaxed from the two large Changs I had at the station I could now invoke fatigue at will. Where to sit? With the three English chaps to my right and endure one, maybe two hours of drunken football talk? I choose instead the kindly looking Thai gent sat opposite the young bookish guy reading a some hefty tome (It later transpired that he was indeed a student). Looking out of the window you might as well be trapped in a car driving counter-clockwise around the M25 if it wasn’t for the occasional palm tree thrown ... read more

After a couple of hours in Vang Vieng, while having a beer in a bar with a couple of Scottish girls and an Aussi, Tsipi spotted me. The next day Tsipi and I went Kayaking on the Mekong, but it rained a little too much for her so after the elephant cave (with a natural stalagtite the shape of an elephant) and tubing into the dark water caves for an hour with candles) we hitched back to Viang Vieng. The next day I heard by email that Kristen was to arrive in Bangkok on the 27th from Nepal and would like to see me a.s.a.p. so I jumped on a VIP bus, a private taxi through Vientienne to the Thai Border and then a night train to Bangkok. I didn't need to be asked twice! An ... read more

It was quite cold in Laos - for which neither of us was well prepared, but when we weren't in bed we toured the town and the temples bumping frequently into our friends from the boat. Richard and Martin providing much light relief - they were mad as *&$%! Tsipi decided to leave suddenly one morning, and I went to a local waterfall with Karl and Louise (Ire), a couple of very cute Dutch girls and two Isreali guys (also pretty cute). The waterfall was beautiful - very turquise with white limstone all around. Their pictures will look great!... read more

The Laos border was very straightforward, I took a boat over the Mekong and changed some money, getting enough Kip (Laos money) to fill all my pockets, without spending too much Baht (Thai). I got to the dock for the 2 day slow boat down to Luang Prabang and met up with Richard and Martin who had left Chiang Rai the day before me. The boat was like a very large narrow boat which was packed with many people. I met some great Australians, Kiwis, Candians, and Americans and we spent the time chatting, playing cards, and some of us were brave enough to stay on the roof in the sun with the beautiful scenery and whirlpools in the river while the guys who ran the boat told us we were not allowed. There was no ... read more

On arrival back in Thailand we returned to our previous accommodation in Soi 11 this time checking into a better room with power points, it is a necessity as Mark is carrying a digital camera and mobile phones lol. We then went out for a few beers asking the local tuk-tuk drivers where to go but basically just chilling out. The next day was a veg day, we wandered through the shops on Sukhumvit Road before arranging a flight to Chiang Mai in the nations north then booked a room at Eagle House Hostel No.2. We arrived in cooler, quieter Chiang Mai around midnight and decided to visit the night market down near the river, things were winding down, so we moved on to the Nice Illusion night club which was welcoming aberration in the quiet ... read more

It has been a busy 2 weeks since my last update. Using a combination of train, bus, boat and songthaew (bench in the box of pickup truck), I did a huge loop from Bangkok to Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, then in to Laos southward from Huay Xai through Pakbeng, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng to Vientiane and finally back to Bangkok. If that sounds like alot, well it is! NORTHERN THAILAND Watch my Northern Thailand VideoBlog ! I'm not sure what I expected of Thailand but I was surprised. At the border between Cambodia and Thailand, the single lane, hole ridden dirt trail suddenly becomes a fully lit, 4 lane divided highway with 7-eleven stores at each service station. In the farm fields, automatic harvesters replace ox and water buffalo. 20-year-old trucks ... read more

Someone told us to see Laos now before it's spoiled. Well. I'm glad we're here. The two-day boat ride boat ride from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang was filled with tropical greenery and the wide and muddy Mekong River. But unfortunately was also filled with culturally insensitive 22-year olds. The traditional Laotians find exposed cleavage and thighs offensive, much less bare shoulders. It was also filled with some travel tension between my partner and myself. Which was broken, though, by the trauma of Mike having lost ALL his US cash ($1300). As sad as I am that this occurred, I'm also just as sure that there wasn't anything I could have done to prevent it, having gone over it again and again, wishing I could make it better for him. But after some self-torture, Mike repeated ... read more
