Today is Nov 27, 2005. We are in Luang Prubang. On Nov 22, we took a bus from Mengla, Yunnan, China to Luang Namtha, Laos. The trip took a total of 6 hours, including the two immigration processes. The road north of the Chinese border is OK, but the road in Laos is terrible. Luang Namtha is a very small town, with one major street of about 500 meters. It is very quiet, very clean, and people are generally polite and soft spoken. We stayed at a guesthouse (for two nights) run by a Chinese family. The showers are powered by Solar Power. There is hardly any hot water for the first day, but sufficient for the second day. We met up with a French couple, Olivier & Ludienne and spent the next few days doing ... read more

On the way to Bangkok we stayed one night in Vientianne, the capital of Laos. Besides enjoying the french influence, namely the pain ou chocolat and croissant we payed a visit to the national sancturay, the That Luang. After finding many temple flowers I got a bit obsessed with taking a picture of one...... read more

Upon crossing the border from Chiang Kong in Thailand to Huay Xai in Laos, you immediately feel that you are in a different country. A simple long tail boat ferries you across a section of the Mekong River you could easily swim yourself, but the difference is palpable. One of the first differences becomes apparent when you change money- the Laos Kip is virtually useless. 10,000 kip = $1. Change $50 and you come away with a stack of kip looking like you just hit the slots in Vegas. The next thing you notice is the French influence- baguettes everywhere! We hadn't had any good bread since we left San Francisco, so this was a welcome sight. However, our first adventure in Laos would not be centered around food. We were off to the Bokeo Nature ... read more

There must be a word to describe the desire we feel for a place we have never been and only realize once we arrive. For our purposes this word is Laos. Laos was, if you’ll excuse a bit of shameless gushing reflection, love at first sight. Our journey into the country began with a two day (300 km) boat ride down the mighty Mekong, a slow moving cappuccino colored river that winds it way through Laos. The scenery made the long ride pass quickly; we were surrounded on all sides by luscious fertile forests interrupted only by rocky peaks and small villages. Stopping at the villages to load and unload cargo, animals, and people we had our first glimpse into the lives of the Lao people. Young children playing in the water, some with nets and ... read more

After the festival the girl from Australia went back to work in Kunming. So now it was only two of us left, Vajira from Sri Lanka and me. I had long since thought about using a float or a boat to travel in northern Laos. This is way more natural than going by bus, most places here haven't had road connection until very recently. The Mekong and all its confluents are an extensive network of waterways and many villages can still only be reached by boat today. I asked Vaj if he wanted to go down the Nam Ou river with me on a bamboo float. We agreed to try to built one in Nong Kiaw which is 65km from the mouth of the Nam Ou into the Mekong and 90km from Luang Prabang. When we ... read more

Hi everyone! Yes I have arrived in Vientiane, Laos ready for a new life, job and whatever life throws at me along the way. Yes sounds corny I know but if I am going to do things like have my first experience in Laos riding a moto during peak hour when all the kids are getting out of schools, running across roads, parents driving/parking more manic than usual...then I think it is fair to say I kind of ask for the strange things that happen to me....needless to say I have survived... I have been at work this week, but Wednesday was a public holiday for the That Luang festival celebrated at the full moon every November. Wed morning was the peak of the festival (at least the subdued spiritual peak, the partying festival peak was ... read more

Vietnam came and went in the flash of an eye... I barely spent 2 weeks there, before the call of Laos got louder and louder. Vietnam went a little like this : Arrived in Hanoi to be greeted by Sarah and a few of the rest. There was a brief Monkey Janes Reunion before all the swedes followed their own paths for a while. Hue was a beautiful city, close to a secluded beach. Old, very French buildings in an assortment of different colours. The Perfume River running through it to the ocean. We spent a couple fo days pottering around the town, taking in the Citadel, Hue is an old Vietnamese capital, so is full of history. Being reluctant to pay to enter old monuments, mountains, temples, or well anything that you are ‘supposed’ to ... read more

Asia » Laos » North » Muang Sing November 15th 2005

Muang Sing is a small village in a plain of rice fields just to the edge of the Golden Triangle in north-west Laos. In spite of govermental antidrug enforcement squads the locals still plant a lot of opium. And they sell it just about everywhere. When I walked down the main road old women approached me and between the jewelery and bracelets they offered, barely hidden in the palm of their hands were little packets of brown sticky stuff, an occasional 'Gansha' they whispered to make things clear... The main festival place was outside of town, some kilometers away on top of a hill, at the golden That Xieng Tung, a Stupa very similar to the big That Luang in the capital Vientianne. On the festival day the whole village was coming to the stupa. Everybody ... read more

Finally it was time to leave China. With almost four week it has been the longest visit to one county so far. My Laos visa was ready and my Chinese visa was due to expire. On the sleeper bus to the border I got some new company, two girls, from the US and Australia and a guy from Sri Lanka. The two girls are living in Kunming and teaching English language. Traveling to Laos is a possibility to renew the Chinee visa. Already during the bus journey toward the border I was looking forward to come to Laos. I had been to Laos two years ago and had only good memories from that time. Soon we came to hilly lush-green countryside, passing small stilt-house villages with children playing at the side of the road. The people ... read more
