Claudette was so enthused by her experience yesterday of giving food to the monks that we planned to get up early to do it again. Alsa, we overslept and were not able to give them anythin. All the same, a procession went past our hotel where a couple of old ladies hand out rice every day to the monks. We watched from our balcony as we finished breakfast. We then headed out to the morning market where the locals go to do their daily grocery shopping. Fresh fruit, vegitables, fish and fowl lined both sides of the street. There was even some live game. Some creature that looked like a guinea pig. I got to see some fresh tamerind. It looks nothing like the packaged mush I can get at home. Our next stop was the ... read more

We ended up catching up with Arno after we got a tuk tuk to the waterfalls. He was riding some of the way with one pedal but luckily some locals helped him out on the way to re-attach it. The big waterfall in Luang Probang is very beautiful but is crowded with tourists. Thinking that we'd be a bit different, we hiked to the very top and peered over (a daunting sight to say the least). After coming back down, we'd definitely earned a swim at the base of the waterfall, where the water is clear and fresh but extremely cold. Some of the boys (including a crazy Queenslander who was trying to climb up to the top) jumped off the rocks into the pool just below the waterfall, while i took some action shots. The VIP bus regurgitates the passengers for Vang Vieng onto the gravelly disused airstrip that separates the town from the highway. Disembarking, approached by tuk-tuks and leaflets for guesthouses - I choose the first, $3 a night with the hottest shower I've experienced in south-east asia I decide to stay at the Thavisouk. It's the 26th of December 2005, I plan to stay a few days and head to Pak Say and the four thousand islands fairly quickly. The town of Vang Vieng is small, a couple of streets lined with backpacker bars, low slung tables with comfortable recliner cushions popular in Thailand. Canned laughter spills out on to the dusty streets, the sounds of endless episodes of “Friends” being played on DVDs from restaurants I vow never to attend. Despite a heavy cold I decide ... read more

Today has been one of those hang out, watch movies, and eat lots of junk food days - yes, that's right, we're totally hung over! We're in the little town of Vang Vieng in Laos and have spent most of the past 5 days floating down the Nam Song river in tractor inner-tubes along with about 200 other backpackers! Apart from the relaxing pace of the river, the dramatic limestone scenery, and the colourful little dragonflies that invariably land on you, there is also another big drawcard for the "tubing"; the numerous bars. All along the river, there are little bars set up which are no more than bamboo platforms selling Beer Lao and Lao Lao (the local hard alcohol of choice). But wait, there's more! Many of the bars have flying foxes (zip wires) ... read more

Seeing a little of the countryside from road travel has been ... interesting! Took a bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng ... for the valleys and dips and curves through thickly rainforested areas. Alas, the cloudcover was low and I saw not a lot of the desired terrain. However, there are many other things to see in Vang Vieng ... !?!?! Known for its rapids and the tubing experience, many a tourist seemed to be enjoying this activity. This meant hiring tractor tubes and floating on them down the river. The "tubers" seemed very happy ... perhaps it was the sun? might have been the fun? or the many beer lao or "happy" food they had ... to be in the state they were in? After that they probably joined the many others that gathered ... read more

So, I read a quote recently that said something like "The hardest task to complete is the one that you have not yet begun", and that kind of pertains to this email. Through a combination of being lazy, and being in places without internet, i haven't written in too long and now find myself with the daunting task of catching up of the last two weeks. Crap, this is going to be long. Sorry. So, i ended off my last email in Pai. I spent a total of 6 days there, and the last few were spent enjoying the Laygatong festival where there's partying at night, and sending these huge lantern/hot-air balloons into the sky. Good times of course, but by the end of my time, i was ready to move on and get back to ... read more

The journey from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang passes through some beautiful scenery. It winds up & down hills, passed mist covered & jagged karst peaks. There are lots of Hmong people in their traditional brightly-coloured attire with zillions of babies strapped to backs. Their stilt houses built right by the road & hanging over the cliff edges. On arrival, we discovered that Luang Prabang, being easily accessible by plane, is full of tourists. This meant a trek around the hostels to find a decent room. Luckily we found Chittana up a little lane & bagged ourselves a decent double for $4 a night (we had seen some grotty ones for $7). Our guesthouse was promptly filled & we heard several people enquire, including one trying to negotiate the cost of the one available room at ... read more

We had arranged a day of kayaking with Wildside Green Discovery & initially there was a group of four but two pulled out through illness, so that just left us, our guide & two kayaks. We were due to go down some rapids & we made sure that they weren't the sort you find on the Zambezie, which they weren't luckily. We paddled a fair way down the Nam Song river over some tiny but fun rapids till we got to a place to land & then went trekking to a cave system under a mountain. Along the route we encountered people carrying huge sacks of sticky rice from the rice farm on the other side of the mountain. These sacks were sometimes as big as the people carrying them & we tried lifting one that ... read more

The 6 hour minivan ride from Luang Prabang provided outstanding scenery as we climbed and decended our way through the lucious green mountains of the region. We also passed through a bunch of small villages sporting bamboo houses and shacks. Along the way the people would return my waves with big smiles. Quick funny story...at one stop, Tamar went to the back of a restaurant to use their toilet and upon returning, she said something bit her. I look at her leg and it was a small scratch and asked her "what bit you as this does not look like a Mosquito bite?". She said a monkey. I said "What? There are no monkeys here." So I went in the back and behold, there was a little monkey tied to a tree. He was a ferocious ... read more
