So to get from Hanoi to Vientiane, Laos, we had to take the bus. An interesting ride, it was... sure lived up to it's name of the "Hell Bus from Hanoi". Gah! The first few hours were fine... our friend Tanya was on the bus... cool. Then, we switched... in the middle of the night... to this crummy smelly bus, half packed with giant boxes and sealed bodybags of goodness knows what (the border-cross busses here have a bit of a reputation, so we hear, for smuggling illicit goods. excellent). We had to wake up a few Vietnamese folk in order to get a seat... random bags of vegetables and other things were evvverywhere. We (luckily) found seats together... it was a packkked ship! And then our journey began... very rickety bus, but it was, however, ... read more

The morning view from Amphone Guesthouse was spectacular—limestone karsts in the distance, before the morning mist burns off. Breakfast at Lucky—omelet baguette, sticky rice with mango, pineapple, and banana, and lao coffee. Lao coffee is black and strong and so good. Walked out about a kilometer to the first cave after crossing a local toll bridge over the river. The Mini-Mags didn’t cut it and we couldn’t go too far into the cave. Walked another 5 km to Phoukham Cave. Long walk but lots to see. Steep climb up to the cave entrance. This time we rented a head-lamp. Were able to go a fair distance into the cave, very cool, very big. Got a ride in a “tuk tuk” (more like a chopper tractor with a home-made trailer for passengers) back to Bamboo Bridge. Crossed ... read more

Hey I'm in Vang Vieng again....I might kayak back to Vientiane tomorrow because it's the only place with an ATM and I need some bucks to get me by until Cambodia. I've been hanging out with all kinds of interesting people and I've been sharing a room with a gal from Colorado named Erin here in Vang Vieng. Anyways, in Phonsavon I had the craziest experience ever. I stayed at a guesthouse in the shittiest room so far, but it was cheap. The owner was an educated Lao man and he had some interesting things to say. He actually spent 3 years in a Lao jail for studying in France and writing about the 'Secret War' that went on in Laos during the Vietnam war. The U.S. government refused to admit that they ever dropped ... read more

Yet another shite bus trip later we were dumped at some guesthouse where the driver was clearly on commission and trekking up the road to find a bit of life and a decent place to stay. I ended up going for Malany Guesthouse right in the middle of Khao San Road (that sounds familiar dunnit?! lol), coz it was nice enough and only $5 a night so by 7pm I was all sorted and on my way for scran and a few beers. On my way round I bumped into 3 London lads - Pete, Chris and Jess so went on the piss with them. We met 2 Laos birds and a really camp lad called Nicky around town who took us to a Laos disco but the music was that bad that I had to ... read more

26th February-We managed to get up at 620am and caught a bus at 8am from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. I was well impressed that we managed to get up at such a ridiculous hour (In Luang Prabang there were signs everywhere asking tourists to respect the local culture and be quiet after midnight, consequently life started for the locals at about 6am everyday, by the sounds of things life started at about 4am for the flaming roosters!). We arrived in Vang Vieng after 6.5 hour bus journey from Luang Prabang- there were some killer views along the way, and I say that perhaps a little too literally because we were basically driving around mountains and some of the drops were huge. The roads were extremely windey and at times the “road” seemed to be none ... read more

Ok, so after Louang prabang, we went to a small place called Vang vieng which, again, was a chill out place! We went tubing (basically floating down the mekong river in rubber rings) and they had bars situated down the river and someone would stick out rope and pull you in...good times! it normally takes a few hrs but we managed to persuade some canadian guy to pull all 3 of us with his kayak...yes, he hated us by the end of the trip. this place was weird in that it played 'friends" in every cafe/bar u could see! at nightime, we ventured down to what's known as the "island", alls i can say is lots of drinking...lots and lots! ... read more

Valentine’s day! No girlfriend though I finally got my act together, had a stop pill, and headed out to the travel agency. Lecia (a Belgian girl full of fun) met me there and we joined about 8 others for the mini adventure of kayaking down the river. First stop was Tham Nam, a 500m long cave with a small stream flowing through it. We were equipped with headlamps nd tubes and directed to a ripe which disappeared up the river into the cave entrance, a wide gap in the rock rising barely a foot above the surface of the stream. Another group had joined us by this time, o we formed a line of about 20 tubes and 15 lights - there weren’t enough to go around - and headed into the darkness. After about 30 ... read more

We mostly rested during our 2 weeks in Laos. We had done non-stop sight seeing and traveling in Viet Nam and needed some down time. We traveled 4 hours North of the capital, Vientiane, to the city of Vang Vieng. It was the first time in months that we stayed in the same guest house for a week straight. Usually we only stay in the same guest house for 3-4 days. While fun, that can get quite taxing and you end up never feeling like you're "home" anywhere. To open the photo album, double click on the first photo. We mostly read, enjoyed the backpacker scene, drank in the amazing view and did grounding things like go the same restaurants everyday. The most active thing that we did while we were there was go mountain biking ... read more

Vang Vieng is packed with tourists, so it's totally set up with fun things to do. Yesterday the girls, I and Elle and Sebastian form Australia went on a hike with guides to a cave, which we had to navigate with torches, so I felt kinda like Indiana Jones or something. Then we climbed way up a mountain to the bottom of a waterfall to swim and cook lunch. The pool at the bottom was very deep so the guide was showing off and jumped from a really high spot. Sebastian is one brave dude, and he convinced me to go up and jump with him. They had to give me the big countdown form ten.....and what a rush! I've been talking about wanting to jump off something into the water for like a week now. ... read more

With a little help from a few American compatriots (Paul and Will from Minnesota) we decided that the Laos word for Hello, Sabadee, sounds like Suup Buuudy....Thus this is how I have started greeting people. Maybe it's only funny in my head, or it's one of those you have to be here to understand it. So all you get your butts to Laos... So after 8 great days in Luang Prabang I decided to head south to check out the backpacker town of Vang Vieng. My van broke down on the way there but luckily 3 Norwegians drove by and offered to give me a ride, leaving the other passangers of my van behind. It took them 12 hours to make the journey, while I got there in 6. few!!! Found a lovely room with ... read more
