We drive through the extremely thick smog and pollution. This was our last look at Hanoi and it's a relief. I didn't mind Hanoi but the pollution and the chaos was getting too much. Thinking back to how I had to scrub the filth from my feet just from walking around, I was somewhat glad to be leaving. Arriving at the airport an hour before our plane leaves usually would raise some anxiety but 10 mins we are through customs and begin killing time. After an extremely short flight and hassle free customs we are in Laos. The "bible" claims Vientiane is perhaps the most relaxed capital city in the world. They could well be right. We were greeted by very friendly locals and were never hassled to take rides or to buy useless crap. Once ... read more

Hi all, Commin to you loud and clear from Laos, and what a difference from Vietnam. Cam and I keep saying "what the hell were we doing in Vienam". Seriously, Laos is so beautiful, so layed back, so peaceful and we have only been here two days. Before leaving Vietnam, I shipped 20 kilos of items back to Australia from Hanoi on Thursday as my backpack was at breaking point. (will take 3 months unfortuantly tho) Got a great shot of the traffic in Hanoi, see timelapse shot.. Was a quick flight yesterday morning from Nam, only 50 mins from Hanoi to Vientiane (Capital of Laos). We were served bread and water on the plane, no kidding. But for such a quick flight, who cares. After arriving in Vientiane (a small city, but a city none ... read more

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I've finally made it over to the country on the top of my Asia list. My time is shorter, but I'm here regardless. I boarded a minibus in Hanoi which then proceeded to drive me out to the middle of the sticks which was slightly concerning. Luckily the shadow of a long bus poked out from behind a petrol station and I boarded with all of the locals. It was going to be a long journey ahead and the fact that my chair was stuck in the upright postiion was a hinderence , but not a stopper. Four hours later an abrupt stop awoke me from my slumber. The driver and several other passengers were outside hitting parts of the engine with a hammer. Starting to think I might never actually make it out of ... read more

On the Drive down to Vang Vieng there was a inkling of apprehension. Although there hasn't been any attacks on transport in recent years the sight of young lads on motorbikes carrying rifles was a little disconcerting. The driver appeared to have one eye on the road an one eye on the ridges (and no - he wasn't cross eyed), another source of concern. After six-ish hours on the non air-con bus (though it was sold as air-con) we arrived in Vang Vieng. We took the easy option and stayed in a guest house that was offered as we arrived. It was a small site on the side of the river a little way out of town - but in hindsight a bit far out. The huts were in a lovely position with a beautiful view ... read more

One of the less relaxing expereinces however was being on the public bus between Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng.. Reassuringly there have been no hold ups on this stretch of road, aptly named Route 13, for two years. However I have to say I was more than alarmed when the man sat directly behind me had a pistol in his back pocket and a rifle stacked up against the wall- what ever happened to a Pork Pie and a Puzzle Compendium to wile away a six hour bus journey....for obvious reasons I decided not to ask him this and strategically moved three seats ahead as in my mind I believed this would help me in an 'open fire' situation!? In all seriousness, this route is seemingly renound for armed men travelling on it, endorsed by the ... read more

Life in Laos is great. We bought our Laos Visa's that will enable us to have 15 days in Laos before we have to move on to Vietnam. We started our trip into Laos by all jumping into the back of a pickup truck while it was pissing rain. The truck took us down to the river ferry at the laos/thailand border where we crossed the Mekong river into Laos. There, we were able to get our passports stamped. The first thing that we did when we arrived in Laos was try 'Beer Lao' which is famous worldwide. We were soon able to see why, as it goes down like water and tastes very good. We bought a few Beers, and then jumped on to the slowboat. The slowboat was to take us to Luang Prabang, ... read more

August 22 After a 7-hour drive in unpaved, muddy roads; occasional toilet breaks in the bushes; surviving a road block (caused by a landslide) and heavy monsoon rains, we finally arrived in Vang Vieng. The laidback town of Vang Vieng, which is about 155 km north of Vientianne, is known for its beautiful caves. Backpackers, especially those who love the “great outdoors”, go to Vang Viang to explore the caves or to go “tubing” - riding on huge tractor inner tubes that float down in the Nam Xong river. But it was monsoon season, the whole area was flooded, roads are muddy, and caves are slippery. We stayed in a simple guesthouse, where each room has a bed, a fan and a bathroom. It’s basic really, but what I enjoyed most was the fact that we ... read more

well, here i am in a comfortable internet cafe in vang vieng- contrary to most of what lonely planet said! (no power, no internet my arse!) it's raining wonderful tropical rain outside and i'm nice and fresh after a HoT shower- (that's right lonely, they have hot water too!) and a nap in my $1 a night luxury room! i went tubing down the river song today and it was absolutely beautiful. found out about the wwoofing as well- turns out that you actually have to pay vast sums of money on accommodation and food (more than in town) in order to work there... so guess that's out for me. i'm keeping nowhere near budget, but it's ok because Benny is lending me some money til we get back to land of the ATMs. Might just ... read more

So I'm having trouble sleeping, its not the rock hard beds, I'm used to those, the left side of my body (the side I sleep on) is covered in purple and yellow bruises. Throughout my first four months of travel in south east Asia, scores of people said Laos was their favorite place they've been to. It took me a few weeks to see why and while I don't necessarily agree I can appreciate it. For example, you walk across the street in Vietnam, you may get asked for a taxi three times, if you have a backpack you might as well a bulls-eye on your shirt. I'm used to it, it didn't hit me that Laos people don't hassle you until I arrived in the capital with a backpack past 5 taxis, all laying down ... read more

We had a very spicy day today. Natalie began her morning with the usual twenty minute whine about aches and pains, and fever. Blah, blah, blah. Then we had the most indedicive morning ever. We walked around for an hour going: "where do you wanna eat??" We did manage to book our minibus into Vientienne tomorow. Woo!!! We also rented motorcycles. Watching Natalie ride a bike is equally as amusing as a bike without a motor. Muahahaha!!! We kept wishing accidents on each other, as it was raining and hard to control the bikes on dirt roads. No accidents. I was really looking forward to her scrapping up more body parts. Then again I would have had to deal with her bitching about them on our 20 hour bus ride tomorow. Maybe its better this way. ... read more
