We were joined on our two hour boat road by a French couple and we sailed along the Mekong in the little boat to Champasak. It was lovely to see the small villages by the river, which are totally different to the north and see the hundreds of fisherman who were at their office for the day, looked like very hot hard work to me! We arrived at the jetty (A bamboo raft with a chair on) in Champasak and could quickly see it was a pretty tiny place, the reason we had stopped there was to go and see Wat Phu; What is considered to be Laos’s most interesting and important site as it the ruins date back to the 9th and 12th centuries and shows the beginnings of the Khmers as it is dated ... read more

Champasak, Laos has the ruins of Vat Phu Champasak. These date back a ways and were built upon by the Khmer empire 900 years ago. The town was basically one road that led to the site. The ruins led up a hill with steep steps and it was hot as hell. Once on top the view was spectacular and weel worth the climb. There were several groups of Lao people that had come to visit including a family that wanted a picture with me. They were very nice and we spent 10 minutes trading cameras and taking pictures with each other. Afterwards I rode around the back dirt roads listening to Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding until the sky opened up and I was completely soaked. ... read more

Our journey to Laos started off in typical Cambodian fashion - we were squashed into a van with about half the population of Ban Lung and a lifetime’s supply of grain. So after driving around the town for an hour for some unknown reason we proceeded back along the bumpy, dusty road to Stung Treng with Khmer karaoke blasting in our ears. On arrival in Stung Treng we found ourselves dumped in front of a cafe with no idea what was going on and when we attempted to find out our enquiry was met with “Oh yes, you can go to Don Det”. Yes, we very well knew we were allowed to go to Don Det, but exactly how that was going to happen remained a mystery to us. About an hour or so later a ... read more

Itak, spet vstajanje ob pol sedmih. Sama, ker sta Irec in Anglez (predvsem ta prvi) vceraj pregloboko pogledala v kozarek z laolaotom in sta sele vstajala, ko sva midva ze basala nahrbtnike na ramo.

Spet ob pol sedmih auf in fotkanje soncnega vzhoda. Mega. To je to. To je the real Lao.

Thursday 22nd Time to leave Don Khone. We packed our bags and because of the late 11am departure had time to relax in our hammocks most of the morning. We noticed two little girls playing beside our bungalow and realised that they were going through the rubbish bag we'd left out, in case there was something of interest. They'd kept a colour brochure on Cambodia and left the rest of the rubbish strewn over the garden so I had to go out and repackage it. They were a very cute and happy little couple of girls. We know we shouldn't (because it encourages begging) but we couldn't resist giving them our last couple of sweets. At 11am the small open boat (more like a big canoe) collected us and our bags and we headed low in ... read more

Crossing the border from Cambodia into Laos was a happy moment. Some people were peeved about paying the $1 bribe but I was over the moon after our 4 day saga of being stuck in the cess pit of Cambodia so we (me, Emma and Sarah from Brisbane) marked our crossing with a celebratory can of beer. I instantly had a good feeling about Laos despite not knowing what to expect from 4,000 islands but I reckoned one of them had to be good seeing as there are 4,000 of them* Everything was more appealing - the landscape more breathtaking and tropical, the music more reggae and the people less in your face - you pass the street sellers by and they give you a nonchalant "sabaidee." You don't feel like you're sticking out like a ... read more
