Been raining on/off all day, that kind of light rain that soaks. Cant see anything of Mt Fuji, last time I momentarily saw it was on a bullet train coming here at 200+ KPH, selected action mode on the camera, pushed the continuous rapid photo button & off it went. Managed 1 reasonable photo. We purchased a Hakone 2 day pass for transport, much cheaper than individual tickets. First port of call was the Glass Forest Museum. Its French, what a grand building. It has a wonderful inner green garden It takes U back to Venice & has innovative glass deigns. The grounds have glass trees with lights, what a sight. Later I heard a smash in the souvenir shop, turned around & a Japanese lady knocked over an item. Time to go I thought. Next ... read more

Hi Guys, its 8 pm booked in for a hot steamy onsen this onsen is outside and yep, it is raining. Picture your own courtyard, bamboo fence, steam rising from the murky green water while hot water is trickling out of a lions mouth, a Japanese garden with manicured trees. Unfortunately it was too hot for my skinny body, so I lept out after 15 mins & jumped into the interior onsen near our bedroom. This one had a cold water tap, so on with full force it went. Now Im red & rosey at the compture with a hot cup of green, & I do mean green tea - tastes like dishwater, ah but it is good for you! Time to wake up Inge & get going in the rain for the day ..... ... read more

Checked out the market in Takayama as did Darren this morning. Darren is heading back to Tokyo and Rodney and I headed off to Odewara, the southeast corner of Honshu. From the train we did view the peak of Mt Fuji surrounded by lower cloud and snow. Had to take a local bus trip of 50 miniutes for Halcone. Very scenic forest and it was a reminder of heading into the Dandenongs resort weekend away. The weather predication is for rain for the next few days and it has already started tonight as we sat in the thermal outdoor pool plotting tomorrow's movements. The bullet trains are the way to go !! Hope Lynn Koskey is listening, they travel around 200+ KPH, Theres no waiting, trains are exactly on time and leave swiftly, feels unusal travelling ... read more

My Decision to go to Mount Fuji is where my trip to japan changed from a sightseeing holiday to a adventure. I Left Kyoto and took the bullet train to Mishima as the direction told me. Once i was in Mishima i was to take a bus to Kawaguchiko. The problem arose when i got off the bullet train in Mishima which is apparently off the tourist track because unlike everywhere else i had been in japan the signposts were only in Japanese. To add to the problem there were very few people that spoke English. So here is me at this station walking around aimlessly for like 45mins. Then i found the bus i needed and got on it, but still no English signs anywhere and bus driver has no idea what i am talking ... read more

Oh my God!! It is so beautiful here!! We are staying in a traditional Japanese room and there is a hot bath overlooking Mount Fuji. Today we took a bus up to the 5th station on the mountain which had the most amazing views, see photos!! We only had a few hours so after taking our photos we decided to go on a Bear Grylls expedition into the snow where no one dares to tread at this time of year..The Japanese only climb the mountain in July and August and never do anything at the wrong time! We wandered into the snow with our picnic and found a beautiful viewing platform after ending up 2 foot down in the snow in some places. Then I told Steve there were snow bears around and he got scared!! It ... read more

After two years, we're finally going back again to Japan! Older, wiser and with less stuff, this time around we're planning on conquering Fuji-san as well as visiting some roads less traveled in Yachimata and possibly Kujukuri. We'll be there from July 14th to 31st...more to come as the travel date approaches!... read more

Mount Fuji is probably one of the best known mountains in the world, so I couldn't go to Japan and not see it. On a clear day, you can see it from Tokyo if you go to an observation deck of one of their tall buildings. Clear days seem to be hard to come by, and I wanted a closer look anyway. My original idea was to climb to the summit and witness the sun rise over the top ofit. However, these dreams were dashed when I read my lonely planet. The climbing season is only from July to August. Climbing outside that window is not recommended because of all the snow and may result in death! So, I decided that a few close up shots would have to be good enough for now. Just as ... read more

As the saying goes, "You are wise to climb Mt. Fuji once, but a fool to climb it twice". At over 10,000 feet high, Mt. Fuji is a force to be reckoned with. Fuji, which means everlasting life, was once a place of spiritual pilgrimage for many. And it still commands such respect. Although the area around Fuji has been widely developed, Fuji itself remains untouched, a pure sanctuary and sleeping giant. Postcards of Mt. Fuji usually show a vast nature scene of forested plains with Mt Fuji in the backdrop. Or, a double figure of the mountain reflected in a large lake at sunset with a blossoming tree in the foreground. After seeing dozens of these pictures, when you actually get to Mt. Fuji, you realize the photographer must have found the one tree out ... read more

We have arrived at Fuji-Hakone guest house. We went on a cable car and ropeway up to see Mt Fuji. It was freezing near the mountain. It looked beautiful, it was big. We also went on a pirate ship around Lake Ashi. The next day it was very cold and wet, so we went to the hot springs. I went in a chocolate, coffee, and wine bath. We also went in the dead sea spa. I didn't stay in long because the salt made my skin sore and red. When we left Hakone we went on the bullet train. It goes very fast about 300km/hr. ... read more

We have moved on from Tokyo to the Hakone region that is the home of Mt Fuji. Mt Fuji is notoriously "shy", and is known not to come out of the clouds for weeks at a time. Our first morning we went on a circuit which included cable cars, 'rope cars', and a boat trip around Lake Ashi. As we were approaching the first peak of a mountain on the rope car the smell of sulphur gas became very evident. As we reached the peak on one side we could see sulphur gas bursting from the ground, on the other side their she was in all of her beauty.....Bronwyn with Mt Fuji in the background. It was the start of a great day which also included walks through gardens, a fascinating walk around part of ... read more
