We are leaving Kawaguchiko station with the first bus going to Mt. Fuji 5th Station at 9:40AM. It's already quite late since the regular season is just over (ends on August 31st). For the same reason, the last bus leaves rather early too, so we cannot go up and return on the same day, which means we have to stay on the mountain. Weather and mood are good, so we start to climb up aby 11AM. The trail starts gently and there are many many mostly young Japanese people on the track. After about one hour we have a first rest, talking to some monks sitting in the morning sun and smoking cigarettes (funny, ain't it?). They have just returned from the summit, and tell me how to beath the best on the way up, proving ... read more

Ah, Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan at 3776 m. One reason I decided to climb it is that one of my favourite restaurants back home is called Fujiyama. Also, after a few days of only Tokyo, I was itching to get moving. I planned it out perfectly. I would take a direct bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchi-ko fifth station, the most common starting point for the climb. I would rent a locker and deposit my stuff there. I would begin the 8 hour climb at 9:30 pm and I would arrive at the summit for sunrise the next morning. This would would enable me to skip the $65+ mountain huts. The next day I would rest and recuperate at the fifth station after the 5 hour descent. Then finally, I would catch a night ... read more

A wise man climbs Mt Fuji once, a fool twice Mt Fuji is one of the few mountains to have a proverb about it and it is repeated in a self-deprecating manner by those who have climbed it more than once. Self-depracation is the humour of the humourless, and generally comes across as an attempt at lame conversation. To each country its obsession and to Japan it is climbing Mt Fuji quite like avoiding all sorts of strenuous physical activity in India(self-deprecation?). Almost everybody in Japan has tried it or at least thought of trying it . I first visited the 5th station(the base point for most climbers) 4 years back and the thought of climbing it all the way to the top first crossed my mind. But the opinions about the climb have varied in ... read more

For two months during the year, Mt. Fuji is open to climb. Last Friday was "Opening Day". I say climb, but really I anticipated more of a hike. And to be honest, I don't know how to climb anyway, so it was either going to be a steep hike or it wasn't going to happen. My training consisted of some treadmill work and lunges; there were no ropes or crampons or caribiners. There's a saying in Japan that a smart man will climb Fuji-san once, but only an idiot would climb it twice. I'm not sure about the first half of that saying, but I can attest to the second part. I really had no idea what to expect, because I couldn't find anyone that had attempted the climb. My brother-in-law, Jimmy happened to be visiting ... read more

Today i am off to Lake Saiko to do some exploring & caving. Basically Mount Fuji is surrounded by 5 different Lakes. Lake Kawaguchiko being the largest. Lake Saiko is the second largest & also the most beautiful. In order for me to get to Lake Sai, i need to catch the retro bus. The retro bus only runs once every 30minutes until 12pm & then once every 1 hour thereafter. I catch the bus at around 10am. it takes about 45 minutes to get to my location & the journey is wondeful. The scenery is very picturesque! My first stop is BatCave. I am so fuckin excited right now, i absolutely adore bats, amongst other things like octopus & ducks, however i am looking forward to getting in the cave. Immediately i notice - when ... read more

This blog is dedicated to my good friend Andy - who basically told me that if i didn't go to Fugi-Q (which i bloody would've anyway) he'd disown me...Well that is my translation of it. ;-) It's 6am and i'm awake, bright & early and not even tired!...I get up, take a shower, check the emails and head out for an early breakfast @ the cafe. No 2,000yen breakfasts for me...haha After my double-egg, sausage, bacon, salad & toast special (I fuckin love double-egg), I head off to Kawaguchiko station to catch the mini-rail to Fugi-Q. Fugi-Q Highland is the next stop on the line so the journey onyl takes 5 minutes. I arrive at the park @ 10am. It is pretty empty as it has only been open for 1 hour. I head straight to ... read more

After a long train journey involving 4 changes & lots of stopping I arrive at Kawa' in the late afternoon. I get the free bus to the hostel, check in, take my things to my room, make my bed, the usual shit and head out to get some munchies. I'm freakin' starving marvin! There is a 24 hour mixed cafe at the end of the road and decide to eat there. I'm so hungry i end up ordering about 4 different things off the menu, accompanied with a beer & pop. I still haven't managed to get it into my brain that their portions are actually pretty big so I stuff myself silly. The bill turns out to be the most expensive yet! - I'm pretty shocked as we're in the middle of nowhere. Woops! I ... read more

Today was clear, cold, and my food poisoning had all but gone away, so took a day trip to go see Mt. Fuji up close. Have some great pics of the mountain from far away in Tokyo, and had some semi-clear views from Hakone, but today was focused just on the mountain. In reality, we were still about 30 mins to an hour away from the mountain when I took the up close pics, but it's so big that distance didn't matter. It was magnificent to watch it for a chunk of time and get your pictures in fast as the clouds passed by. Got to take these pictures at around 1pm from the roadside, then about 5pm just as the sun started to go down in the Fujikyuu Highland Amusement Park, which although is not ... read more

So, Tokyo...Japan's mecca of technology. The Party zone. The place where it all happens. Is what they say really true about this fabled city? I couldn't tell you. You see, I didn't actually get to see Tokyo. In hindsight I can laugh, and appreciate the things I saw, but at the time it was just one annoyance after another, and sometimes it was hard to see the enjoyable bits. Forgive me if the re-cap sounds a bit ranty, but thinking back to how I actually felt during that time, the main words that come to mind are overwhelming, frustrating and confusing. Thinking back on the better points of the long weekend I can say breathtaking, humbling, and interesting. There is balance, but at the time it felt as though I was sliding down a mountain, finding ... read more

Before leaving we were determined to see Mt Fuji and ended up spending 4 days by Lake Kawaguchiko. In the end we were rewarded with a snow capped view and took the opportunity to walk as far as the 7th station - only 3 stations from the top...but about another 4 hours climb. After that it was back to Tokyo, where we stayed in the compact and cool Riverside Capsule Hotel, Asakusa district. We visited the early morning fish market and enjoyed more sights around Tokyo including some beautiful parks before flying out to Sydney. For us Japan has been a perfect balance of modernism and tradition, encompassing unique charm and civilisation through its people and natural scenery. A wonderful place, we will miss its people ...... and onsens!! ... read more
