(Day 182 on the road)I arrived at the base of Mt. Fuji, in the town of Kawaguchiko, with the obvious intention of climbing the mountain. Every year, 600.000 people make the ascent, and this year I was going to make it 600.001 climbers. Before battling with the mountain however, I was fighting bad weather. I spent six full days in the hostel as it pretty much rained continuously. I didn't mind too much however as I could do with a rest anyway. I spent the days sleeping, reading my book, talking to other travellers, cooking, watching movies, going to the onsen, and generally just taking it very easy. Spending the time at the hostel and seeing many people come and go over the week made me realise one thing I had noticed before: I am much ... read more

Tokyo and around On the 1st September I left Vladivostok and caught the ferry to Japan. There were only 3 backpackers on board, myself, a Scot and yet another Aussie. All the rest were Russians who were going to Japan to buy cheap Japanese cars to bring home. One of them (Oleg, who was already quiet drunk) insisted on sharing his home made Vodka with us and I finally took out the hipflask (thank you Sky!) that id brought with me from Scotland. Poor Oleg drank most of it and we didnt see him for the rest of the night. We arrived safely in Fushiki in Japan and caught the bullet train to Tokyo which was great (Network Rail has a long way to go yet!). Ended up staying in the Tokyo area for about 2 ... read more

* We mentioned Japan was cheap .... True, unless you're a fan of fresh fruit and vegies. 1 x mango @ $24 + 1 x peach @ $12.99 + 1 x bunch of grapes @ $8.50 = weekly food budget blown on half a fruit salad. * More fruity facts .... each individual piece of fruit is custom-wrapped in a polystyrene lattice sock. Perhaps this explains the elevated cost? * Talk about polite .... Pull into a Japanese petrol station for a fill-up and afterwards you'll be personally escorted out to the street and recieve a deep bow for your troubles. * Japanese hospitality at it's best .... Homestay in a Minchuku and you'll have your hosts come a-knockin' on your bedroom door every half hour bearing treats. 1st knock: exotic chilled pink shots of a ... read more

"You are a wise man if you climb Mnt Fuji, but you are a fool if you climb it twice" as the Japanese saying goes i have to agree with that. Me my two brothers (sjoerd and David), my father (peter) and my neighbor (David) started at 4 AM in the afternoon in shibuya the fuji climb by eating loads of Ramen. Around 5PM we left shinjuku (tokyo) and drove by bus to the mnt Fuji region, the bus dropped us at the 5th station. After some stretching, some coffee, and etc we started at 9 pm our wise man climb. The idea was to climb straigth on through the nigth and arrive around 3 AM in the night at the top, just before sunrise. probaly because of the loads of ramen, we went so fast ... read more

Although this was two weeks ago, I still strongly recall the pain that was Mt. Fuji. At first, it seemed like the hike wouldn't be too bad...long and not really what you would call true hiking. But, then it got worse. Because we were hiking on a three-day weekend, there were so many people there. Rather than enjoying the hike up the mountain and the beautiful view when you looked down, it was like waiting in line for what seemed like forever. My favorite part (of course) was when we got to the top. The view was pretty amazing. For miles you saw mountains and rolling clouds below you, absolutely beautiful. The hike back down was easier because there were no lines, but it hurts your knees and legs quite a bit. My tips: Go to ... read more

Tuesday Haley Chelsea Amy C and I went to pepper lunch for dinner. YUM! Wednesday we went to Yokoska and met up with Navy men that Haley and Chelsea met. We were suppose to go to dinner on the beach but since we got lost and got there late we weren't able to since the beach was 1/2 hour away. Instead we went to a little bar and that owner was so cute checking up on us and making sure we were okay. Then they took us to a Korean BBQ were you get a raw plate of meat and cook it on a BBQ grill that is in the middle of the table. Really cool. After that we did kareoke and was a lot of fun. Had to catch the subway by 10:30 to make ... read more

Well, I officially conquered Japan by climbing the 3,776 meters of Mount Fuji! Definitely a checkmark off my “To Do Life List”. Ask me now and I would recommend the hike, I think it was the most amazing (and most difficult) thing I’ve ever done. Ask me ¾ way up the mountain and I would have probably called myself crazy and questioned every decision to hike 9 hours up a mountain. My favorite part was seeing myself standing above the cloudline. Also, sleeping in "bunk beds" made for 20 people. I now know how sardines feel. Literally... There were 11 of us, mostly foreigners from America, and the Other 8 Japanese people sleeping in the bunk with us were not too happy the "fat foreigners" were taking up so much space. Ha ha ha.... I feel ... read more

So the past 48 hours have been quite an adventure. To sum it up: No sleep, freezing wind, blindly climbing through clouds, rock climbing, still no sleep, the best moment of my life, then harsh sun, volcanic ash, slippery rocks, missing the last shinkansen to our next planned destination, trying our luck in Kyoto, realizing all the hostels and hotels are booked, coming to terms with sleeping in the train station, and then finally finding a vacant hotel room and a hot shower and SLEEP! Climbing Mt. Fuji was a really cool experience, although it got a lot colder than we expected. And the last 100 meters of elevation had very strong gusts of icy wind. The kind that you have to crouch down and brace yourself or get blown away. There were a lot of ... read more
