We woke up, slightly groggy from the night before. I think it was around nine when we got up. We showered, dressed, and finished packing up all our stuff. We left our stuff at the reception and asked them about what temples we should visit. No visit to Japan is complete without a visit to some kind of temple or shrine. We got the lovely blokes at reception to write out in Japanese what charms we needed. They were stars! Then we headed off to follow their recommendations. We walked for about ten to fifteen minutes following the river. We found the shrine, but since we were starving, we headed to the nearest Lawson's for breakfast. There was only one salami and cheese set, so we had to shared it. We sat outside on the steps, ... read more

We got up at eight o'clock, that's when the hot water was turned on in the hostel. We left the hostel around nine ish to head to the ferry port for our trip to Battleship Island. We took the tram for a few stops. The journey was pretty quick about 15 minutes. I think we stayed on the same tram and didn't have to change. We were so pleased when we saw a convenient store as soon as we got off the tram. We headed straight there to pick up some breakfast. We got the 'Breakfast of Champions' that we had discovered in Kyoto. It's a cheese and salami slice package and bloody delicious, it's cheap, too, only a couple of dollars. I also got a coffee and a mini-omurice thingy. I love omurice, but a ... read more

We awoke at the crack of dawn, after about four or maybe five hours sleep. We had stayed the night in a hotel close to the airport. It was really nice, not really a hotel, but an officetel, where they rented some of the apartments. Honestly, the apartment we stayed in was nice and bigger than the one I live in. They also offered a free pick-up and drop-off service to Incheon. Not bad for 55,000 won for the two of us, I think it was called Crown Guesthouse and I would definitely use them again in the future. We got to Incheon and found our check-in desks. It was still just over two hours before take-off, so the desks weren't open yet, so we queued up and waited for them to open, which they did ... read more

21stMarch – Nagasaki Our final port for Japan and we have been so impressed with their culture, cleanliness and hospitality. Another lovely Spring day, we thought the blossom would be out here in Nagasaki but we are still a bit early. Nagasaki is the capital of the prefecture on the island of Kyushu (the third largest) and it is where the second atomic bomb was detonated in August 1945 ending the Second World War. I think we knew we were going to be ‘templed out’ so our trip was out to the Shimabara peninsula. Religion still reared its head as in the city of Shimabara there was a castle built in 1625 which now houses a small museum with exhibits of early Christianity in Japan. Christianity was banned in 1587 and in 1597, 26 Christians were ... read more

Auringon lasku alkoi jälleen lähestyä joten eilinen yritys uusiksi ja suunnistin kohti köysirataa mt. Inasalle. Löysin yhden etsimistäni levyistä sopuhintaan ja sitten yhden u... read more

Monday-Day Ten Nagasaki- Kyushu Island We docked in this beautiful harbour side city and disembarked with the mission to find "The Peace Park" & Atomic Bomb museum and anything else connected with the nuclear bomb which destroyed Nagasaki at 11-02am 9 August 1945. We have docked right in the city and there were ample stalls set up with maps and information and willing English speakers. We purchased an all day tram ticket for ¥500 each and with some very clear instructions we set off. Within a 5 minute walk of the terminal you catch No5 tram at stop no 48 Oura Kaigan Dori, get off 2 stops later at No 31 Tsuki- Machi, cross the road and get on No1 tram to stop no 19 Matsuyama-Machi ( plenty of English signs and maps). Saturday, 18th May 2013 Three nights in Nagasaki City was just about right as I had ample time exploring the city's museums in an unhurried fashion. Before leaving my hotel this morning, I invested on the Nagasaki Tram Pass which would see me through a day's worth of unlimited rides on the nostalgic tram system. At 500 yen, this was considered a real bargain so long as I made more than four trips on the system (Note: At the end of the day, nine trips were made translating to 1,080 yen). From my hotel in Goto Machi, I boarded the tram heading towards the direction of Urakami Station which would bring me to the doorsteps of the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Peace Memorial Park. This museum was a moving tribute to the many who fell ... read more

Thursday, 16th May 2013, 10.30pm My ultimate trip to the Land of Rising Sun & I'm determined to complete it on a perfect note as I journeyed across Western Honshu & Kyushu. I boarded Jetstar Airways flight JQ 63 to embark on my 4,940km journey to the city of Osaka. For the Singapore-Osaka leg, I was onboard the A330-200 double-aisled flight which was able to accomodate 303 passengers on a 2-4-2 configuration. Flight time was reduced to a mere 6 hours & 30 minutes thanks to the direct overnight hop to Kansai Airport. Having just finished work at 5.30pm, I had barely enough time to rush home for a quick shower and dinner before making my way to the airport for the 10.30pm flight. My body was exhausted even though I was fully aware that this ... read more

Day 6 After another reasonable breakfast, even though there was no toaster, we made our way downstairs to the coach, which was parked on a nearby bridge as the road along side the hotel was too narrow. As we were leaving, we were waved off by two of the hotel staff - the thing to remember is the custom is to keep on waving until you can no longer see them! We had a 2 hour journey to Nagasaki, where we would be visiting the site of the 2nd atom bomb detonation. Along the way we were entertained by our guide Lim, whom we now realise is completly mad. Aswell as explaining to us that we were going for a "see look" at different places that day, and that when we stop for a toilet break ... read more

Arriving around lunchtime after another great experience on the Japanese railway system, we found ourselves on the station concourse enjoying the free entertainment provided by a dancing troupe in colourful (and short) costumes. These girls were like cheerleaders, but I'm not sure who they were cheering for. The public transport system???? Is that why the trains are so brilliant? Is there a show on at every station at lunchtime to boost staff moral?? After the show, we hauled our suitcases up and down the overpass stairs so that we could catch a tram to our accommodation. The hostel is good, however it is slightly more frayed around the edges than other places we have stayed. The staff were excellent, settling us in, and pointed us in the direction of a place to eat lunch. We ate ... read more
