The Welsh Embassy
These guys were travelling around in this camper van..of sorts for 7 weeks,!....it was really just a bit of hardboard over the seats. Driving around in Japan is reasonably easy as they do at least drive on the same side as us!!
Trying to get the sat Nav to work was more of a problem especially when we couldn't get Google maps to work. ... eventually driver and navigator worked in harmony.... Anyway it's given us a few days of doing our own thing and taking a few days to get to Kumamoto our next match with Wales v Uruguay.
There was a lot of talk while we were in Oita about the typhoon that they thought was going to hit the island of Kyushu and that Wednesday's game might be cancelled, but luckily for us it missed us all together but it did cause some horrendous damage further North.
We arrived in Kumamoto and gave the car back all in one piece and made our way to the fan zone to watch Ireland v Samoa. Before the match we went for a wander around and found a square where they had installed hundreds of bamboo lanterns and they were busy lighting the candles. These were so beautiful. Big thick bamboo with beautiful shapes cut into the shell to let patterns of light shine
through. They also had paper lanterns decorated by children. A lady stopped me and said that there was more to be seen towards the castle and in the moat.
I don't think many westerners knew about this as it certainly wasn't mentioned in the fan zone and we didn't see many non Japanese walking around. But it was so beautiful . Not sure what the celebration was for but I guess that they knew that it was my birthday!
Sunday....13th!
Went for a little trip this morning... literally! Walking along, then tripped over the raised bit in the middle of the pavement and went down like a good'un. Banged my head, but thought I was ok but gosh...there was a lot of blood!.. A kindly couple stopped and offered tissues etc. And he went to get help and some men came out of .. somewhere and everyone thought I should get to hospital as it looked quite a deep cut. Next thing I'm in an ambulance pointing to pictures to prove that I didn't feel nauseous, dizzy etc..
Usually when we go away, we just say we are English but the great thing about this week is we can
say we're Welsh and everyone knows what that means!..So when they asked me if I was English I could day No Welsh!...so long story short, tape, CT scan, big bill and told to go to the rugby. The nurse had already been out to David to say that we could still go. Luckily Sunday morning was very quiet in A&E. So we got to the rugby and I find out my seat is D13!!
It was a great atmosphere lots of Japanese supporting Wales but also lots of support for Uruguay. But I have to say that the best fun was watching Japan v Scotland in s local bar after we got back. Unfortunately we only got to see the second half but the cheers when Japan scored!!
Monday
Glad to say the tapes are off and just s bit of a site head, and some huge bruises on my shoulder and elbow.
Lovely day walking around some gardens and another Castle. Kumamoto castle is one of the largest in Japan but unfortunately after the earthquake in 2016 it sustained a huge amount of damage and it was only the beginning of this month that they opened up
A true adventurer
