My computer is on the fritz, so I apologize for the infrequency of my blog updates. I'm borrowing my flatmate's computer to write a very special message to someone who means the world to me. February 26th is my daddy's birthday. If you know me at all, then you know how much this guy means to me. But I'm not sure he's fully aware of it sometimes. I know you're supposed to normally save this kind of stuff for weddings and things like that, but honestly it's not looking like I'll be getting hitched anytime soon. My dad: My dad has lived an amazing life so far- he has had so many incredible experiences, and though not shy about sharing his stories, he's managed to remain incredibly humble. He's a constant source of information and inspiration. ... read more

We headed over to Kobe on a misty day, and decided to take the cable car into the hills. On Katie's suggestion that it was only a half hour walk back to the bottom according to the guide book, we set off back down some footpaths. About an hour later we came to a bridge and saw what looked like a nice route that skirted around the bottom of a large hill/mountain, so off we went. Soon we came to some steps that started to go back up, and after braving it for a while the following conversation resulted in us turning round: JdS: "Can you see the top?" Stevie G: "No, it just keeps going up...." A few hours later we emerged back into civilization trying to remember which locker in which train station we ... read more

Happy Halloween! Part of the funny part about me is I don't really enjoy being alone a lot of the time (as I'm sure you've noticed if you've managed to paid attention long enough). I do my best to avoid an empty room and leave it to the sleeping. I also tend to talk to strangers enough that I have them constantly around me when I travel. So even for me traveling isn't really alone. Granted I can make my own decisions. Like I did in Tokyo there's nothing stopping me from walking out of the restaurant and onto a bus with only a two second glance at where it's going. No one to tell me they're bored and want to do something else and no one to keep me places I don't want to be. ... read more

I love Jazz music but I don't get to hear it much out here. Right now I'm at a cute little after work place that's playing jazz over some awful electric buzzing in the kitchen (which I don't think anyone can hear but me). It's a really great relaxing place. I think all in all today has been a fairly relaxing day. After putting my pictures on a CD (which not only took 30 minutes but cost twice as much as I'm used to paying). I was shocked about the CD as I normally get it done in places with no where near the technology of Japan but who knows. I took the JR line (the cheapest train cause it's local and stops a lot) and ended up falling asleep before arriving in Himeji - the ... read more

Wow, has it been almost 2 weeks already?! We have arrived safe and sound in Kobe and tomorrow we depart on the ferry bound for China!! Sorry for the short break in entries, internet was unavailable at our hotel in Osaka and we couldn't find any wifi hotspots. Unfortunately in McDonalds you need to have internet with a specific service provider for it to work. After all the worrying about our hotel being a dump, it turned out fine! The room was a tad small, but still bigger than our closet in Tokyo. The bedding was comfortable, there was air conditioning, we even had a small television and fridge!! This was the first time we had a chance to watch a bit of Japanese tv and it was hilarious! I watched a show where 4 contestants ... read more

I'm so close!! We'll be in Japan in less just hours!! Japan! Whoa! So far in Japan, I'm doing a home visit where I'll get to hang out with a family for a couple of hours, I'm so excited! And besides that, I'm visiting a steel and alumninum plant, and then doing some independent stuff. I think a few of us were thinking of taking a train to Osaka on Saturday because they are having a huge festival there. Anyways! Since I'm sure you are just antsy as can be wating to hear of my adventures, here ya go! (Just so ya know, I wrote this a few days ago, and havn't had a chance to stick it on the internet. So it's kinda "old news" but still oh-so-good. September 8th, 2006 We lost September 7th. ... read more

Wednesday was Nicola's 30th birthday, so a bunch of us (teachers) went out for some karaoke fun. After being shown to our room, we immediately started tearing through the five massive song books. A couple of the girls, including yours truly, did a rather decent job with "Lady Marmalade". Everyone usually just sings/screams/hums along, so it's not as intimidating to get up and sing as you might think. Well, that is if you pick the right song though.. Maybe she's just more popular where I'm from, but I thought Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" would be a big hit. But NOBODY knew it (well, Rich helped me out a bit)! I think it was the quietest point of the entire night. Arg.. And then our time ran out before I got a chance to redeem myself ... read more

It's crazy that 13.5 hour plane flights don't scare me these days. I mean, after flying to New Zealand and back (twice), what difference does an extra 2 hours really make? Other than a bit of nasty turbulence, the flight over was fairly uneventful. AA didn't have the best choice of movies though.. I ended up watching Citizen Kane twice. After landing in Osaka, I located my bags and then breezed through customs. I must not look too threatening, as they just glanced at my passport, counted the number of bags I had, bowed, and let me go. First thing I had to do once I got through customs was to buy a phone card and give my housing agent in Kobe a call. He didn't answer unfortunately, so I was left wondering if there would ... read more

It´s the most glorious time of summer in Japan right now...summer vacation! My schools are closed for two whole weeks which meant that I finally have some time to explore Japan for an extended period of time. Last Sunday night I left Kobe on the night bus bound for Tokyo. The bus ride was an experience in itself. Highway buses are outstanding in Japan, seats that recline almost completely, complementary blankets, slippers and coffee and curtains on all the windows to keep out the glare from oncoming traffic so you can get a good nights rest. I imagine I would have slept quite well had I not been sitting next to a man who snored non-stop for the 8 hour ride. Even a few suddle whacks from my water bottle couldn´t stir him! Bright and early ... read more
