The Second Week in Japan Sep. 11-17 I have so much stuff to catch you all up on. I’ll post entries according to the weeks I’ve been in Japan. Unless there is something special that requires it to have its own post. Enjoy the following postings. (This is the same week that my last two posts were about.) On September 13 Mama took me to Moerenuma Park to see the big fountain. However when we arrived it had just finished displaying. Even though I did not get to see that I did get to see the Glass Pyramid. I can’t remember the name of the architect that designed it but the entire park was designed by Isamu Noguchi. The entire park is considered to be one giant sculpture. There are four main chambers in the Glass ... read more

I have now officially arrived in Japan. I arrived on Sept. 2 at approximately 9:00pm. Naoko picked me up at the airport and we took a taxi to her home. My flights went well. I got layed over in Chicago for two hours but was still able to make my connecting flight in Japan by about twenty minutes. It was close but I made it, and so did my luggage. I'm enjoying staying with Naoko. She's taken me to Sapporo station and we went shopping. I was able to get an electronic dictionary so that I can understand what words mean and can communicate better. Naoko is teaching me how to use the subway to get around so that I know what tickets to purchase. She also helped me exchange my money so I had money ... read more

I found out who my host family is. It’s Sayaka’s family. For those of you who don’t know Sayaka, she was one of my Japanese friends freshmen year, who studied at BVU for a year. I’m getting all packed up for my flight over. It’s quite difficult with all the new stipulations for the airlines. At least it will be safer. It’s almost time to say goodbye to my home for five months. I leave Sept. 1 and arrive on Sept. 2. Hopefully I’ll be able to write somemore when I get settled in a little bit. Not sure when that will be. I'll be sure to keep you all updated as much as possible. Joy's Japan Photos - Here's the link to my photo album. The password is the same as before. Last night I went to my first Japanese baseball game. This guy I knew got four tickets to the game provided by the manager of the home team. The home team around hear is the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. So all I knew was I was about to cheer for a team who loved there ham and wasn't afraid to fight for it. I hopped in a cab in order to meet them at the stadium. I said that I wanted to go to the Sapporo Dome and said baseball while I did the universal bat swinging gesture. We were off and away. Apparently the Sapporo Dome is close to my place. When I pulled up in the evening twilight I could see this futuristic marshmellow looming in the sky. I have always liked the Sapporo ... read more

I'm really digging it here in Sapporo. I've been very busy the past few days trying to figure this place out. I am hardly ever in my apartment because I am constantly going out in an effort to meet new people, both Japanese and foreign. When I am at home I'm usually studying Japanese. I have a TV, but I don't plan on getting it hooked up anytime soon. There is a VCR that plays VHS tapes. Hopefully I can get somebody to tape college basketball games and send them over to me. Saturday morning definitely was interesting. I woke up and walked over to the school. Everything was going great, but when I got into the building the door to the office was locked so I was able to deactivate the security system. You have ... read more

Today is my second full day in Sapporo and I am in love with the place already. I don't even mind how unbelievably hot and sticky it is here at the moment. I definitely haven't left summer behind yet. I'm all settled into my apartment, although my hard mattress has got to go. It hasn't mattered the past two nights because I have been too jet lagged and filled with Japanese beers to care. My apartment is in a great area with lots of stuff to do. There is an array of different entertainment and food options. Right next to my home is a place called Rocky's with a huge multi-story gorilla on the front of it. I am really close to the subway so I can just zip into the city center with no problem. ... read more

Well, to begin; Sophie, Viviane, Ninon, Petar (Bulgarian boy who, because he has such a hard name to pronounce we ended up calling him Charlie. He's Charlie, we're the angels) and me all met up in Shin Osaka on February 10. We took a train to go to Fukui Ken, this is the harbor where ferries leave for Hokkaido and we took a bus to get to the harbor. After waiting for a while, we got on to the Ferry, which to describe accurately is a CRUISE SHIP! Its really pretty, kung baga, "Pasensya na Super Ferry, tablado ka, Di na kita trip" It has a big shower room thats Japanese style with a big hot tub like an ofuro. It's actually the same as the shower room in the university, but of course this one ... read more

Better early than late. ) I’ll be posting my hopefully daily activities about what I am doing while in Japan. Orientation at Hokusei (university I’ll be attending) is on Sept. 7. March 16th, I left Brisbane with a group of friends for Sapporo in northern Japan. It was me, Hamish, Sarah, Scotty and Joanna. As we climbed in altitude through a clear sky, we flew over a large area of the great barrier reef and eventually the phillipines, what a sight. EVA air out of Taiwon ended up being a pleasure to fly with, and I was happy to have unlimited bloody mary's and watch the much acclaimed film 'walk the line' about johnny cash. ..... "and it burns burns burns, the ring of fire" ..... our night in taiwon ended up being pretty wild. The airline had put us up at a pretty flashy hotel, about 45 minutes out of taipai city. After our complimentary dinner and complimentary beers, we decided to jump in a taxi ... read more

Growing up in Australia I never saw real snow, even when I lived in England for 3 years, it only snowed once and it had all melted by the end of the day anyway. Maybe that’s why I’ve always thought of snow as idyllic and beautiful; and why I chose to live in an area of Japan that is covered in it for a good 5 months of the year. So you can imagine that an annual snow festival caught my attention rather easily. The “Yuki Matsuri” is held in Sapporo at the beginning of February every year and it has become one of the most popular festivals in Japan, a country where you can find a festival almost every weekend somewhere on one of the many islands. Sapporo isn’t as well known as Tokyo or ... read more
