The Togean Islands June 29, 2010 We are getting ready to leave the Togean islands and head back to Jakarta for the return flight home. As I woke up this morning to this quiet, the jungle to my left with the chickens high-stepping about and the tide coming in just four meters from our hut, I realized it will be a long time to get back to this sort of tranquility. For one, it just takes so long to get here, at least three full days of some grueling travel. Two, life at home is great, but busier than here where options of wonderfully limited. We’ve been in the Togeans for one week and have absolutely loved it. It’s odd to write about what we’ve done as the activities are more or less what anyone does ... read more

Blog 4 - The journey to Lembeh....... Since my last blog i have stayed in Kota Bharu, Kuala Lumpur, The crowne plaza hotel in Singapore (il explain that later in the blog) and on a bench outside Changi Airport and finally i am in Lembeh, Sulawesi!! So thats the easy bit out of the way, now the journey here was fairly broken up so wasnt too bad, i stayed in Kota Bharu(KB) for 2 nights, it was originally going to be one but then realised if i got the night bus then i would miss the England vs Germany game so changed it. Needless to say i know regret making that change as it was a complete waste of my time and money but oh well at the joys of hindsight!!! So from KB i took ... read more

June 22, 2010 Tana Toraja. Little Warning: Pictures are Quite Bloody. So, don’t look if you get queasy. I put the harder ones to take at the end. I don’t even know how to process this day. We traveled nine long hours to get to this area that is simply stunning: mountains alongside rice paddies, unique boat-like architecture, and smiling faces always ready with a “Hello Mister!” Supposedly, the people here are a bit obsessed with death, and we heard that they work to provide these elaborate funerals that last for days and take a year to plan. In the meantime, the recently deceased remains in the family house, and you have to be sure to say hello or goodbye to the deceased each time you enter the house. All of this ended up being true. ... read more

Het laatste verhaaltje vanuit Indonesie. Volgende week vliegen we alweer terug. Het is hier zo ontzettend mooi ... read more

This is my trip report to Makassar - South Sulawesi, actually this is my 5th trip to Makassar, but I still like it, I love to go to Makassar especially I like their BBQ sea food. I take Garuda flight from Denpasar - Bali to Makassar, it depart on time. On the air for first couple minutes was rough, then the flight just smooth… as well as the landing at Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar. When I step up into terminal building I felt that I was not in Makassar. The building is totally new with steal or iron around with glasses. Yes… it’s new airport, just operate 3 month ago. My friend already waiting outside the terminal. After take my bags, we walk to our car, then drive to the city. We drove through a new ... read more

5 hour boat ride from Wakai to Ampana. It was uncomfortable on the wooden boat, not much place to sit so you can have a lie down on a matt in the lower level but the locals already congregated there, so we just hung around wherever there is space. The locals gave us some corn to eat later and as we approached the main island of Sulawesi we saw a curtain of dark ominous clouds ahead of us which we hit in no time and rained heavily, luckily our packs were safe, it was dripping everywhere in the lower level but we stayed dry. At the port it was not raining and Ampana welcomed us warmly, a woman from the tourist office herded us to their office about 100 meters from the boat on the left ... read more

Puspita Sari is the name of the wooden boat about 40 meters long that will take us to the Togean islands, it used to be a metal ferry but now it changed its route which from the way it sounded when we asked seems to do it every now and then. Alex the owner of Melati Hotel assured us it is safe and not overcrowded. When we arrived at the port it's like a fiesta lots of people in the dock, we hopped in the boat, Lali showing us where our cabin is, it's small and a bit smelly and the crew who lives there still has their clothes there, they gave us the key to the room and they took some of their things out. The hallway is loaded with stuff, a king sized bed, ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Tomohon April 23rd 2010

Between the 3 of us Skoda the Czech, Tomas the Slovenian and me decided to hire a car and guide, Jeck to take us to Tomohon from BatuhPutih, we bid farewell to the French mother and son. About 2 hours it took us to get to Tomohon but before then we visited an old graveyard with sarcophagi that has intricate carvings, Minahasan ancestors are buried here I think it's called Waruga but I could be wrong. Then from there we went straight to the Tomohon market, it's busy but not overwhelming, we went straight to the exotic meat market and this is not for the squeamish! Right away we saw bats cut up into pieces, some in the process of being chopped up, these are big bats, I think fruit bats and they look scary with ... read more
