At the bus station for Bitung we found our bus, it's not full and we have to wait a long time before it left, maybe one hour. I quickly fell asleep soon as we left and I remember being stuck in bad traffic there was a political rally going on in one town and took ages to get past it. Everyone in the bus is annoyed.Maybe 2 hours later we arrived at the bus station in Bitung, lots of touts trying to get us to go with them they will take us to Tangkoko park for horrendous amounts, the bus conductor of the Bitung bus helped us seal a deal with a mikrolet, 5,000 rupiahs each we got dropped at the waiting area for trucks/pickups to Batuputi the town where we want to stay the night, ... read more

I flew from Banjarmasin to Balikpapan, I saw the Sky Blue lounge at the baggage claim area and investigated what it takes to use the place for my 9 hour layover, 75,000 rupiahs they say, meals included with wifi, tv comfy chairs to relax on, so after I got my big pack I checked in with them. Another good perk is they will check you in for your flight. 30 minutes into internetting their wifi conked out and I fell asleep in between feedings. It is now 3pm and the wifi server is still down, wtf? I asked again for the 10th time the staff if they can check what is going on, I was told it will be down maybe whole day and I can go to the other lounge and use the wifi there ... read more

Lensimme Sulawesiin ajatuksena matkustaa Etela-Sulawesin Makassarista maitse Tana Torajan kautta Togeanin saarille.

My first day in Tana Toraja was indescribable, It was the most different place I have visited while in southeast Asia. Astounding rice fields forming terraces that,if someone asking me what was the most particular place you liked in southeast Asia I would say the rice fields, is absolutely a must see sight with prestine scenaries and walking trails around the fields. Secondly, the odd but characteristics wooden houses of Tana Toraja known as "Tongkonan" ,meaning to sit, are the traditional Torajan ancestral houses. They are built on wooden piles, completed with layers of bamboos shaped in a curved arch and decorated with hues of red, black, and yellow carvings on the outside part. They are really unique and I just loved to observe such a different place that I have never visited in my all ... read more

Part 2 of the diving trip around North Sulawasi, after the black sandy volcano bottom and the crazy critter heaven that was Lembeh Strait, I was in for Bunaken island and its superb healthy corals, marine bio diversity and dramatic walls. About 35 mn by speed boat from Manado, the Bunaken National Marine Park was one of the country’s first marine parks and includes five islands one of these, the Manado Tue islands is an extinct volcano covered as all the other islands by a thick and lush forest. The main island where most of the resorts are located is surrounded by diving sites which have made this tiny piece of paradise world known among the divers so I was in again for a very relax holiday which essentially involves lots of time under the water ... read more

The word “muck diving” might not say much to most people but once you have tried it you never turn back! It is a little bit like opening a diving book that shows hundreds of weird critters, all with funny colors and shape except that you experience the real thing… Lembeh Strait to that extend is THE place to discover species that you have never seen before, so camera gears all set, ready for some national geographic type of experience! About two hours from Manado, driving trough North Sulawasie, and then taking a short 15mn boat ride lies the island of Lembeh. Its strait separating it from the mainland is covered with healthy coral reef and the notorious black sandy volcano bottom which with a lot of patience and the macro mode on reveals its secrets ... read more

So I guess I'll pick up where I left off. After getting sick in Rantepao and traveling for two days on hot buses and staying in filthy rooms, I got on the ferry to the Togean Islands. I was with a Spanish girl named Laia whose bus broke down and so she was on my bus. We shared a room in Poso and Ampana before finally making it to the islands. I should say that those towns were fine, lots of friendly people and everything, but I was sick and just not in the state of mind to look at the bright side of things. We stayed on a small island called Kadidiri. It was really really perfect. Nothing at all on the island except the three little resorts all on the same beach. No road ... read more

The last five days or so have been an exercise in going with the flow, which was my goal from the beginning of this trip. I flew onto the island of Sulawesi at night, landing near the metropolis of Makassar. My initial plan was to go into the city and try to find a cheap motorbike to buy on which to tour the island. But as I was getting my luggage, I met a Canadian girl named Rachel who was getting a night bus up towards the center of the island to Tana Toraja. And so I went on a 12 hour night bus, getting no sleep, and wound up in that very culturally unique area. They still build their houses here to look like the boats that their ancestors sailed over on from mainland Asia. ... read more

We travelled up to the Togeans with Tamil & Marusha via Poso & Ampana on the way. This was the second time we were to travel though an area that has seen sectarian violence in recent years so we were a little concerned but there was nothing to worry about, and we were greeted with the usual hello's and waves as we walked around the towns. What we hadn't anticipated was how long it would take to get up there from Tana Toraja.. it doesn't look that far on the map but it took a full 2 days travelling to get there and we were glad to be boarding the ferry across to the islands after a restful night in Ampana town (again where there is nothing to do!) The ferry ride was an uneventful one ... read more
