In keeping with tradition our journey from Flores to Sulawesi was.. err.. interesting to put it mildly. Like we said in our last blog we'd decided to make use of the Pelni Ferries that travel all across Indonesia to get between the 2 destinations. We had no ideas on what it would be like but when the ship pulled up we got quite excited. We'd joked about it being like a cruise liner and it really was... well the ship was... the journey itself was probably as far away from a cruise as you could be without being on dry land! Although there is the option of 1st - 4th class on these boats there was no way we could afford 1st class (around $US80 a ticket) and the 2nd - 4th classes are separate sexes ... read more

Dagelijkse kost in Indonesië.

It has been a wile ago since I last updated this travel blog. Traveling the remote islands of Maluku - Indonesia makes it very difficult to stay in touch. A dead slow internet connection and mobile phone service are only available in capital of Kota Ambon, a place were we didn't stay very long and we only used as a hub to get to the different Islands of the region. A full update on this great experience has to wait for a wile. First things first: Because Tana Toraja was one of my highlights last year, I didn't mind at all to go here again and relive it again with each other. As a result Anna could enjoy this (mostly on the back of the motobike, wile I could show of with my knowledge on the ... read more

We decided to leave Bunaken and see what else Sulawesi had to offer. We spent Monday in Manado on the mainland, which was a nightmare, dirty, noisy, traffic everywhere and road signs that were impossible to follow! We managed to do the essentials like Internet and buying eardrops, which we were both in need of badly. None of the hotels ,within our budget had a shower, instead they had a 'mandi' which is basically a tank in the corner of the bathroom that's filled from a cold tap then the idea is that the water can be used, by means of a scoop, to either flush the toilet or pour over your body in an attempt to wash yourself, there's no outlet for the water so it sits in the bottom going stagnant, nice! Oh well, ... read more

Weird happening on the flight from Palu to Makassar: the airport Customs confiscated my two DEET insect repellant canisters because they were aerosols and therefore “dangerous”. They didn’t confiscate them from my hand-luggage, note, but from my check-in bag! This was the seventh plane I’ve been on this trip alone and I’ve been on countless others on other trips and this is the first time I’ve had insect repellant taken off me. I argued till I was blue in the face that all aerosols are flammable, including the deodorant which they did allow, but of course its Customs so you can’t do anything at all. It really ticked me off because in the jungle you need spray repellants for your boots and socks (for leeches, ticks and mites) and its hard to find good stuff over ... read more

The late Douglas Adams, when journeying to Komodo, wrote something along the lines of "Everything we were told in Indonesia turned out to be not true, sometimes almost immediately." He didn't mean it literally of course, but its pretty damn close. After returning to Gorontalo from Nantu I had time to grab a shower because I smelled like a babirusa, then it was off to catch the night bus to Palu in central Sulawesi. It takes about 14 hours to get from Gorontalo to Palu and while there is a day bus its basically a waste of a day. The night bus would save me that time, and also the money for the hotel that I'd be paying otherwise, and I'd be able to get to Lore Lindu National Park a day earlier. Lore Lindu is ... read more

One day after our usual morning snorkel the clouds began to gather so we decided to go and explore the village after lunch. It was about a 30 minute walk from Lorenzo's. We'd set off another day but turned back as the temperature soared and there was little shade on the roadway. Today, however, with the lack of sunshine it made for a pleasant stroll. We spent a lovely afternoon speaking to the friendly villagers and letting the children practise their english on us. They loved it when we answered their text book questions such as "What is your name" Where do you come from?" etc etc. When we replied, they realized we'd understood their english and giggled shyly. They loved to have their photographs taken and were thrilled to see themselves on the camera screen. ... read more

The next couple of days we spent snorkelling, relaxing and eating. The coral reef was reached by wading through the muddy mangrove water then swimming about 100 feet. From there the coral dropped down a huge steep slope like a rock garden, so many colours and varieties, probably the best we’ve come across ever. The fish were amazing too, large ones, tiny ones and every colour you can imagine, all around you everywhere we looked. The one downside were the two trigger fish that were especially aggressive, both Sue and Stan copped a bite and I only just avoided one as I noticed it heading towards me with a nasty look in it’s eye, I kicked out furiously with my coral shoes and it backed off! We will always be wary of that area on future ... read more

We have just spent the last 8 days on the island of Bunaken off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Our flight to Manado was delayed by two and a half hours meaning instead of arriving at 7.50 it was 9.30pm. By the time we’d bought our visa and cleared customs it was approaching 10.30pm. We’d arranged to be picked up by Vasko, from Lorenzo’s, and taken to the port for the boat we’d charted to the island of Bunaken. We didn’t imagine he’d still be there waiting as we were so late but luckily he was. Malcolm and Sue, a couple from New Zealand, wanted to go to Bunaken but had no arrangements in place so Vasko phoned through to arrange a room for them and we all set off together. By the time we got ... read more

One of the more unusual animals in Sulawesi is the babirusa, which is a type of big hairless pig with four big tusks in the males. The lower pair of tusks grow out from the sides of the mouth like a regular pig but the upper pair grow straight upwards through the snout, curving back towards the eyes like horns, hence the name babirusa which is Indonesian for "pig deer". Because babirusa are quite large creatures and tasty to eat they are now very rare over the entire island. In fact the only place where they can still be seen with any regularity is at a place called Nantu Reserve near Gorontalo, which is where I headed after Bogani Nani Wartabone national park. The only reason the babirusa are still found in any numbers there is ... read more
