We spent the last night of our Komodo boat trip onboard the boat to save money on a hotel, unfortunately for us it was the end of Ramadan and at 4am the racket of call to prayer could be heard from 4 different directions at 1000 decibels! Bleary eyed and sleep deprived, fully loaded with backpacks, we found that the exit of the port was being used as a prayer area and were forced to walk/climb around a fence over the sea and across slippery sea defences. At least we had the pleasure of our first shower in 4 days, Andy and Roan, who sensibly stayed in a hotel, generously allowed us to use theirs. However we didn’t realise that boat grim had kept the mosquitoes at bay and Carla was promptly bitten several times. She ... read more

Claire: I thought I'd start for a change! Well I can safely say that today has been far the best day so far! I can not begin to describe how perfect today was! We arrived at the harbour at 7.30 and quickly realised that the pier was not a joke, and that you did actually have to climb on all fours in places to get from one wooden plank to the other, Indiana Jones style. Also that the holes dotted around the pier were not an artistic statement, more that the pier was in fact just falling in to the sea. After this mini-adventure we found our boat and our dive team, and were met initially by a guy a year older than us from Q.E boys! (Nice to meet London lads for a change!) There ... read more

Komodo is the reason people dive. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it any justice, because words cannot describe this yet-untouched underwater paradise. The corals are multi-coloured and as lush and vibrant as the vegetation on land, the schools of fish are varied and abundant, the sea turtles are peaceful and within arms-reach. It makes you understand where the fine people at Pixar got their inspiration for Finding Nemo. Only having a few days to enjoy the wonders this national park has on offer, the dive centre was my first stop after the bus arrived in Labaun Bajo. I planned to take advantage of my time here and booked two full days of diving with the lovely folks at Dive Komodo. The divemasters were knowledgeable and the equipment was in good condition ... read more

Ellie: We set off today to Labuan Bajo with a ticket saying "Lion Air" in hand. We landed in a propellor plane saying "Wings Air." Hmmm. Well, as a lady called Olga (who happened to be a Jehovah's witness) had advised us on Hoga, "TII": This Is Indonesia. We're here at least. We've had an interesting day, rather too interesting to be documented in full here because we're anxious to start tonight's film, but have successfully organised two boat trips to the islands of Rinka and Komodo with a company called "Dive Komodo," run by an Australian called Greg. We'll be doing two dives with probably around ten other tourists, all legit and PADI certified, promise. Our hotel backs on the beach where we've just watched the most incredible sunset and Claire had fun showing off ... read more

Nusa Tenggara - the stretch of Indonesia starting east of Bali and extending as far as Papau - is a delectable chain of islands linked by rugged peaks and valleys that have been dipped in glowing green vegetation and sprinkled with thatched-roof villages. We flew over this mesmerizing landscape in a very small plane, one with external propellers that looked more like something you'd pull out of a cereal box than an actual means of transport. But made it we did, landing at the very modest airport in Maumere. (I've seen convenience stores bigger than this thing. The luggage pick-up consisted of a very narrow conveyor belt, about 3m long with a guy at one end shoving bags through a not-so-discrete curtain. If you missed your bag's 10 second journey down the belt, you had to ... read more

9th day - Flores I'm not particularly happy about domestic flights, had a few rough one's in Ethiopia and have developed a bit of a fear for them, this one however was smooth as! I arrived in Flores at kimodo airport in the small coastal town of Labuan Bajo with the plan of getting an official taxi (one with a metre). There were no official taxi's to be seen however. I got in any old taxi, another chap invited himself too, he obviously knew the taxi driver and wanted my business. I said where i needed dropping off (my chosen travel agent, to organise my trip to see the dragons) but they dropped me at what was obviously the guys own travel agency. I like to plan things myself so I know exactly whats going on, ... read more

After almost two weeks in Labuanbajo, it was time to start heading out across Flores towards Maumere, the town we were to fly out of. We pre-booked a "travel bus" the night before, which are supposed to be a step up from the regular public bus, but not a lot more expensive. It was quite a comfortable and uncrowded bus, but it still suffered all the delays of a regular bus - we set off 1/2 an hour late, we stopped to get a tyre changed after only 20 minutes of travel, and we had to stop several times to clean up the bus after children threw up (a common occurrence all over Asia it seems). The journey was beautiful at first, winding through the mountains past lush rice paddies and ramshackle buildings, but when the ... read more

So as previously stated in my last blog, after one big fucking cunt of a bastard journey I finally made it to Labuanbajo. Pretty much the epicentre for organising a trip to seeing the Komodo Dragons on either Rinca or Komodo Islands. Rinca being the closest and apparently the more easier of the islands to actually see a dragon I opted to venture there. Naturally I had to a bit of shopping around Labuanbajo to find me the best deal. Ideally if you have friends and you are in a group then you save yourself some big bucks here as you can charter a boat together and go quids in on the costs. Unfortunately I have the haphazard approach of just plain scaring people thus making it difficult to make friends so I would have to ... read more

June 14, 2010: Boating through Komodo National Park Day Four After the events of last night, we are all feeling great with the vibe on the boat being one of warmth and camaraderie. And today has been one of the best days of the dive trip so far. We woke to a beautiful sunrise and jumped in for a 6:30 a.m. dive. The site was one of the best I had seen in a long time with sharks, lion fish, sea turtles, loads of everything really. After the dive and breakfast of pancakes and cookies, we anchored and swam about the ship. Or rather, we anchored and jumped off the ship. A couple of folks jumped off the top mast. I about lost it just jumping from the low mast. After that, we did another dive—the ... read more
