30 November 2009 - 01 December 2009 TRANSPORT: Bajawa to Bus Terminal by ojek--Rp5,000 Bajawa to Ende by bus--Rp50,000 (4 hours) Bus Terminal to Ende by ojek--Rp5,000 HOTEL: Hotel Dwi Putra Double, A/C, cold water, western toilet--Rp125,000 inc breakfast. The only place really to stay in Ende, it's not great. The A/C didn't work properly, the breakfast was cold rice and the owner slightly senile! The receptionists were friendly though (according to Dan) and it did OK for a nights kip. We made the most of a slight lie-in in Bajawa and after another sloppy breakfast we headed to Bajawa's bus terminal to catch the bus to Ende. We were told conflicting stories on when the buses left Bajawa and as one person had said 11 we decided to be there at 10:30. As we arrived ... read more

Have you ever come to Maumere? How is it like? Dusty? Really , Maumere is well known as a dusty town in NTT province, Indonesia. The town is the capital of Sikka regency which has 180 km square. In 1700s, the name of Maumere had not been heard. At the time, there was a region to deal in business among original habitants of Sikkaness, Bugis, Makasar and Dutch which named Alok Wolokoli. The region was controlled by Sadok Lodang from Sadipung ethnic. Because it was signaled as black market, the King of Sikkaness, Don Cormosemao da Silva ordered Mo’ang Juang to be commandati, a person who controlled harbor fee. Name of Alok Wolokoli changed into Alok Sikka. The eastern citizens name it Sikka Lotik or Little Sikka. Nowadays, the place has been a main part ... read more

27 November 2009 - 30 November 2009 TRANSPORT: Ruteng to Aimere by bus--Rp30,000 (3 hours) Aimere to Bajawa by "travel"--Rp30,000 (1 hour) Bus Terminal to Hotel by bemo--Rp5,000 HOTEL: Edelweis Double, cold water, western toilet--Rp125,000 inc breakfast Very friendly place. The downside is the breakfast which was poor. Nice location. Recommended! TOUR: Full day village tour by motorbike--Rp150,000 inc guide and petrol. Leaving the grotty little town of Ruteng, we headed further east to the next major stop in the village of Bajawa. First we had to get there, which was never going to be simple. We got a lift with John and Fiona (a couple from the Perama Tour), who were going across Flores by private car. They dropped us off at the "bus terminal", which actually meant waiting at the side of the road ... read more

24 November 2009 - 26 November 2009 HOTEL: Gardena Hotel The most popular place in town and really one of the only places. The others are pretty ramshackle. Gardena is OK price-wise and has a nice restaurant and outside seating area with great views of the harbour. Staff don't speak much English though, and rooms can be a bit unclean. After our "farewell party" aboard our Perama boat and a very decent nights sleep, we had a chance to explore our first town on our trip through Flores. Flores isn't exactly small, spanning about 700km west to east (actually, that's how long the "Trans Flores Highway is!), and 1.8million people, it's a pretty large island. It's also a very poor island and Labuanbajo, clinging to the western tip of Flores is no exception. When we had ... read more

Our great bus ride ended abruptly when we got to Sape in Sumbawa, this is the port where you catch the ferry across to Labuanbajo in Flores. We'd read that there was a ferry at 8am so when all the people told us it had already gone when we pulled up we thought it was the usual scam of trying to get us on their private boat so brushed them off. Finding anyone from the ferry office was quite difficult and all the time we were being told the ferry had gone, after about an hour of waiting around we found someone in a uniform who confirmed our worst fears that the ferry had indeed gone at 5am and the next wasn't due until 9pm.. or 8pm.. or 3pm... no one really knew for sure! Or how we got stuck in east Nusa Tenggara. As I’m writing this we’re sitting in the departure lounge of the airport of Denpasar, Bali. We’re not having a nice coffee, we’re not having any food. We’re not even having a plate of nasi goreng. What we are having is lukewarm water and cookies. The reason for this is that we had to leave our last few rupiah at the airport in Bima, Sumbawa for an unexpected departure tax and all the ATMs at this airport are broken. Since I left my US dollars in my backpack by accident and my backpack is in transit between planes, we’re stuck here without any money. Before I tell you the story of all the wonderful things we’ve seen and experienced over the past three weeks, I’ll elaborate on ... read more

There was only one thing for it now that I knew where both the hanging parrots and giant rats should be found - I went back to Tebedo the next evening (after yet another unsuccessful morning visit) and stayed the night in Frans’ house so I could be “on-site” as it were. There were still no parrots that afternoon (I wasn’t really surprised at all). I had taken my field guide to show Frans the birds. When he got to the page with the elegant pitta on it he exclaimed “oh, very expensive bird this one, 500,000 in the market. A couple of years ago people came with big nets to catch these birds to sell.” I asked if there were still elegant pittas in the Tebedo forests and he said no. According to Frans the ... read more

For the fourth morning running I headed up Potawangka Road in search of the Wallace’s hanging parrot. Its interesting going through villages early in the dawn because it gets quite cool overnight, so you pass the villagers all squatting in blankets along the roadside, like snakes basking in the stored heat of the tar-seal. This time I had some information from a person in town that the place to go was all the way up to the village of Tebedo, twice as far as I’d been up before, and there I could see the parrots in the trees about 300 metres past the village. But again no luck. It didn’t help that unbeknownst to me at the time, my motorbike driver took me right through Tebedo and onto the next village so I was in completely ... read more

I guess I should start this entry by contradicting what I wrote in the last entry, about Labuanbajo being an unfriendly town. I’ve been here a number of days now and the locals have gotten used to me walking back and forth around the streets looking for food and water, and now they’re always smiling and saying hello and asking how I am. So I have decided that its not an unfriendly town but rather a town full of unfriendly tourists. That may sound weird, me being a tourist myself, but I’ve watched the way most of them interact with the locals and they are just downright rude. Not all of them of course but a good percentage. If I was a local I’d be a bit sick of it all too. Its so flaming hot ... read more

The bus from Ruteng took an hour less to Labuanbajo than it had on the trip up. I’m not sure if it was better to get the ride over with faster so it would just be over, or if longer would have been better as it would have been somewhat less nauseating and we wouldn’t have almost been taken out by trucks on two of the blind hairpin bends. The chap in the seat in front of me threw up four times during the trip! In Labuanbajo I’m staying at the Gardena Hotel which is where most tourists stay - and there are a lot of tourists in this town (it being the gateway to Komodo). At this time of year, at least, its advisable to arrange your hotel ahead of arrival as everywhere seems to ... read more
