Hopefully no more stories about unexploded ordinances, wars, or killing fields. No guarantees, though, because we only have tickets through Australia and New Zealand; we don’t know where we’re going after that. From Cambodia, we went to Bali; the volcano had already erupted by the time we arrived, and life was pretty much back to normal. We met in Bali in 1991. We were both backpacking, Pete for six months, me for five weeks. We were in line to go through customs at the airport, and I was unsure of how to get from there to the beach. So I asked the stranger in front of me if he had a place to stay that night. He didn’t have any plans, so I asked if he wanted to figure something out together. He was game, and ... read more

We arrived in Sanur by 8pm, left our bags in our room and went for a cheap dinner in a local 'warung'. We came back to our room, which was nice although not the cleanest, and went to bed. At about 2am, I woke up to use the bathroom. In a daze (and not wearing my glasses), I thought I saw things on the floor but wasn't sure until I opened the bathroom door and turned the light on. A little shriek escaped my mouth when I saw a cockroach about 6 inches long crawling its way towards me. Shaun woke up and I turned the light on in the bedroom. I then realised that I did actually see black things on my way to the bathroom, which turned out to be happy cockroaches dancing around ... read more

We arrived at our guesthouse in Candi Kuning and had lunch there. The area was very quiet and green and there were lots of cages with beautiful birds hanging around the guesthouse. We had lunch in this beautiful room which looked like a wooden tree cabin, with a spectacular view of Bratan lake and the mountains. I wasn't feeling too good - the altitude upset my ears - so I went for a lay down while Shaun went for a drive on a scooter we had rented. Later, we went for a drive together and had dinner in a local restaurant - at a much better price than in Ubud. We didn't see many tourists around, so it felt like we saw some of the real Bali! On the next day, after a lovely breakfast at ... read more

Bali, the only place on earth I’ve ever been with all three of my wives. I even managed to go with the first two together, showing what a special place it must be. The island has a longstanding reputation for romance, allure and intrigue which may explain how all this came to pass, despite my only ever having been married the once. To solve the puzzle we’ll need to indulge in a spot of time-travel, skipping back a couple of decades to the days when I was still genuinely young, free and single. Youthful exuberance had seen me jack in the day-job and head off adventuring round the world, the spirit of freedom leading me to first let my hair grow unchecked, and then, in a moment of madness, to shave it off entirely. Interestingly this ... read more

In French this time because I need to stop being unfair to my French friends and family (or just stop being lazy as apparently lazy me writes in English!).

We had 2 days to explore the wonderful island/country of Singapore, an incredible modern and dynamic city. The first day we arrived and went directly to Little India where we sat under cover enjoying some delicious Indian food (not Darold’s favorite but we had no other choice as the buckets of rain fell) that was simply served on a sheet of paper. Our day was filled with shopping in street markets, riding the flyer (a large Ferris Wheel with incredible views), watching the light shows on both sides of the unique and amazing development of the Marina Bay Sands (3 towers with what looks like a huge cargo ship resting above the towers) and ending our evening in Chinatown for dinner and nightlife. The next day we took a river cruise to see the famous SeaLion ... read more

373 days. 34,925km. More than 91 cities in 11 countries. The longest and final chapter of the trilogy is now complete. The entire odyssey is now over. First Latin America, then Europe, now Asia. The last leg of my journey around the world was only supposed to be nine months long; I ended up travelling around Asia for just over a year. Perhaps it is unsurprising that things took a bit longer than planned; I spent three months in India alone and it was fanciful to think I could've 'done' China in just one month - I ended up taking two. Considering that my entire trip has taken over two years, when I think about everywhere I went, I had travelled fast - probably faster than you should when travelling for such a long time. So ... read more

Bali. Everyone has been there. A common perception of the place and certainly one that I had, was that it was a place full of obnoxious young Aussies and Kiwis there to get f*cked up. The Magaluf of Oceania. It is part of the reason why perhaps I have taken so long to get here. Indonesia also doesn't seem so different to Malaysia, so it perhaps didn't excite me too much either. But you can of course escape the crowds to see other parts of the country that are apparently beautiful and relaxing, so it seemed like a nice, logical stop for me on the way back home - the last country I will stop at on this epic journey. Japan had worn me out as have the previous two years and to be honest I ... read more

We took the Kura Kura bus ($5) to Ubud from Sanur, about an hour drive north into the interior of Bali. Ubud is know as the spiritual center of Bali and was made famous by the book/movie Eat, Pray, Love which somehow I missed throughout the years but will have to read now. We stayed 3 nights at Jiwa's Guest House ($22 w/bkfst), which was our favorite accommodation so far this trip. We were located centrally in the busy tourist area but Jiwa has managed to operate a luxurious and tranquil jungle oasis filled with ponds, altars, fountains and a pool and includes an incredible breakfast served to you on your balcony. Ubud goes down as one of my favorite towns and on the list for a must return one day. There are allegedly more vegan ... read more
