Late start to the day. Decided to walk along Sanur beach, which was similar to yesterday's walk along Nusa Dua but not as 5 star. Quite a few cafes and restaurants just around the corner from us and we picked out one for lunch as we strolled along. Towards the end of our walk after passing some nice resorts, we saw some fancy privately owned properties, which were huge.
We stopped at Bamboo Eatery and Bar and we both had a yummy crispy fried whole snapper. Food is so cheap here that you really never have to worry about prices.
After lunch we thought we'd better get over to the GWK Cultural Park , our planned activity for the day. I'd read that you only needed 2 hours, so the plan was to head over to famous temple at Uluwatu and watch the Fire dance, but it didn't work our that way. The traffic was pretty bad so we didn't get to the park until about 3.40pm.
On arrival we boarded a shuttle which took us to the main statue. We paid a little extra for the shuttle and were glad we
did. We had tickets pre-booked to go up the main statue, but we were asked to come back at 4.30pm, so we wandered around outside taking photos, and waited insidr having gelato. The statue is one of the biggest in the world. It represents Lord Vishnu riding Garuda and it is very impressive. Inside, you're taken on guided tour through the stories of how the statue came about and its construction. Inside you can see the skeleton of the statue. Reminded me of the inside of the Statue of Liberty but is 30 metres taller and a lot wider.
The tour took over 30 minutes so we missed hourly cultural dance. We had already decided that it was too late to get to Uluwatu but our guide told us to stay for the 6pm cultural dance which coincidentally was the same dance that is performed at the Uluwatu temple. By the time we got to the dance area there was already a big crowd but Daisy managed to get us a spot right in front of the stepped area because people were not initially sitting on the front step. The dance is called a Kecak dance and
this one also told the story of Garuda. We had watched a short animation of the story in the statue so it was easy to follow along and it was quite enjoyable with some great costumes and a bit of fire, but probably not as much as the Uluwatu one would have.
It was quite dark by the time it finished but we still wanted to see the other 2 major statues in the park so we stayed a bit longer. Saw another animated version of the Garuda story in the theatre and saw the other two statues that were originally going to be the feature statues. Theye were massive in size as well. By the time we made our way to the exit at 7.45pm, we were two of the last to leave. We made our way to the restaurant as we thought it was best to eat before heading home. It was a good decision, the food was very nice and surprisingly cheap plus they had live music start just as we were finishing. The band were very good and we ended up staying for about 4 songs. By this time there only about 4
customers left listening and the singer spoke to personally between songs because we sat down near them and applauded. She asked we had any requests and daisy asked for Olivia Newton-John and the only one they knew was :You’re the One That I Want” so they sang that. She tried to get Daisy to go up and sing it with her but there was no way that was going to happen.
Finally left arounf 9.20 and this time Gojek was cheaper so we used it and only cost us $12.70 which was a bargain as it took about an hour to get home.
