Today was relaxing day after 2 days of early starts. Had our lovely buffet breakfast at 8.45am and decided to visit Nusa Dua and do the Bail Underwater Walk. There are 2 companies here like Uber. Gojek is well established like Uber and Grab is a newer alternative. I did a couple of comparisons and Grab seems cheaper so ordered a Grab car to pick us up at our hotel. Another popular alternative is to hire a driver all day. Cost for that is about $55 for 10 hours, but we decided we didn't need that today. Cost to get to the activities centre was only $11.90. I was expecting an office for the Underwater Walk but instead we were directed to follow this guy who sat us down and asked us which of the activities we wanted to do. All types of things were on offer but we just stuck with our plan. Turns out price is negotiable. He initially wanted to charge us $190 with a photo package but I had read it should have been more like $150. He then offered $170, so we just settled on that.
It is a very dorky touristy thing to do
but it’s the closest we’ll ever get to scuba diving. You get onto a jetboat which swiftly got us to a pontoonnot far from the beach. You then are given some safety instructions by the diver how goes down with you. First you don some plastic shoes and then you descend on a ladder and they put a heavy helmet on your head where air is pumped in. It’s a bit like the old fashioned deep see diving method. As I descended I did start getting an ear-ache because of the change in pressure, but it settled down after about a minute as I waited for daisy to follow me. You then hold onto a railing and walk around a fairly small area with coral and lots of colourful fish who swarm around you as you hold a small plastic bag of fish food which you slowly release. The diver is always showing you the way as he takes photos and videos of you. You’re probably underwater for about 10-15 minutes. I would say it was a fun thing to do but I wouldn’t say it was good value for money as the photos weren’t that great either.
After speeding
back to the activities centre we had a shower and changed and decided to walk along the jogging track which follows the beach all the way down, passing all these 5 star resorts. After about a 60 minuy=te walk we were getting a bit tired and hungry and almost stopped at a small local café but I decided I wanted something a bit more up-market for hygiene purposes. It turned out to be a good decision. We came across a privately run restaurant called Manarai, within the Sofitel resort with reasonable western type prices. However the bonus was that the restaurant was based around a nice infinity pool and we got deck-chairs in a great position next to the pool. I even changed back into my swimmers as daisy was raving about how nice the ppol was, and I have to admit that it was. We ended up staying there about 2.5 hours having dessert and extra drinks as well as lunch. Spent about $75 but it was well worth it.
We left there around 3.30pm and continued our walk down the coast, finally reaching a road where we decided to order a Grab car to take us back
to Sanur. We decided to also buy tickets for one of those touristy shows called Devdan – Treasure of Archipelago which we came across as we were walking out of the resort area. Then orderd a Grab car back to Sanur. This time though it cost us $20.20, probably because it was a busier time.
Back in Sanur decided to try a cool Chinese restaurant across from out hotel call “Hey Ni Hao”. Nice meal and about half the price of Sydney prices for similar quality.
