Timerne slipper ... read more

Week one... Its been quite the week! So, after leaving Hong Kong (which has a huge airport. You have a subway station taking you from one terminal to the other), we arrived in Denpasar, Bali. Walk off the plane, and immediately you notice the slower pace here. The locals are so nice and seem pretty casual in their everyday life. Every morning and night (from my observations), they place offerings in front of every building or on alters. It is normally a little box made from banana leaves, with food and coins in it, with an incense stick burning. I accidentally stepped on their offering box.... oops! But, as you walk down the street, there are so many of these little offering things. Apparently its not disrespectful once they have said their prayer and set it ... read more

A 4.30am start to the day then down to the bus stop for the 5.21 airport bus. I must admit living so close to the bus route has saved us a lot of money over the years. We were through immigration by 6.30am and spent a little bit of time in duty free before boarding our flight, we paid extra for the seats over the wing because there is more leg room and fortunately the third seat was empty so we could spread out a bit. We had a special lesson on how to assist our fellow passengers out the emergency exit, LOL, I think I will be worrying more about my own escape. Virgin Pacific charge for literally everything including water and there is no in flight entertainment unless you pay fortunately the payment system ... read more

Wow! I Can’t believe how much I have done since I last wrote. I did eventually move out of the crazy hotel with all the “ladyboys” as the locals call them, the screaming to each other just got too much. There were another couple of placed that I was interested in but they had both suffered from the incredible downpours we had and were not taking guests. I eventually found a place called the Samui Mermaid at Big Buddha beach – with a name like that I should have gone there in the first place, and it was lovely. I had a clean and tidy little cottage with T.V. and a fridge for just a couple of dollars more than the last place. Much better value. Two swimming pools, lots of places within walking distance, which ... read more

Hello family, friends, colleagues and others who are interested in my travels. I thought I would make this entry to provide some background info. For the past 9 months I have lived in Bali. Much before this time though, I have had a dream of traveling and seeing the world. However, I did not want to simply travel to a place, see the usual tourist spots, then go back home. What I have wanted was a chance to be involved with the culture, come to understand how different parts of the world work and be able to really enjoy what the world has to offer. Very recently, I have just accepted an offer to work Middle East. Some people have asked how I felt about going to the Middle East. In reply, I believe that there ... read more

It's one helluva year as I start my new journey. OK, nobody really care about it, but everything goes right in this year as work gives me opportunities to see around. But the big (er little) Monster in the room is another new job which is a big game changer as it gets. We live only once, so let's live life to the fullest. Life, to coin a cliché, will never be the same. And it's daaaammmmnnn great thing. Now with 2010 still looming, stay tune for more adventures. Starting from Bali and ending who knows where...... read more

Bali batiks are famous world-over among those whose quilt, sew, or who are otherwise entranced by fabric. Visiting fabric stores was high on my list of things I wanted to do on this trip. Jalan Sulewesi is the street in Denpasar to find fabric, lots of it. For three solid blocks, just about every store on both sides of the street is a fabric store, with the odd motor scooter repair shop thrown in for spice. Like Singapore, and I’m sure many other tropical cities, Denpasar’s architecture makes good use of the five-foot way. Essentially this means the second story of a building extends five feet over the sidewalk below, providing much needed shade and protection from torrential rains. It also provides the shops on the ground floor an extension of their stores, and everyone takes ... read more

Where do I begin!!! This is what Wikipedia says. If you want more information go to the web site. www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyepi Observed from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection and as such, anything that might interfere with that purpose is restricted. The main restrictions are: no lighting fires (and lights must be kept low); no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and for some, no talking or eating at all. The effect of these prohibitions is that Bali’s usually bustling streets and roads are empty, there is little or no noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity are seen even inside homes. The only people to be seen outdoors are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are ... read more

Last year my birthday was in Darjeeling, India and this year Bali. Next year - who knows? Firstly a BIG thank you to all my wonderful friends and family who messaged me on my birthday. I don’t believe that birthdays are that important, I have always thought that it’s the person who gave birth that should be celebrated, but when I am away they somehow mean more. Cementing the bonds of friendship across distances I guess. And if you are one of those people who forgot, so what! I wonder how many times I have forgotten yours! The first thing I did was to set the birthday cards out that I received when we had Jackie and my birthday lunch before I left. (Photos in an earlier blog) I declined the fried fish and vegetables ... read more
