Just before I arrived in Bali, my family here had a visitor. Toby heard Tasha call, “Daddy, there’s a turtle in the house”. And sure enough a turtle had plodded into the house from the street. Now they don’t live out in the wilds, this is Denpasar, but there is a small rice field across the street so he may have come from there. For the last couple of weeks, poor ‘Timothy Turtle’ has been living in a small dry cement area with a few buckets of water poured over him from time to time and has been fed mango and broccoli. The usual diet for a turtle? So yesterday was release day and Toby, Tasha and I set out to find a nice spot by a river, where there would be no possibility of people ... read more

Since we didn’t really do very much in Bali and Moyo Island I will put it all into one post. This will cover from Feb 20th to Feb 28th 2010. The resort in Bali was lovely, we spent our first day on the beach. HB spent most of the time with her parents in their cabana, so I was with F. We didn’t do much at all, they all played in the water, but the currents were very strong so you couldn’t do much swimming. Mr G and F tried to go snorkelling but they kind of got washed away with the current down the beach. So they ended up having to walk back up to us. This really was the first time since Vietnam that we didn’t do anything. As the next day was going ... read more

I have managed to catch up with a lot of my wonderful friends while I have been in Australia these last few months, but for those who I haven’t managed to see and others not in Australia, I will fill you in on what has been happening in my slightly crazy life. I left India in September and was home in time for the birth of my fourth grandchild, Hudson. He is now a happy smiling 4 month old and Lauren is a truly amazing mother. Catching up with Lex (what a Dad you are), Sami and little Seth was wonderful too and so good that we could all have Christmas together. Then I got to be at Seth’s first birthday before heading off again the very next day. I seem to be doing that ... read more

Hello! Well, our SE Asia leg is now drawing to a close, all we've got left is a few days around here (well, 8) and then a quick trip to Singapore before heading to Oz. To catch up we've been rushing around like crazy the last few days! We went to see Borboudur and Prambaha temples on the 5th, which were both nice but not quite as impressive as Ankor Wat. It also meant an early start - setting off from the guest house at 5am to beat the crowds. Then we spent the last 2 days travelling from Jogja to here, stopping off to see Mt Bromo, an active volcano, on the way! That meant an even earlier start - 4am to catch the sunrise over Bromo and others in the range - which was ... read more

So Alicia and I have been in Bali for a week now, but it has felt like a month. We’ve officially fallen in love with the cuisine, the Balinese people, the beaches and the coral reefs. We are still adjusting to the blistering heat and humidity and the bugs. Alicia is sitting next to me scratching 8 bug bites on her feet and legs and dealing with a fried nose. I have some serious heat rash and what known as a Bali kiss on my leg (exhaust pipe burn from our moped.) Aside from those few annoyances, this island is amazing. Everyday we’ve been bombarded with new sights, smells, feelings and thoughts. Today we returned to Jimbaran Bay from our second road trip, a two hour ride north to the small town of Amed. One of ... read more

Hello everyone! Sorry its taken a while to let you all know we made it safely, but we did. The flight went smoothly and we are absolutely loving it! It hot hot hot, humid humid humid! We are staying with our friend max and his two roommates, Joaquim an awesome Canadian and George the Brit, we have an air mattress and our own little room to sleep in. The foods the best we've ever had and super cheap, a full meal is about a dollar fifty. We made one two day trip up into the hills of Bali to a town called Sideman. Lush jungles and beautiful rice patties and we stayed in our villa! Just wanted to send a quick hello we will be laying low for the next week or so and will be ... read more

AOA and Hello everyone WOW! We had a full day today! We woke up right before sunrise and got a nice start to our day by taking a short swim in our pool. We had a lovely breakfast and then got ready to meet our driver, Dewa. Our first stop was the Tanah Lot temple, such a beautiful place with so many different things to see. Walked through a local market on the way back to the car. Had lunch at an amazing restaurant overlooking a breathtaking view of rice paddies in the middle of nowhere - it was so nice! For awhile we were the only ones there and we had the whole place to ourselves. It was an incredible feeling sitting there and just letting it sink it that we are in BALI!!! After ... read more

We are in Bali!! This last 5 hour flight was a breeze compared to our 13 1/2 hour flight. We were able to sleep some more and give our bodies some more rest. After a pretty long line to get through customs, we were greeted by our driver from our resort holding a sign with our names on it. The drive from the airport to the hotel was a short distance but took a little bit of time due to all the traffic!! There are scooters everywhere and people, the road signs and markings don't really mean much to the drivers! Honking the horn seems like second nature to all the drivers here. After about 20 min we arrived at the Jamahal Resort in Jimbaran Bay. Wow! This place is awesome. It is hidden off of ... read more

June 27th Five months to the day after first crossing into the Northern Hemisphere on our trip, we were going to cross the equator again, back to the south. We got a bemo (tiny mini-bus) to the airport, 5km away. It was so tiny we struggled to get our backpacks in. After checking in for our multi-million Rupiah flight we had a long wait in the airport lounge. We saw one other white guy! Amazing! We finally left Tarakan, flew over the equator, had a brief stop-over in Balikpapan, then left Borneo for good. As we arrived in Surabaya, the capital of east Java, we had to set our watch, phone, laptop, video- and three digital cameras back one hour. One might say we have too many time-pieces... Once off the plane we checked with all ... read more
