We just got off the plane at 9.30am India time (4am UK time) having not had any sleep. We went straight to the hotel from where we were almost immediately ushered off to a "friendly" travel agent. I'm sure this is a regular trick that they use to take advantage of tired and disoriented western tourists. Before we knew what had happened we had signed up for a 7 day tour with a driver and hotels. Not really having much concept of how much things cost it seemed reasonable. However now consulting the guide book I think we have paid considerably over the odds. Oh well you live and learn, but I think that saying may be a little over used by the time we leave India! So anyway the plan for the next week is ... read more

Summary: A bit boring I'm afraid I go on mostly about language, a posh english guy and how i'm accumulating so many phone numbers i can probably open a local telephone directory soon. This place is 'off the beaten track' and recieves little to no foreign tourists - it does however get a steady flow of Indian tourists. Guwahati has a few mildly interesting sites but nothing amazing as yet - I haven't been to the Kamakyah sacraficial temple yet. It's importance comes as a central hub to the surrounding area and Indians arrange tours to National parks etc from here. It is however good to get a feel of a completely different type of India. People here are different and coupled with the lack of westerners this means you get a very different impression of ... read more

Unfortunately it was too late to reserve a seat on today's Toy Train up to Darjeeling, so I was told the best thing to do would be to buy a second class ticket and then attempt to upgrade on the train. Since I didn't fancy the prospect of potentially having to spend the entire 6-9 hour journey jammed into second class, I decided to give it a miss and get a shared Jeep instead. The shared Jeeps wait around until they are completely full, which meant a 30 minute wait until we departed. This required cramming into the seats 4 foreigners, 2 burly Nepalis, 2 chubby Indians, and 2 people of the size that the Jeep was originally designed for. One of the Nepali guys, on seeing my discomfort in the seat I'd been allocated, generously ... read more

unedited!.....no spelll check!......no grammmer review! The Hotel Alka is tres propre and has a fine vegetarian kitchen! The cows and buffalo parade past the front door, the monkeys swing from the trees above the dining terrace, the dogs howl wether there is a moon or not and the goats bounce up and down the river steps. But no viande to be foound on the diner plate! Lots of buffalo cheese, curd and milk ... looks like one percent .... legumes, pan and veggies ... and beer! The arrival at six o'clock in the morning went without a hitch, (a hotel employee was there to meet us ...that way we avoided all the hasslers and the hotel does not give commissions) ........ until we got into the autorickshaw. For 45 minutes we bounced along a flat country ... read more

This bloody travel blog thing doesn't even have a category (again) for the whole district I've just been to so I've put it in the title (again). I arrived in Shillong on the afternoon of the 18th having randomly deciding to leave a day early just because I happened to walk past the place where the Sumo's (looks like a landrover or something except cheap and nasty with no 4WD) leave from. Pretty much as soon as I stepped out of the car in the usual initial disorientated 'which way is up' fashion a western girl (mid 20's) befriended me and walked me to my hotel. She was an anthropologist studying the tribal culture in Meghalaya over the next year and it would have been really interesting to find out what she knew but I never ... read more

In Mumbai now and having a really bad time!! We got picked up from the airport yesterday and taken to our hotel. It is in the most horrible area - definitely down town Mumbai and the hotel is horrible (like really disgusting with windows that don't shut properly, broken lights etc). And the hotel was full of local people, there were no tourists to be seen anywhere. We felt completely distraught and went straight to the Internet cafe to find the numbers of the airline (to try and bring our flight forward), the number for STA (who we'd booked the hotel through - we've already started on the complaint letter and taken pictures of the hotel!) and the number for the hotel where staying in in Bankok (to see if we can stay a day earlier). ... read more

Hi All, Thank you once again for all of your fabulous messages and notes. I'm sorry for being out of touch. We've been out in small towns and villages and the internet connections are either non-existant or unreliable...or are so slow I can't even believe it (a British guy and I were lamenting a connection that hardly worked at "an internet cafe" at the hill station the other night). To those of you who have sent messages, I'm sorry you haven't seen them posted right away, I have to accept them to have them show up on the website, and I haven't had a fast enough connection that I can do that. So, tonight I have an opportunity to get online at a decent connection, but I have an audience (my host father is standing here ... read more

A short blog today, with pictures only from the party at Sanjay's brother's (Ravi's) house across the street on Sunday night. With help from Ajay's mother (who wears a sari everyday), I wore my new pink-and-orange silk sari. It was fun to wear, but I had to be very careful. Luckily, I had only to walk across the street to get to the party! The party was for Ravi and Meenu's wedding anniversary, and it was lovely. Meenu is very creative -- she's a clothes designer -- and she had the terrace decorated with draperies, lights, fountains, etc. I met some really nice people, all either close friends or relatives of Ravi and Meenu, and the catered food was great -- especially the dessert table! Indians love sweets, and so do I ... it's a bad ... read more

After a great day around Mumbai - Crawford Market delights, the immense, opulent Taj Hotel we left the next day on the early morning train. It's not a pretty sight from the train - the poverty, the dirt and decaying buildings. We have great hopes for India with its population and economy expanding so rapidly...I'm sure it can't come too soon for many of the people. The Konkan Railroad train to Goa is only some 20 years old. It was built partly as a military defensive manoeuvre as there was no swift rail link along this rugged coast. There are dozens of tunnels - some longer than two kilometres. The trip is a treat as the train winds through mountains, beside lakes, rice paddies, forests and high, dry fields. The sun was setting as we arrived ... read more

We managed to move our flight to tomorrow morning! So we are spending the day in uptown Mumbai, somewhere called Colaba, gonna have dinner and then get a taxi back. Our flight is at 5am so we will aim to get to the airport about 12. I can't wait- Le Meridan Bangkok- here I come! ... read more
