I'll start with a story on the first day in Rishikesh we were walking along the Ganga. and i notice a small booth selling cigarettes, and i sew the seller selling those Indian cigarettes we used to smoke at 15, so i wanted some. so i go to the guy asking for them but the guy keep giving Marlboro and such. I guess he never sew a crazy western like me. and then like always in such cases there a small crowd gathering, it was two passing guy that came to "have a look", anyway they kinda got what i wanted and them, they guy gives me one of those Indian cigarette (which are basically a rolled leaf) but when i have offered him a Rupee he refused. We just stumbled back into town after 12 hours on the lowest class bus in India. The Himalayas are young and sedimentary so landslides are frequent and road work is never finished. Our bus bounced over huge fallen rocks, inches from the 1000 foot crumbling edge with no guard rail. Overflowing with people we screech brakes around thin corners with full size busses squeezing between us and the mountain. On the other side a mile down is a river. Nothing between us and death. Most women are puking, Melissa falls asleep to the bouncing, and I stay sane by imaging myself jumping through the tiny window and grabbing a small tree when we inevitably drive off the cliff. My nerves are tight and my stomach turns the whole way. The bus slows only for fresh landslides ... read more

Baba invited us to dinner at his house today. We were a bit worried about what to bring for a gift so edventually just decided to bring cakes. To get there we both had to hop on the back of his motorcycle and drive the Indian way, ie. like mad and with no helmets! Got to his house and it is so sweet, his wife and son were there also and his son is absoultely adorable. His name is Yogi and he is eight months old. We could have played with him for hours. We arrived at about 730pm but it was a bit difficult from 8pm to 9pm as Baba does not speak, he keeps silent for universal peace. They were showing us their wedding album, which was in this really ornate box - they ... read more

Well we finally made it to Rishikesh in the north and it is fabulous. We have a balcony overlooking the Ganga and can even see our Ashram too. It's mad to think that we are actually at the Himalayas. The guy who met us at the railway station, Baba, turned out to be so nice and helpful, he collected us the first morning to bring us to the ashram, then brought Irene on a mad motorcycle ride to get a cricket bat for her brother. We got a message to return his call the first morning, so I phoned the mobile number but it turned out to be Mr. Siu - the man who had helped us find our correct carraige after we had literally just thrown ourselves on the train. He was just phoning to ... read more

Nameste Well after many days of agony I finally made it to a computer to update our past days of travel. Our arrival and stay in Delhi was not as bad as I thought. I was prepared to enter into the most polluted city in the world with mobs of people haggling us for money and our business. Though there was quite a bit I did not find it nearly as polluted or annoying as Bangkok, Thailand. I did not feel the cultural shock I was expecting. None the less we left there shortly and are now in Rishikesh. Upon our arrival at 6 am in the morning, and with our first steps of the bus, we were encountered with a mob of rickshaw drivers yelling and grabbing at our bags, trying to get our business. ... read more

So we leave Jasalmer at 10am on Friday, after driving for the whole day and having a bit of a long detour through Bikaner - due to Magnus, the Norgewian dude wanting to get food and Bengali being a thick fucker - we end up having to stay in this FILTHY roadside motel place....as Bengali won't drive at night, he even refuses to use his full lights - they have to be on dim the whole time. Bearing in mind that this is the country where they drive like maniacs and the rest of the population refuse to dim their lights even with oncoming traffic it's not a great idea! But the motel place was gross, we literally got in, slept and set off at like 8 the next morn tp avoid being there any ... read more

I'll try to make this as uplifting and positive as possible but right now Im getting over a serious war with the toilet. After many attacks the bowl resisted and concessions are finally being made. Melissa has just taken on the fever part of the flu, aka travelers bug, and is now in bed sleeping it off. We got it from a vendor who sells mint and lime sodas that he prepares on the street, there supposed to heal the soul or something. I guess I needed a lot of soul cleansing. Luckily we bought some generic cipro while in Thailand and it has settled the bacteria party in our stomachs. So now we are taking it very easy on the foothills of the himalayas in Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world. The town is ... read more

A little behind on my travel blogs, but do not worry, now that I'm traveling by myself I'll have plenty of time to catch up! Going back three weeks ago . . . We were still in India, still in Rishikesh, seems like a lifetime ago on a different planet. Rachel, Jordana and I had planned to go on a four day Himalayan trek to climb a mountain peak which reached a little more than 4,000 meters (the highest mountain peak in Lake Tahoe is at Heavenly, and is ONLY 3068 meters tall!). We had our guide Mokesh to lead us through beautiful mountains, remote villages and deep valleys. Despite cold weather, hail and rain, we reached our peak on the fourth day! It was exhilarating. Here are my pictures from that event, enjoy! Next Destination: ... read more

After leaving Pushkar we made our way to the capital Delhi where we met our Indian friends. Exciting to be in the City and to stay with a lovely family in a real house again.(THE kUTTY'S) The highlight of this visit was our trip to Rishikesh. This is another Holy town set in the pituresque mountains and the start of the Himalayers. This was the town the Beatles spent 6 weeks chilling out, meditating and waiting for inspiraration from a higher source. Most recently Brad Pitt came alone and actually stayed 5 minutes from our camp. He also took part in exactly the same white water rafting tour we made. We began our day at 6.30 am and initially went jungle trekking, here we saw a beautiful waterfall and Nadja wearing some very odd looking trousers. ... read more

So I'm in Rishikesh and have come to work on a small Electricity project at the Swami Rama Sadhaka Gram. It is a Yoga School and not denominated with any one religion. I need to get that out because whenever someone thinks of Rishikesh, the first image that comes into your mind is Hinduism. While Rishikesh is a Hindu pilgrimage centre this ashram is a school of Yoga and doesn't limit itself to any one religion. It carries books on all faiths in its library and bookstore and its teachings are universal. Its hard to walk on the streets of Calgary and miss the numerous Yoga schools. Its become a big business lately. This ashram is pretty new (only 2 years old) and I've come here to help out. The best way to show you this ... read more
