I parted ways with my UK friends and drivers in Haridwar. Haridwar is about a 6 hour drive north of Delhi. I picked Haridwar for a couple of reasons. First, it's pretty far north and maybe I'll escape some of the blistering heat. Plus, it's strategically placed to several interesting locations. First, Haridwar is a holy hindu city where the Hindu God Shiva reportedly left a footprint and dropped some holy nectar. It's also where the Ganges (or Ganga, as they say in India) first runs from Himalayan melt off up north. Haridwar has a famous ghat (or holy steps) along the Ganga where thousands of pilgrams travel to bathe and wash their sins away. Its a uniquely Indian experience to behold. Especially when a march of hundreds of Hare Krishna's arrive on the scene chanting ... read more

Andrea and Padeep were invited to a wedding just out of Shimla and asked Monika and I if we would like to go. Naturally we said yes and hence out trip to the mountains began. The trip stared with a train journey from Haridwar to Chandigarh on a sleeper train. It wasn’t overnight but was great having bunks to relax on. For some crazy reason, I decided to climb up to the top of a three tiered bunk. Nice and peaceful though. We ate lots as people come around with food all the time and it’s good and inexpensive. Isha (16 months) was really good and we played peek-a-boo over the edge of the bunk. Hence the strange angle of then photo! Once in Chandigarh we raced by a very packed auto rickshaw to the bus ... read more

The next day we said goodbye to our hosts and headed down a path this time and the scenery was even more beautiful. People would happily pay to go on hikes through this part of the country. I am not into difficult walks but this was something else. Another maniacal 4 hour drive then we are back in Shimla at a more central and better hotel - or so we thought. Shimla really is beautiful. Lots of little narrow markets, large wide walk ways with views of the Himalayas. Good food - even booze! The weather was cool but bright, we loved it. The hotel certainly wasn’t 4 star, but was reasonably priced and boasted ‘hot and cold running water”. Some places only have cold. Unfortunately we only had water - hot or cold, for half ... read more
The views are stunning everywhere.
Unlike Darjeeling, Shimla has wonderful wide open areas.
I think this one could be going cheap.

Monika and I went with a few of the older ashram girls to see some of the temples around Haridwar. Two were reached by cable care but they call rope way. I thought we were going to be pulling ourselves up by a rope! The girls walked up but Monika and I were very grateful for the cable cars. The temples were packed. I was quite disappointed and found them very unspiritual. We all queued up, when it was our turn it was, donation here, dot on the forehead, cotton tied around the wrist, a wack on the back while a few words were chanted then “next”! It was really noisy, some of the priests were on their mobiles the whole time, hawkers were selling tacky souvenirs, everyone was pushing and shoving to get in front ... read more

Mrs. Nandi, the principal really wants to change the way learning occurs in the school and we are working hard together to achieve this. I have been working at the bottom, nursery class, as we figured this was the best place to start. There are 40 three and four year olds in this class and when I first went in, they were sitting in rows, with their bags on their desks doing nothing. Some were even asleep. The teacher was calling them out one by one to write the letters of the alphabet in their copy books. BORING! Things have changed as you can see from the photographs. I have made the desks into groups, bags are kept outside the classroom and there is a different activity on each group of tables, which I have introduced ... read more

I went to the wedding of a staff member at school about 10 days ago (sorry, got behind on my blog) with a few people from the ashram. The usual Indian type where everybody mills around, eats from a huge choice of food being freshly cooked and drinks lots of Fanta and Sprite. No, no alcohol! It was fun and a great excuse to get dressed up, which is something I never have a need to do at the ashram. Luckily there was an amazing pure silk embroidered salwar kameez which fitted perfectly in the trunk. I’ve told you about ‘the trunk’ before. We did get to see the groom, but the photo didn’t come out too well so I haven’t included it. We left at about 11.30.p.m, really late for us early risers and the ... read more

Our train, the Rajdhani Express reached the Delhi Nizzamuddin Station today.... The journey from Bangalore by AC 3 tier was extremely comfortable and the food was good - all thanks to our railway minister Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav. According to my dad's plans we were to take a car from Delhi and drive to the various places in Uttranchal. The car my dad drove was the Maruti Swift DZire.. an excellent car that ran on diesel and gave us literally no trouble at all... The journey to Haridwar was a bit off a pain because of the traffic in Uttar Pradesh. The traffic, i must say i horrible!! Truly Horrible!! With bullock carts and ordinary vehicles travelling on the same road and honking as much as they want.. In the north, the trend is that unless ... read more

A Typical Day at the Ashram. A huge, very loud bell is rung at 5.a.m. to say that chai (tea) is ready in the kitchen. Much as I love chai, I really don’t love it that much, so I roll over and go back to sleep. The next bell is at 6 and that’s for the children’s fitness, yoga, prayers etcetera. Once again, I try to perfect the art of rolling over and going back to sleep, but not for too long. About 6.30 I take my bucket and walk to the other side of the building to where the geezers are and get some hot water, although lately I haven’t bothered as it’s good to have a cold one. Then back to my room for a quick bucket shower. If I have washing to do, ... read more
