I parted ways with my UK friends and drivers in Haridwar. Haridwar is about a 6 hour drive north of Delhi. I picked Haridwar for a couple of reasons. First, it's pretty far north and maybe I'll escape some of the blistering heat. Plus, it's strategically placed to several interesting locations. First, Haridwar is a holy hindu city where the Hindu God Shiva reportedly left a footprint and dropped some holy nectar. It's also where the Ganges (or Ganga, as they say in India) first runs from Himalayan melt off up north. Haridwar has a famous ghat (or holy steps) along the Ganga where thousands of pilgrams travel to bathe and wash their sins away. Its a uniquely Indian experience to behold. The next day we said goodbye to our hosts and headed down a path this time and the scenery was even more beautiful. People would happily pay to go on hikes through this part of the country. I am not into difficult walks but this was something else. Another maniacal 4 hour drive then we are back in Shimla at a more central and better hotel - or so we thought. Shimla really is beautiful. Lots of little narrow markets, large wide walk ways with views of the Himalayas. Good food - even booze! The weather was cool but bright, we loved it. The hotel certainly wasn’t 4 star, but was reasonably priced and boasted ‘hot and cold running water”. Some places only have cold. Mrs. Nandi, the principal really wants to change the way learning occurs in the school and we are working hard together to achieve this. I have been working at the bottom, nursery class, as we figured this was the best place to start. There are 40 three and four year olds in this class and when I first went in, they were sitting in rows, with their bags on their desks doing nothing. Some were even asleep. The teacher was calling them out one by one to write the letters of the alphabet in their copy books. BORING! Things have changed as you can see from the photographs. Our train, the Rajdhani Express reached the Delhi Nizzamuddin Station today.... The journey from Bangalore by AC 3 tier was extremely comfortable and the food was good - all thanks to our railway minister Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav. According to my dad's plans we were to take a car from Delhi and drive to the various places in Uttranchal. The car my dad drove was the Maruti Swift DZire.. an excellent car that ran on diesel and gave us literally no trouble at all... The journey to Haridwar was a bit off a pain because of the traffic in Uttar Pradesh. The traffic, i must say i horrible!! Truly Horrible!!
