Yesterday we got a rickshaw into Haridwar which is about an hours drive. It really is quite hard because whenever you want to spend money i.e go in a rickshaw, they try and charge you astronomical amounts. So after much fighting and about 50 drivers around you you CAN actually get a very cheap rate. You have just got to have patience, pretend you are going to walk there and fight (not physically!) It is quite amusing actually. So we got to Haridwar and visited the temple on top of the hill from a cable car, that was good. However you have to pay a donation for your shoes, to go into the temple and then there are about 20 shrines in the temple all full of money. Apparently it is one of the holiest citys ... read more

We travelled to Haridwar by train (about a 7 hour trip) for only 6 quid. Bargain!! We thought, and then we were also served a full breakfast, tea (not 6 hours old but a flask of hot water and tea bag etc) and lunch!. British rail companies have a lot to learn! After a couple a days in the centre of town we moved a couple of km out to the Moyal Ashram, for 3 days. Nothing as heavy or religious as it might sound, but very calming after Delhi. It was just like a guest house but with a temple and yoga classes. It was a great place to relax and recover from my cold and take yoga twice a day in a class of 3!. There’s a lot to be said for the breathing ... read more

I have carried my DC, Fisheye and DV for the trip and all the way I don't see any problem shooting people...finally got in the trouble today!! you know in some parts of India people are highly restricted in their Hindu belief (maybe you have seen those half-elephant, half human in blue or a greenish status with 3 eyes and 8 arms???)...woman can not take any picture...I did not aware of that and when I arrived the Ganges today I just kept shooting shooting people taking bath (no nudity as you wish..! women were all fully dressed!!)...and suddenly a woman screamed! Holi I knew I was in trouble so I ran...an old man just caught me and we almost got a fight. Of course, finally I was safe otherwise I wouldn't get this blog done....haha. what ... read more

Today was an inter-city travel day that mercifully only took 1.25 hours, by bus to Haridwar. The bus itself was virtually empty so I was able to sprawl out on a seat. Such moments are to be treasured. Haridwar is a holy site for Hindus, as it represents the point where the Ganges comes out of the hills and begins its journey eastward across the plains. I'd been unable to get hold of any hotels yesterday, so this marked the first town I've arrived in with no accommodation pre-booked, but I soon found one of the hotels that had a good write-up in the RG (Hotel Kailash), and they had a spare room. As they were still cleaning it, I decided to grab some brunch to kill an hour or so until it was ready. I ... read more
