Happy 54th Birthday Baba! In the morning today, I went to Ram Rai Darbar …a temple and mausoleum. Ram Rai was the son of the 7th Sikh guru Har Rai but was excommunicated from him. Ram formed his own order and there are still schools and hospitals run by this organization. His four, yes four! wives tombs are here. It is a set of beautiful buildings and gardens, and of course the Rai part was of great significance for me. Later, I went back to Baba’s ashram and the birthday celebrations had begun. The day before everyone was getting ready decorating the outside of the ashram with beautiful coloured lights and singers were practicing their bhajans. The meditation/gathering room was also being decorated and set up for the occasion. Caterers were arriving with lots, and lots ... read more

Well, I made it to Dehradun after a 10 hour bus ride from Amritsar on a government bus…always an experience. Again, I had to endure immense amounts of staring and curiosty which is unnerving. I just ignored it as best I could instead of doing what my alterego wants to do sometimes and that is scream, “What are you looking at? Do you want to know something? Do you know it’s rude to stare? Do I have snot hanging from my nose? If you have a question, then ask it, don’t just stare!! Goddamn it!” I have once or twice stared a few people down just so they “got a piece of their own medicine,” but this is not the most harmonious approach, nor the type of person I want to be. Plus, I think this ... read more

While Delhi experienced its hottest days, we - my companion and me - decided to go on a short weekend to a place called Dakpathar, which is off the main tourist route but could be a nice getaway if you are looking for some quiet moments. You can also avoid the “tourists” heading toward “hill stations” to cool their tempers. My first encounter with such “tourists” took place at a mid-way eating joint. It was so crowded that we gave up any idea we had of washing down mix veg pakoras with garam chai and had to make do with a fruit cake and a mango drink. Certainly, not a very good combo for breakfast. But we were helpless. As we approached Shivalik hills, I could feel the excitement I usually get when I enter the ... read more

Merry Christmas from Joybells! Christmas came early for the children of Joybells. They sang carols, visited with santa, and entertained us with a fantastic Christmas program. For the newest children at Joybells, this was their first Christmas ever. Seeing the sheer joy on 60 children's faces was beautiful. From the children of Joybells, we send that joy to you as you celebrate the Christmas season and New Year. Please remember Ellie, Kate, Simon, Dave and Ryan in your prayers. These teachers are far from home this holiday season and I am sure are missing home. ... read more

This blog is dedicated to those that travel from near and far to be a part of Joybell's School. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains, in a township called Dehradun, you'll find home to 53 children at Joybell's School and Orphanage. The children only knew of sadness and hardship before finding their new home. Their faces black from sun damage and dirt are unrecognizable now and everyday their minds and smiles grow brighter. Visit Joybell's online at Joybell's School and Orphanage. The Latest: Open Wide. Recently visited by Dentists from Europe, all the children received dental examinations and treatments. Now that a permanent room has been equipped with dental care instruments, the children will be ready for their yearly check-ups! Where's the water? Drilling for a water source will b... read more

Pictures are going to have to wait for another time, since I don't have my camera's memory card or the time to wait for pictures to upload over dialup. I'm in Dehra Dun now, after taking a jeep from Uttarkashi this morning. The course had a few surprises but was more or less how I vaguely expected. All in all it was well worth the time and effort and a few of the other attendees are with me in Dehra Dun, and after a sumptuous meal that ran to an outrageous $8 (I'll save my bitching about the food during the course for another day) we're doing our best to find out if it's possible to see the movie 300 here. I'm afraid it'll be dubbed in Hindi, though that won't stop me if it's showing ... read more
