as i just re-read my latest email/xanga entry i realized how incredibly spastic they are. it's hard to capture the essence of these places when there's just so much to say. i find that my thoughts are going about 50 mph too fast for my fingers and all of the thoughts that i'm having are not being aptly portrayed in my posts. my fingers cannot keep up with the multitude of feelings streaming through my mind. that last email simply did not do justice to the past 48 hours. but, honestly, i'm too hungry to bother to re-post anything. time for some food. -molly ... read more

Upon arrival in Delhi I felt reasonably well equipped to deal with the inevitable scams and touts that are par for the course in this part of the world, having absorbed lots of advice from fellow travelers that had already visited India. Straight away the taxi journey from the airport into the city provided me with an introduction to this aspect of travel in India, as even though I'd pre-paid for my taxi from an official booth the driver and his mate in the front seat still refused to take me straight to my destination and wanted me to check out his "friends" travel agent that could easily sort out my onwards tickets!! (sound familiar anyone whose visited India?). Anyway after 15 minutes of discussion and me trying to explain that I hadn't just got off ... read more

After a short bus ride I arrived in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. Actually entering the Taj Mahal complex was pretty expensive (750 Rupes == 18 dollars) but I was eager to see it; so I decided to head down there anyways and see if I could just view it from the streets or something (I was planning on going in the next morning). I arrived at the main gate to the Taj, and start to poke around a little. I noticed a path that leaded into the woods and around the outside wall....so of course I head down there...ended up sneaking through a fence, past some sort of gaurd (who was cleaning his motorcycle) and into an area that seemed to hold plants and flowers that where used to decorate the Taj Mahal grounds. ... read more

So this blog will be a little less about India, and a little more about traveling in general....I'm going to go off on a slight tangent..Since I haven’t got any comments from you fools, maybe I'm not being interesting enough...challenge excepted! Ok so last you heard I was just finished with my trek in Nepal to the Annapurna Base Camp. 2 days after that I took (multiple) hellish buses all the way to Varanasi, India. The bus ride was 23 HOURS long...and this was not a comfortable bus. Normally there are a few different types of buses. The best of the bunch are the VIP Tourist buses, and these are the ones that (in most countries) normally run the really long routes...23 hours for example) and they are kind of similar to a nicish bus at ... read more

We were in the train station of Katni at 9:30 a.m., enough time to buy tickets. We split up to different queues, a strategy that has already proved quite helpful in India. Suddenly, a policeman led Stephan to a different ticket counter in a car outside the building, a man was sitting there with a computer on his lap. This was supposed to be the express counter! We did not really trust this arrangement, so Klaudia stayed queued, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Soon, the policeman turned up again, violently dragging the Indians in front of Klaudia from their places in order to make Klaudia advance faster. He treated these people in an incredibly unfriendly way, shouting at them something Klaudia could not understand, but she could imagine the meaning of his words. These ... read more

Fatehpur Sikri is only 37 km away from Agra, so we thought the bus ride would be no problem. Far from that! We had to take a minibus, there was no other means of public transport available. Our luggage was safely stored in a separate compartment and when we got in and took our seats, we knew why: there was absolutely no space inside. Mind you, the seats were so small that even Klaudia’s knees touched the back of the front seat, and she really isn’t very tall. Stephan called it a shrunk bus and was wondering whether we were not riding on a recycled school bus. This trip was the most uncomfortable one so far, the streets inside Agra were so full of potholes that you could no longer see any tar and are a ... read more

Our 12 hour journey to Varanasi turned into a miserable 15 hour journey thanks to the punctuality of the Indian rail. Plus, we had the pleasure of sharing our cubicle with a wheezing bull (well, he definately sounded and looked like a wheezing bull). Suffice to say we woke up that day rather grumpy. To make matters worse, Indian Airlines had contacted us and told us that the flight we had booked from Varanasi into Nepal for the 14th had been rerouted via Delhi, so we now had to fly to Delhi on the 13th (today) at 3pm. Thus, instead of having 1.5 days in Varanasi, we now had about 6 hours. However, since the train decided to be 3 hours late, we now only had 3 hours. Plus we had to go collect our new ... read more

Yay, finally we get to see a world famous site in India - apart from its world famous stinkiness and dirtiness. However before that, a quick update on food. We have been eating, and eating a lot. So much so that I have developed noticable new pockets of fat on my stomach. Melenie however has managed to remain immaculately skinny thanks to her regularly bouts of food poisoning and vomiting. I am hoping to get some food poisoning soon as this may be the only way of trimming down before the end of this holiday. Okay, so back to Agra. We started the day with breakfast. The first in India because up till now we haven't really had time for breakfast. But this breakfast was free, and it was buffet!! The day started badly. We hopped ... read more

Left Orcha. Took rickshaw to Jhansi, and from thence to Agra. However the train got as far a Gwalior then ground to a halt. For hours. I ran out of water early on and hadn't brought any more with me. I started to fantisise about water. I tried really hard not to think of fountains, streams and taps gushing with cold, clear, plentiful water or of being in a cold shower with water streaming over my face, into my mouth. I watched our fellow travellers with their bottles of water. I tried not to stare as they poured water down their throats. I fought the urge to ask for some, thinking of infection. It was like a bad song that goes round and round in your head. Cyclical thoughts of water. We had two friendly travelling ... read more

Descend on Agra. The Taj Mahal awaits us. Simply amazing. Six AM meeting time to catch a train to Agra. I was really excited to finally get started with our tour since it seems like ages that I've been in New Delhi (only a couple of days!) It's really nice to have a tour leader to do all of the thinking for us. Basically we just follow him and he has all the transportation and accommodations arranged for us. Sure makes one a lazy traveler. But hey, sometimes you just need that! :) We had a pretty busy day once we arrived in Agra. We grabbed a quick bite to eat then headed off to see Baby Taj, Agra Fort and then a carpet factory before taking a break. The person leading the tour at the ... read more
