This morning I couldn't find the special geezer I normally ask to turn on my special geyser, so I had to make do with someone else. I don't know whether he didn't know what to do, or whether there was some problem with the geyser, but what I do know is that after half an hour of faffing about, with the power cut deadline looming, he had to admit defeat and ask me to take my shower in another room nearby. I was forced to hand in some clothes for laundering, and am hoping that the purifying powers of the Ganges will be stronger than the effect of the chemicals and numerous types of debris floating around in there. My plans to have a pleasant morning on the terrace watching the river go by were scuppered ... read more

Yesterday we got the train to Agra. I was a bit sceptical of getting the train but was pleasantly surprised. For a start it left on time! It was pretty spacious and we even got a free meal and drinks! When we arrived at Agra we got picked up and taken to the hotel where again we were really pleasantly surprised - the hotel was lovely (especially when all we had to compare it to was that hotel in New Delhi!) We had a nap and then headed off the the Taj Mahal with our driver and tour guide. The Taj Mahal was amazing, its quite hard to describe, I guess you have to be there! Its made completely of marble with precious stones that sparkle in the sunlight. We stayed there and watched the sun ... read more

Yes we were really there- can you believe! The journey there was relatively painless and I almost cried with relief as we checked into our new hotel. I was soo plush compared to the previous one- I just wanted to stay there and not come out! We got there at 9.30 and rested until lunchtime then we went to see the great Taj! We had a guide with us, which alsthough we didn't see the use of at first, he was really helpful anbd gave us a lot of info that the books don't contain. We stayed there until the sunset it was magical! The next day however (sunday) was not as good- we didn't really want to visit any more sites, we were toured out and just ended up getting in and out of our ... read more

Coucou mes Loulou... Juste quelques photos... ... read more

One of the other facilities offered by the hotel is free boat trips on the Ganges at dawn and dusk. The dawn voyage was at 6AM, so I had asked the staff to turn on my special geyser at 5:30AM so I could grab a shower before heading out. The request seemed to have been forgotten but washing in cold water isn't quite so bad when the air temperature is high enough that you can't see your breath. A few other guests had also signed up, so we all shuffled off into the early morning dimness behind the boatman. There was a slight chill to the air but nothing uncomfortable (hardly surprising - when I checked on the web yesterday, Varanasi was warmer than Chennai in the south). The river was unbelievably busy at this time ... read more

After running the hot water for about 10 minutes this morning, and feeling no hot water come out, a certain feeling of resignation came over me as I knew I would have to plod down 6 flights of stairs in order to find out what new twist was preventing me from having a hot shower. I also noticed that, as the floor filled up with cold water, there were rather too many hairs of unknown provenance drifting around. This, together with the mud stains and unflushed turd, were making me suspect that just maybe no-one had cleaned my bathroom before I took the room. After having a brief uncomfortable wash in the sink, I descended to the reception to find out what was going on. The absence of hot water was easily explained - there is ... read more

I think today was my earliest rise of the trip so far - 3:20AM. I managed to keep things reasonably warm in the bathroom by pointing the heater at the open doorway. The taxi to Umaria was actually a very comfortable Chevy SUV, so the fact I paid probably 50% more than I should have was less of a sting. I was the only resident of my 2AC cabin for the journey to Varanasi, and slept for about half of what turned out to be a 13 hour ride. I ordered a veg lunch but it never arrived (nor did I see again the guy who'd taken my order), so my sole sustenance for the trip was my last Fruit Tella. There are a variety of scams perpetrated in Varanasi that travellers need to be aware ... read more

Today is the 11th of January 2006. Our driver had arrived with a Toyota Qualis for our drive to Agra.. The road was good and had a wide median landscaped with flowering plants like the Nerium Oleander, which is a commonly grown plant here. It was a comfortable ride and by the time we reached Sikandra it was 2 30 pm. Sikandra, being the place where Emperor Akbar was laid to rest. The monument was beautiful and impressive - left one thinking about the legacy of the great secular statesman. He was indeed a man born before his times, a true leader and a clever strategist, its no wonder the kingdom flourished during his reign, when the subjects were happy with their king. From Sikandra, we moved on towards Agra and the Taj. In order to ... read more

UPDATED WITH PICTURES There are no pictures for this entry, yet. We have been taking quite a few pictures but we need to transfer my pictures to CD so we can then upload onto the site. Since most of you are waiting for pics,we'll try to get them up as soon as possible. The flights were on Cathay Pacific from San Fran to Delhi via Hong Kong. Other than some turbulence, great service, movie selection and veg indian food. We arrived in Delhi on Jan 3. Day 1 - Took a taxi to our hotel (not much of hotel) in Paharganj. Very crowded, muddy and smelly street (I am still having smell flashbacks); if you think New York City is stressful, this is a whole other level - hard to deal with just off the plane. ... read more

Yay...I'm back and everything seems to be working. I can't wait to show you the pictures of the street scenes...unreal. Nick, I don't think I'll ever complain about your driving again! Okay...on to New Year's Eve. We are staying with a wonderful family for our three nights here in Agra. They are so generous and quite wealthy. They have a handful of servants, we have a driver and we are being totally taken care of. For new year's, we went to a huge party in tents that is the Punjab tradtion in Agra. We were the only Westerners there (everyone else was Indian), so we were quite the attraction. We danced almost all night with really enthusiastic folks. We really had a blast. And then there was the food! It was a complete feast...wonderful starters served ... read more
