Hello! How are you all? Well I hope your having as much fun as I am. All of last week I worked at the orphanage just getting used to how things are run there. I really love the work. All the children are really lovely and get so excited when ever we come to play with them. So no I don't think I'll come home wanting to kill children with my bare teeth (who was that any way (mike??) leave a name next time please). But term broke up on friday so I'm now on my holiday in Mahabalipuram. Its sooo good to get away from the noise, pollution and above all smell of chennai. The last few days have been spent looking at rock carvings of various animals and hindu gods dating back to about ... read more

Well I've been in India for a few days now and although some of my first impressions where of shock and disgust at the way some people lived I'm now quite used to it all. Laura who will be volunteering with me got here a few hours before me. She's rarther quiet and says she doesn't want to travel much but I think she'll change her mind once she's been here a bit. Alex who works for the orphanage and is looking after us arranged for us to stay in a YWCA for a few days so that we could get used to India. I think we really needed that due to the weather, food and everything. Yesterday we moved into the orphanage and the room wasn't half as bad as I expected it to be. ... read more

This was my first trip after landing in Bangalore. It was an sudden trip by rams and myself. Since we were only two people we decided to take the TNSTC buses to the falls. We boarded the bus at Silk Board Junction to Hosur since we couldn't get any direct bus to Dharmapuri. We landed up at hosur and since it was weekend all the buses bound to dharmapuri were crowded . It was a standing journey till Dharmapuri. We had our breakfast @ dharmapuri and took a bus to the Hokenakal falls. We reached the falls at around 11.30 . So many people surrounded us asking for the coracle rides. One good guy took us around for Rs 400 and also did some good oil massage . He showed some shooting spots (Films like Roja , Indian ... read more

A group of anxious devotees wait for the word from god. Three men, who would soon be god, stand before the deity. Their faces powdered with turmeric and the tip of their long knives covered with lemons. Another devotee jumps up and down the steps frantically. Monkeys look on as the hysteria mounts. "Annaney koopidu, Annaney koopidu…", a woman screams for an oracle. Others join the chorus. An elderly woman gives them instructions. Most of the men have shaved heads and anointed themselves with turmeric. Annan is Azhakar, the local deity after whom this village, 10 km off Madurai, is named. The rituals would entice him to speak through the man and his two sons. The elder begins to sway. Then it becomes violent. He almost falls into a pit for breaking coconuts. Others hold him ... read more

Three days of rain have painted the delta green. But vast expanses of abandoned paddy field present the real picture: the eternal misery of rural Tamil Nadu. Random blocks of vegetable crops stand out. Farmers have been waiting for the Cauvery to flow and the clouds to open up, for long. Tamil filmdom has just forced itself into a gesture for farmers. But a day after matinee idol Rajnikanth's public fasting in Chennai to counter director Bharati Raja's chauvinistic allegations on the Cauvery issue, farmers in the delta are busy harvesting whatever the sky has yielded. Water, for them, is not politics, but life. The ramshackle bus from Thanjavur goes up to Elakurichi. Villagers wait for any vehicle to take them to their homes, many of which are miles farther. They go on chatting around local ... read more

2001………..6wks-2nd CYCLING TRIP-2,200kms IN SOUTHERN INDIA 10.9.01 Kodaikanal (65km) The ride from Palani to Kodai was a long and exhausting ride that took me 10 hrs with very little rest. Of the 65km, 50km was uphill from 692m to over 2050m. It was a wonderful ride through tropical forest with spectacular views as I gained altitude. The side of the road was a splash of colour with yellows and oranges of lantana, blue minx, morning glory, orange buddleia, purple bougainvillea, and red flame trees. The Greenlands Youth Hostel where I am staying is overwhelmingly memorable. For $11.50, I have a double room with own bathroom and veranda, overlooking what must be one of the world's best views as it looks across other mountains below & down to the Palani Plain. Mist comes and goes and even ... read more

2001………..6wks-2nd CYCLING TRIP-2,200kms IN SOUTHERN INDIA Today’s The Day! Finally after many months of thinking and talking about what must be one of the most researched and planned trips to the mysterious Indian Subcontintinent it’s actually going to happen. I’ve communicated into the ether of cyberspace to people in far off lands and got the lowdown on what to see, what not to see, what smells and tastes to see or more so to avoid, the charms of the people or the scams to be aware of. I begin my adventure by arriving in Bangalore, one of the smaller cities of India- a mere 5.2 million people. Bombay, which no longer exists as it is called Mumbai, is 15 million. I haven’t organized anywhere to stay on my arrival at 1.15am. With pushbike boxed and under ... read more

Here is a compilation of some of The Sounds of India: The loudest horns used as frequently as possible. That truly unappetizing sound made by collecting phlegm in the back of the mouth, usually made just before spitting. HHHHHHckhttt! The beating of laundry on a rock, usually near our bedroom window and always at about 6:30 am. Something - anything - on a loudspeaker full blast. Mamallapuram: world-famous for its shoreline temple. But what's not in the guidebook is the eyesore of a chain-link fence ,keeping out the non-Indians who've decided to pass on the $10 entry fee (!!!) Indians pay 10 rupees (about 25 cents). I couldn't possibly satisfactorily describe how disgusting the trash and effluence was, literally FLOWING across the beach. Fortunately, we had already gotten lunch out of the way, where we happened ... read more

The only buses to Kochi are overnighters, and they're actually somewhat comfortable. Then we took the next bus to Alleppey where the hotels just weren't satisfactory. Imagine that! So instead of staying, we collapsed onto a backwater ferry boat and did nothing but watch the scenery pass for 8 wonderful hours. Beautiful! Peaceful! But what to do next? We gritted our teeth and went to see what the very southern tip of the subcontinent, Kanniyakumari, had to offer. Answer: not a lot for Westerners. We knew that a place as spiritually important as this would be a big pilgrimage site, therefor luring thousands of Indian tourists and kitsch vendors. Imagine our double surprise to find that the holiday of Pongal was upon us! It did look like a good time if you were part of the ... read more
