Me with my bag on!
Just before I set off! Well, here goes my first blog from another country! I've now been in India for just over 2 days but it feels so long since I left the UK. I'm currently sitting in the Deepak Guest House located within the walls of Jaisalmer fort. It's such a nice place and a total contrast to the hecticness of Delhi which was my previous location. So I guess I should probably start from the beginning.
My flight from London to Delhi was pretty uneventful I guess, except for the complaining child hating kickboxer man sat on my row. "where's the continental food selection, I don't want Indian food" Great, I thought to myself.
Was met at the airport and driven to my basic, but alright hotel where I had a nap, I'd not managed more than one hours sleep on my overnight plane you see. Went for a nice meal at Crossroads restaurant in the evening with the group who were nice I had vegetable curry and suffered no stomach complaints as a result :-)
First full day in Delhi consisted of an orientation walk round "Old Delhi" which was certainly eye opening and an amazing experience. As soon as we exited the
hotel I got begged at, and a girl wanted my (Anna's) hat, Alot. But I fended her off and we went on our merry way, to Delhi Metro, which is great, pretty much like the Jubilee line as it is a new development for the upcomming Commonwealth Games (apparently). We then went to a Mosque and had a walk through the spice market (cough, cough, cough) - the spices were so fumey we couldn't breathe until we got on to the rooftop - where we got great views over the city (see pictures if uploading goes sucessfully!). After this we took our first cycle rickshaw back to the tube station. Sam was the only person who nearly got chucked off in a collission, the rest of us were fine, no collissions for us! I did get told off for taking photos in the metro, something to do with them thinking I was casing the joint for a terroist attack I reckon, but the gard did let me keep my picture of the tube map :-)
Then back to Crossroads restaurant for lunch, I had Chickpea masalla which was great.
Then the train journey Delhi - Jaisalmer. Not the most enjoyable
I have to say, but I'm told it could have been worse! At least we had aircon. I guess my main problem was that I'm still jetlagged. Everyone keeps going to bed at 10pm. Which would be fine, except I fall straight asleep, and then wake up at 3am (because for me its like a nap before going out, as 3am = approx 10pm) and I can';t get back to sleep again, which isn't so fun. Everyone's asleep now but I decided to keep myself going until I drop to try and sort out some kind of regular sleeping pattern again. Watch this space.
Now We're in an amazing town, Jaisalmer has such a nice atmosphere, with people talking to us all the time, ensuring us that shopping and spending money is good for the health! I'm not so sure I agree with them, but tomorrow we have a free day so I'm sure to improve my health a little bit. The following day is the cammel safari which I'm really looking forward to! India really is as good as I've been told by some of you. Its bright, cheery and the people are friendly. and WARM! woop. I hear
it's not so sunny back in England at the moment. Sorry.
That's it for now. Keep in touch guys,
Pete
Hmmm, photo uploading didn't work so well, watch this space for uploads....one day!
