Our flight to Jaipur waited 40 minutes on the tarmac before being given clearance to take off, though most of this time was made up during the flight, so we arrived in Jaipur almost on time. We had an airport transfer arranged with our hotel, but he wasn’t there so we found the pre paid taxi booth and organised our own. We are staying at Umaid Mahal, a heritage hotel outside the old city. It was a good choice, large rooms with marble floors, hand painted ceilings and lovely decorative touches (and a sitting room with a well stocked bar), so we’ll be very much at home here. Fascinating Jaipur, dubbed ‘The Pink City’, and Rajasthan’s capital, is the gateway to India’s most flamboyant state. In July 2019, the entire city was declared a UNESCO World ... read more

When I first decided to return to India earlier this year as a solo traveller, I had no intention of revisiting The North. I had, after all, visited the major tourist destinations between Delhi and Kolkata and further north to Darjeeling and Sikkim in 2013, and felt no need to retrace my steps. But then my sister, Ginny, expressed interest in coming along. This will be Ginny’s first visit to India, and not to have a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, walk the ghats of Varanasi or gaze in wonder at The Palace of the Winds in Jaipur would only make for half a trip, so the itinerary was extended. I don’t mind returning to these cities for a second look, as I have found many fascinating places to visit which I didn’t get to ... read more

Hi everyone, our driver took us to his friends jewelry shop and as expected we had the hard sell and succumbed to buying a reasonably good priced pair of earings.I tried to stop Pat buying but unfortunately failed ?? Decided to go to the local bazaars and market. Not for the meek and mild! As soon as we exited the safety of our car we had to cross a busy main road and I mean BUSY. I think we were a source of amusement for the locals as we stepped off the pavement then changed our minds at least three times before taking our lives into our own hands and committing to go. As always every stall or shop owner wants to drag you into his shop. You have to be tough ,smile and walk on. ... read more

The Rajasthan trip was not a sudden plan but after lot of inquiry and web search on places and hotels. We took off on a bright September 2018 afternoon to Jaipur directly from Chennai. Jaipur also called as the Pink city is with many palaces and forts. There is a pink wall in the heart of the city around the market place and covering the old city hence the name pink city. The first day was just a local sight seeing and visit to the city palace, Hawa Mahal, Amber fort, Jal Mahal , Albert Hall and the Abhaneri step well. The summer heat was still strong and the tourists have started flowing in to Rajasthan, Its a favorite destination to many Indians as well as to over seas tourists. The first batch of tourists were ... read more

Hi everyone, we have just had a very exhausting but interesting day sightseeing. Temperature in high 20’s today. Started off going to Amber Fort in Jaipur where one of the tourist attractions is an elephant ride up the long steep road to the fort. We did not do this for the sake of the poor animals. There are 150 elephants giving rides in the mornings and then as it begins to get hotter the elephants go back to elephant village to rest. It is quite a sight seeing so many elephants in one place. Next we were taken to the palace of winds. Then we went to a carpet workshop where we spent about an hour trying to think how we could escape without purchasing a very beautiful rug or carpet. The carpets were amazing. Something ... read more

Hi everyone, At 6.15 am we set off for a 3 hour safari. At this time of the morning it’s pretty chilly so we wrapped up and took blankets and hot water bottles with us. It was so cosy. After more bone rattling roads we were delighted to see two more tigers. What a result. After a late breakfast we moved on to Jaipur. It had warmed up by now and the sun was shining. The route was different so we avoided the horrible unfinished roads. It took 4 hours. On the way we stopped at a community run Craft project aimed at getting women earning for themselves by making all sorts of different crafts. It was very interesting and their work was so inspiring. As we proceeded to Jaipur we passed wild boar sitting and ... read more

Today was a travel day and there’s not much to say. I lounged around the fancy hotel and took a walk around the substantial grounds. There is a multi-day Indian wedding in progress so there were decorations and intermittent music, dancing, and people gathering. In the late afternoon I flew to Mumbai, where the airport code is still BOM for the city’s former name, Bombay. Tomorrow I have a full day of touring, so I’ll report more then.... read more
