I’ve been a little tardy at keeping up to date with this, so much has been happening! So the trip to Jaipur started with a 5am wake up call in Delhi. The trains that I need to get either seem to leave super early or arrive super late. Preferring to leave in darkness rather than arrive in darkness, I take the early ones. I therefore upped and began walking down the lanes towards the station being pretty sure that someone would come along in a rickshaw. Soon enough a rickshaw bike pulled up and pedalled me and my heavy backpack to the station. I’d read so much online about Delhi station and none of it was reassuring. Everyone wrote about too many platforms; information signs that don’t match platforms and having to pay a porter or ... read more

Umaid Bhawan The pre-monsoon heat in Rajasthan makes June part of the low season, when it's easy to score half-price deals on classy hotels that the Rajas in the palaces would have ordered a dozen of their concubines slaughtered just to stay in for a night. Having three sets of eyes on us during the delicious buffet breakfast - ready to leap to meet any of our needs - made it challenging to slide parathas, etc. into our hidden lunch containers. Running in Jaipur? The Collectorate Circle Park has only one thing in common with the old A.E. O’Block Junior High School track: 5 times around equals about one mile. It's in the middle of a 5-10 lane traffic circle (depending on the vehicles currently in it), making access as difficult as putting your hand in ... read more

Woolly says – I was a trifle jaded having been woken constantly throughout the night with other hostellers alarms going off, having lay there growling for several hours I was close to taking matters into my own paws and stamping on the phones responsible for the constant noises, Jo beat me to with the use of a few very rude words, ones that she never lets me use, and I finally managed to dose until someone decided to turn the lights on at 6am! One of the reasons that we don’t use hostels all the time, they might be cheap, but they come with consequences. Woolly says – With our bags packed and left in reception for collection later we sailed forth in a rickshaw to one of the temples I had been hearing ... read more

Woolly says – The traffic never rests in this country and Sunday is no exception. My ears were hurting by the time we arrived at our first pink extravagander of the day, namely the City Palace. Formerly the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan. It was built between 1729 and 1732, initially by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, he planned and built the outer walls, and later additions were made by successive rulers continuing up to the 20th century. Having paid for our tickets which wouldn’t include the palace interior, very pricey and not in our budget, we wandered into the first courtyard. The walls almost looked as they though were a stage set and didn’t really look pink, more of a dusky peach colour. The ... read more

Woolly says – I was delighted to be arriving in Jaipur, since our first discussions of travelling around India had begun it had been top of my list of places to visit. I couldn’t wait to pad round in the footsteps of Dame Judi, Cecila Imrie and Bill Nighy and see if I could do a bit of star spotting into the bargain. For those of you not in the know and having not watched my favourite all time film (with the exception of Ice Age), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a 2011 British comedy-drama film about a group of British pensioners moving to a retirement hotel in India with the most incredible cast, if you haven’t seen it then it’s a must. As we set out with our driver, I kept my eyes peeled ... read more

Another brilliant day and blue sky sunny too. Perfect daytime temperature at about 24 degrees for sightseeing but the evening temperature could do with being a couple of degrees higher as need to wear a jacket against the evening chill and have not really come equipped for that. We were up and out bright and early for our trip to the Amber (Amer to the locals) Fort which is 11 km out of town. We booked a hotel taxi, same as previous day and in fact hadn't even paid him yet for yesterday as he didn't seem to care about when he got his money. Hard to tell where end of Jaipur is as it's quite a big sprawl, but when we spotted a camel being walked down the road we thought perhaps we were into ... read more

First full day in India and we enjoyed it immensely. Woke to blue sky and sunshine which is always an excellent way to start the day. Having decided it was too far to walk to the old Pink City area of Jaipur, we booked one of the taxis outside the hotel. Still totally unsure as to whether they belong to the hotel or not. Once we set off it was quite clear that we will not be walking far from the hotel. The roads are bedlam, that's the best word I can find to describe them. We've visited Vietnam where 6 or even 8 abreast scooters and mopeds at every traffic junction are a normal sight. Here, it's not just motorised 2- wheels, it's also white taxis, multi-coloured and multi-sized tuk-tuks, buffalo carts, horse carts, bicycle ... read more

Had this trip planned for months. Nothing better to beat the January blues than the knowledge that in early February we will be replacing dull, wintry England for warm and exciting India. A little worried the night before we left as forecast was for snow in the early hours, both at home and the airport. Yes it did snow. At least 1mm. It didn't stop us, just made us walk up the path more carefully with the suitcases to Jeremy's waiting car, as he drove us to the airport. This blog entry covers 2 days, Tuesday and Wednesday as when you don't have a sleep between the two it's very hard to say what day was which. Our Emirates flight from Manchester to Dubai was delayed by an hour while they de-iced the wings but we ... read more

The sun had barely risen above the horizon as we bid 'Namaste' to Raju and boarded the car he'd borrowed to take us to Varanasi's little airport. Our fascinating, intensive, exhausting three-week tour along the Ganges had come to an end. We'd been to remarkable places, seen amazing things and travelled a lot of miles - more than 2,000 of them since leaving Delhi. But what did we remember most? A tough question - there were so many wonderful things to remember! However, above all, I think it had to be the people, particularly the new friends we'd made: people like the Saigal family in Haridwar, who'd made us so welcome at the start of our Ganges adventure; like Gagan, who had devoted his time to ensuring we saw at least one tiger a day in ... read more
