For more of my photos, or to buy my book, please visit www.nickkembel.com The first time I laid my eyes on the Golden Temple I was a young pilgrim and India was kicking my ass. My sleepover in the temple was transcendental. The second time, several years later, I had just arrived in the country, having completed an overland journey from Europe to India. And for my third visit, I was in love. --- It is before dawn and the train pulls into Amritsar terminal. I rub the crust out of my eyes as I emerge into the parking lot and I am accosted by a small army of Sikh bicycle rickshaw drivers, every color of the rainbow represented by their tightly wrapped turbans. The air is crisp and hazy. Street dwellers yawn as they ... read more

28/3/10: We arrived in Amritsar at 6:00am and caught a cycle rickshaw to town 3km away. It only cost us 20rs and we thought that was the bargain of the century. We had breakfast and opted to find accommodation together. This backfired big time as we almost spent an hour walking around with our packs on trying to find accommodation for 350rs/night. We found one that was quiet run down and dirty called the Sharma Hotel and decided to keep looking. We ended up come back as there was nothing under 500rs/night and we were tired. We were that exhausted from the train that we ended up having a sleep for a few hours only to emerge from out room around 2:00pm. We thought we had better do something so we went to see the Golden ... read more

India We cross the border that we visited the night before to watch the Border Ceremony, though this time there is little dancing going on. Shame, I thought they did that just for us!!! haha. Amritsar First stop is Amritsar and Sundeep, our guide) tells us of The Golden Temple which we must surely visit. Again, we can also find beer to drink so for a while we are happy bunnies. And so off to the Golden Temple we go. You walk through the many small side streets I get my leg run over by a rickshaw driver, who seems mortified!! Mind you, it bloody well hurt too. Anyway, we stop at one small shop to sample some sweet, it was a very strange thing a bit like some hardened treacle and very very sweet. A ... read more

So we depart on time about 6.15 am from the hotel to find that we arrive at the train station in five mins we walk across the car park and into through the metal detector...security just sit there and we wait for about 40min and our train arrives we hope on and find our seats....a little frustrated that if we had known it was so close we could have walked down the road and around the corner would have taken 10 mins and we could have slept in until 6.30 and still been there in time oh well you live and learn don't you! Seems to be a trend starting here in India of this though! The train is fine the same as the last one but we get food, coffee and water as we are ... read more

From haridwar our spiritual journey went further north, a 7 hour train journey later and the restraint not to yell at the screaming OCD child behind who insisted on kicking my seat as she cried later... we arrived In Amritsar late Sunday evening and checked into a hotel for the night. We were treated to a TV, but no English channels and so spent the evening watching the Star Screen Awards here in India... normally we would of switched straight off, but who's face kept on propping up as he won two awards? Only our Big in Bollywood friend Omi!!! He really has made it and we screamed his name like two adoring fans every time we saw his face... what he was saying we have no idea, but it was Omi making it really big ... read more

17/1/10 Turban heads topped the skyline in dense street after entered into Punjab region. And with more fashionable colour in fabric, men decorated their head with their favourite colour, pink, violet, green, blue yellow, you name it. I saw a man dyeing colour for cotton clothes infront of his shop, inside stack of multi colour turban walled the whole shop front. Sikh men made up part of the scene in Punjab. I was planned to stop over in Chandigarh(@200m), said it was the cleanest and greenest city in India, but when into the city area, it took more than 30 minutes and we still not get to the bus station, and it was enough time for me to see this cleanest city, straight wide street separated block district in different sectors. No character at all, and ... read more

We are now on the Indian/Pakistan border. Our friends' Scott and Bianca introduced us to couch surfing and while in Amritsar with stayed at Mr Singh‘s farmhouse. Mr Singh’s family was originally from what is now Pakistan, but they were forced to leave after the borders were re-drawn following Indian independence. His family was compensated with this fabulous fort which he has restored. We have had a surreal time here. On our first night we were invited to join a group of men from Amritsar who had come to the farmhouse for dinner. They spoke a little English but most of the time we had very little idea what was going on. The second day we met Azad Sidhu. He lived in this area until he was 25 before immigrating to Canada. He had come back ... read more

Day 533: Monday 14th December - The Golden Temple and the Ministry of silly walks We have arrived in the Punjab, the area which spans from Central Pakistan to North-Western India. The Indian state of Punjab is dominated by the Sikh population, who form 70% of the state’s population. In India as a whole, Sikhs are only 2% of the population. Hindu’s form the majority with over 80%, Muslims account for 12%, Christians 2%, Buddhists 1%. Many of the Indians which came to Britain were from the Punjab for the Indian Civil Service and the British Indian Army in particular preferred to recruit Sikhs, which led to the migration of Sikhs into different parts of the British Empire, mainly for economic reasons. Punjab has more ex-patriots than any other Indian state, and has exported its culture ... read more
