India. The highways and streets were quiet at our 12pm arrival. I expected there to be elephants along the roads and beggars on the streets. Instead, it was a quiet, empty drive to Karol Bagh. Our current driver Sanjay is already teaching us Hindi. Namaste ji! The hotel was a surprise. We thought we would have a nice luxury hotel for our first night, after 17 hours of flying. The Hotel Good Palace is nice enough, but it feels very foreign. Example: there are no towels. Also, no hot water. The toilet is western but has both the tap-water for washing and toilet paper. Then there is the shower, which gets very little water and no hot water. There is a bucket and a cup for washing. I’m not sure if I’ll be showering at all. ... read more

I am writing this at about 6 p.m. on Christmas Day here in Delhi. It was a beautiful day here, warm, sunny a light wind. The air seemed cleaner and clearer today ... and I can't tell if it's true, or perhaps I am getting used to the air ... I am still unwell, but starting to feel better. I went to the doctor yesterday and she said I have either the flu or I ate something bad (probably on the train from Hardiwar to Delhi) or some combination of both. So she gave me five medications (every time I go to the doctor here I get five medications!) and told me to eat bland food for a few days. Apparently, you're not supposed to eat on the train, or even drink the sealed, bottled water ... read more

Today's blog is essentially just pictures. I have so many that I wanted to upload, but there appears to be a maximum number per entry allowed. Today the fog rolled into Delhi. I have heard much about this famous weather and today I experienced it. It was the first day I was unable to sit on the terrace under the warm sun for breakfast. The fog brought a chill in the air -- and might be part of the reason I am sick again. I woke up with a headcold or flu today. (An evening out with Ajay and his friends Rohit and Gitan, drinking Kingfisher beer at Shalom, probably didn't help either!) My immune system has taken a beating! I have been basically unwell for weeks, since getting several vaccines in Canada and then an ... read more

Who am I to pretend to understand impermanence? I am the most sentimental, backward-looking fool, despite years of goodbyes. Less than a day away from boarding a flight to return home, I thought I'd take a bit of time to summarize some of the nice aspects of my time in McLeod Ganj during the past couple of months. My initial goal in going was to learn a bit about the Tibetan exile community, to contrast it with what I saw in Tibet and in Nepal, to get an idea of where Tibetans stand on independence and what they are doing to achieve their dreams. My secondary goal was to learn a bit of Tibetan, aside from my traveller's speak. And my usual, continuing goal was to just explore and indulge in the different ways of life. ... read more

A 3:40AM rise in order to catch a train to Delhi - neither activity being particularly pleasurable. Not a single rickshaw in sight, on the one occasion I actually wanted one, so I had to plod to the station. Showing the sort of camaraderie that only foreign tourists a long way from home can display, I said good morning to a European couple who I overtook on the way, and they responded with silence. Using my skill and judgement, I figured that the layout (i.e. where each class of travel was) of the train before mine would be the same as mine, so I positioned myself at one end of the platform in expectation of 2AC coming to a halt right in front of me. Of course, my train was configured in precisely the opposite way, ... read more

We travelled to India for a week for the wedding of Simon's friend Ash to his lovely new bride, Shweta. We also got to catch up with some old friends from home. After the wedding Ash and Shweta treated the guests to a tour of Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal. Over the week we consumed a life-time's quota of curry - buffet style, including for breakfast!... read more

December 16 Finally ... the drugs have taken effect, and today I felt well. I am definitely on the mend. I celebrated by getting an Indian cell phone, having an Ayurvedic massage at Sivananda Yoga centre, visiting Qutb Minar at twilight and going out for dinner with Vivek, a friend of my friend Cynthia's. I am thrilled I managed to get all my ducks lined up and actually purchase a cell phone. It is only for use in India, but it is really going to come in handy. (It already has!) The Ayurvedic massage was a great experience. I was slathered in oils on a hard wood table (looked like teak), thoroughly massaged, including my head, and then I sat in a steam cabinet. It was great. Expensive by Indian standards, the massage cost 6oo rupees ... read more

After having spent two months in Tibet (that is including the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai), over a month in Nepali Tibetan areas, and another 2 months in Tibet-in-exile, I have had a chance to see different forms of Tibetan life. I'm still learning, don't have the answers to the problems, can't predict the future or even the best way to continue. What I have seen in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala is a mixture of continuing efforts at changing the system from within and outside. There are 7 or 8 established NGOs in McLeod Ganj, including the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), GU Chu Sum, Tibetan Youth Congress, Students for a Free Tibet, Tibetan Woman's Association, and others. From their titles, one can guess what aspect of society they are directed towards and ... read more

It's the day / night of the full moon, and here in Delhi that means it's an auspicious time for shoe shopping .... haha, just kidding. But that's what I did today. I went to a new market area (new for me, I mean) called South Extension market, which has great shoe and jewellery stores. I bought three pairs of shoes and a pair of gold earrings. (Still shopping to complete my Indian wardrobe ... and not well enough for anything more strenuous yet .. but feeling better every day ...) I felt very good about negotiating a shopping trip, including lunch, by myself, and even directing the taxi driver back to Panscheel Park. I will get my test next week, as I am planning a short trip out of the city, perhaps to the holy ... read more

Our tour has now started, and the feel of the holiday is different- an element of "if you look to your left, you can see..." has crept in. Two-minute photo stops for the less important monuments; everyone shuffles off the bus, braves the hordes of hawkers and takes an identical photo. But I complain to much- we're certainly packing in the sights, and covering a lot more ground than we would on our own. The group we're with (13 people) is nice, and bizarrely includes the sister of one of Linda's colleagues (Hi Bela!). It would be tedious to list all the things we've seen, but that's not stopped us so far, so here goes: Humayan's tomb in Delhi (Taj Mahal Lite- one of the highlights of Delhi), Qutab Minar (75m high ornately carved tower- possibly ... read more
