Hello We took an overnight train to Delhi. The train ride was a blast! Our Nepalese tour leader, Beebal, suggested it would be a much better journey with a bottle of Indian Rum.. Well the old Monk is Fantastic.. I got hooked on it.. shocking I know. So we had all this rum, bought mix, had no cups.. There were the regular guys on the train selling stuff, so we asked for some cups from the tea guy. Confused the hell out of him, ended up buying cups no tea, he thought we were nuts, but everytime he walked past us, he modified his "tea, chai" to include 'cups'.. the people here must just shake their heads and think ' crazy westerners'. We also played "I spy" and had an absolute blast.. the train was so ... read more

After a very very short stint in New Delhi I made my way up to Rishikesh by overnight bus, I had no idea where to go or stay, not a big surprise quite a common theme with me but I just love idea of just winging it, so far so good. I ended up in Laxman Jhula and stayed right on the Ganges in the Sri Sant Sewa Ashram which was perfectly located, reasonably cheap and quite Shanthi, I was surrounded - music, puja, hundreds of India pilgrims, chanting, bells, incense, sadus....... My aim here was of course to shanthify, explore different types of yoga and just be....I also did a week of what we in the west we call rebirthing, verrrrrrry verrrrrrry interesting the yogi was a very eccentric India man not your typical yogi ... read more

I arrived in Delhi at 4:00 in the morning yesterday. Fortunately, a driver from my hotel was waiting for me at the airport, so I made it to my place with no trouble. Walking out of the airport, my first impression was of the air pollution. It is shockingly bad. There is a smoky haze hanging around all the time, and the smell of exhaust and dirt and smoke. Just on my short ride to the hotel, I very quickly got the sense that Delhi is not the most lovely place. I spent my first day here essentially bedridden. I came down with (ehem) stomach issues on the flight here, and was running a fever. I think I must have gotten food poisoning my last day in Istanbul. Today I have felt better, and it's a ... read more

Well, we finally made it to India On Air Canada (via Toronto and Zurich) about midnight last night Sunday, October 30th. This was Air Canada's inaugral flight into Zurich. As such no one seem to know exactly what to do with the Delhi passengers once we landed. What they finally decided was not to allow us off the plane while attempting to account for all the onboard overhead baggage. We thought this was odd as they made no attempt to account for the baggage on the floor and under the seat. Needless to say, we were late to leaving Zurich and thus late arriving in Delhi. However, we did arrive in time to experience the full day of Halloween in India, not that they celebrate it here! Any way, the driver to the hotel met us ... read more

un hotel million d etoiles? La sagesse de l homme du desert? Pff quelle chaleur! ?

Hey everyone, Last night there were a series of bomb blasts that ripped through New Delhi. The bombs went off near the Railway station. The city is on red alert and security is very high. So if anyone is heading for Delhi this weekend, please stay clear of the city and go to another city close by. Because your bags and haversacks will be checked at every 500m and it could become a major hassle to open and repack your bag every 15 minutes. The cops in Delhi are not at all polite nor do they compromise on anything. So fellow travellers just be careful this week if you are in or around Delhi. ciao... read more

Left Hare Kirshna Guesthouse at 9, decided not to pick up my "Gandi wear" and walked to New Delhi train station. Place was full of touts. Got the last ticket for Haridwar, I had to fill a form and wait for an hour or so to get my ticket. Hardiwar is a Holy Hindu city, located where the Ganges emerges from the Himalaya. Pilgrams go to the city to bathe in the Ganges. Travelled to Old Delhi train station in an auto rickshaw. Four miles of madness. Spent the day in the train station, eating, sleeping and talking to locals. Old Delhi train station is very dusty, lots of stalls selling Chai and fruit, no thanks. Piles of luggage and food are stacked up near the track, ready to be transported. The overnight train journey was ... read more

On the flight to Delhi I met a guy called Dave who worked for the BBC, they were doing a special on India for BBC news. Nice bloke. Didn’t get any sleep on the plane, a little apprehensive. Landed in New Delhi airport. Taxi driver from Hare Krishna guesthouse was waiting for me. I walked out of the airport and the humidity hit me. Taxi was falling apart, rusty and no seat belts. Journey into Pharganj was extreme, lots of poverty. Auto rickshaws, taxis, coaches, cows, monkeys and people all moving in different directions on the same road. It was chaotic. Stopped at traffic lights, a young woman, 16/18 holding a naked baby was asking for spare change, this would be a common occurrence in Delhi. The Hare Krishna guesthouse is a shithole but what can ... read more

UPDATE: Thanks to all who have expressed concern about our safety and the earthquake yesterday. Although Delhi did feel the quake, we were southeast of the city on our way to Agra when it happened. The quake was northwest of Delhi on the border of Pakistan and the death toll has topped 19,000. It is Sunday morning and the last 48 hours have been one of the most stimulating experiences in either of our lives. As Lou and myself are fans of diverse experiences, being in India is like a warped trip to Disney World for us. The culture, sites, sounds, and smells are so unique to our backgrounds that each second is a revelation in itself. As I write this blog entry, we are lounging poolside surrounded by lush gardens and attendants, as we drink ... read more
