We arrived in Jalgaon after a comfy 20 hour train ride. Not much sleep but apart from that it was quiet boring!! Jalgaon is a crap heap. Not alot more to say apart from that. We did however find a nice hotel that was reasonable next to the train station. Luckily we where only using the city as a stop gap for the Ellora and Ajanta Caves. Luckily!! After checking in we consulted the Lonely Planet for somewhere tasty to eat, also our hotel manager recommended a place called Hotel Ayra. So off we trudged very tired to order some more cheese as a substitute to meat. No service after 15 mins and I went to go get some menus, which looked about as old as the original gospels of the bible. Must be popular I ... read more

Afternoon all, Well it's been an interesting few days; in which I have managed to cover a huge part of the country on some long and boring train journeys. During my last day in Varanasi i decided to have a peek at the Hindu University; the university itself was actually fairly standard, the exciting part came when the cycle rickshaw driver let me have a go. All was going well until the guy I was hanging around with decided to take a photo; this led to the inevitable stupid pose at the camera which unfortunately also led to me veering off the road and almost crashing into a fence (pictures to follow!) Moving swiftly on... Following on from Varanasi I decided to visit the town of Bodhgaya which is where the Buddha achieved enlightenment. Subsequnetly the ... read more

Jalgaon Happy to be leaving Mumbai for the last time we navigated our way from the hotel to the train station (all of about 200m) quickly, on a mission, as it was 11.00pm and not particularly pleasant. Thinking ourselves savvy now to the beast that is Victoria Terminus and its inner workings we swiftly ascertained which platform we’d be leaving from and made our way there. Of course once we got there we were informed that there was a change and we were on the incorrect platform so we were then forced to push our way across the tidal influx of passengers departing to make it to the correct platform. Minor difficulty seemingly, but the crowds are frightening. Those who cannot afford a/c class (nearly everyone) push and fight their way onto the carriages - there ... read more

Day 3 The last thing we wrote we were about to embark on our first india train journey. I can tell you I don't think we'll forget it in a hurry!! We arrived at Victoria station, were ushered through by two helpful red t-shirsted porters. People lying all over the platforms, we would have been completely lost if it wasn't for the porters. They took us to a ladies only waiting room, where we sat until our train arrived. Train arrives - People everywhere seemed to be walking off the end of the platfor, who knows! Anyway we got on the train with our luggage into our cabin which was described to us as first class! We slept on plastic mattresses with sheets you wouldn't dream of sleeping in, and two old men! The A/C didn't ... read more

Completely sleeping through my 6.20am alarm meant an extra day in Jalgaon and a lovely lazy morning. I made myself get up in search of breakfast - more eggs, although rather amusingly when I asked for the salt and pepper, first the waiter looked blankly, then gasped in understanding and skuttled off to return with a napkin and glass, further attempts yielded no better - an ashray! Jagaon is a standard Indian town, but it has retained it's past unlike some other cities; the old two story wooden houses with balconies and alcoves have not be replaced by concrete blocks and there was even a clock tower at the heart of the town, albeit rather modern. It's main tourist pull being its convienent location to Aganta Caves and many people whistle through arriving late and leaving ... read more

Wow, 19 hours on a train? What are you thinkin? THats prolyl what you are thinking at this point. But 19 hours on a train is not like 19 hours anywhere else. We entrained at 1:30 am and groggily made our way to our berths. I took the top bunk and put all my stuff and me up on the bed. It wasnt the most comfortable situation, but it worked and I fell deep asleep. They had to wake me up to give me blankets. I eventually woke up after hours of restless sleep at 9 am. We had a breakfast of kabobs on the train and then I promptly went back to sleep. I woke again to have a lunch of daal, rice, roti and something very very liquidy which I poured all over my ... read more
