Having had a very disjointed night’s sleep on the train courtesy of our cabin mate the Indian lumber jack, I looked out the window, and surprise surprise saw more rubbish littering the line of the tracks. It was 6.30am and soon we would arrive in Bangalore City Junction station. It was time to mentally prepare myself for all the pleasures of the typical Indian city, the tour agents, hagglers, rickshaw drivers, all in sundry after a piece of my currency. By now I feel I have mastered the ability to be courteous and entertaining to them, yet stay firm and numb to their obvious poverty. I will never treat any person like a dog, yet I’m no Mother Teresa. Storm and I ventured off in hunt of a internet cafe, but being so early on a ... read more

Just before the plane descends, I make a quick trip to the bathroom. I've sat in the middle seat on every flight and hate to disrupt my fellow passengers in order to get out - particularly the young, serious man sitting beside me who boarded the plane in Paris. Though we sit nearly touching, we haven't spoke a word the entire trip. I did hear his voice right before take-off as he concluded a phone call with someone I somehow suspect was his mother, or a lover. "Ciao!" "Ciao" "Ciao!" he bellowed before hanging up. I had a feeling he needed his space and decided against aimless small talk. I settled into my seat again only to remember that I needed to get my backpack from the overhead bin to ready my passport for customs. I ... read more

I pick up my bags, take a deep breathe and head to the door. Father Joe prepared us, too, for what we will encounter outside and exactly where Father Nelson will be waiting for me. I've been told to look left upon exiting the door. I expect to be greeted by a swarm of taxi drivers and hotel workers offering to transport me just as my friends and I were when we arrived in Costa Rica last year. One of my fellow India pilgrims said that the first moment outside the airport into another country is often the most delirious. It certainly was in Costa Rica. But as I walk out the door into India, I am greeted not by a throng of taxi drivers, but by darkness and a cool breeze. A barricade keeps the ... read more

So here we are again! Today is our final day in Bangalore as we are heading to Trivandrum (or Thiruvananthapuram) in Kerala this afternoon. We've had a great time here, risking our lives trying to cross MG Road, going on mad tuk tuk rides and eating a lot of very good food. We went to the local aquarium for Rs5, visited Cubbon Park where we made friends with a keen cricket fan and have been very well looked after by Amitha. On Sunday, we went to visit Mysore Palace, some 200km away but really worth the long drive as it is absolutely stunning. Yesterday, we were taken shopping by Sneha in Commercial Street and bought our very first Salwaar kameez! This actually came in pretty handy since we later got '"invited" to the big Indian wedding ... read more

Namaste! So we finally made it! After a long wait, two tiring flights, being questioned upon arrival by immigration and a near death experience on the taxi ride in (which took about 40min to find), we arrived at our friendly little hotel and passed out. Today, the weather is approximately 35 degrees C and the skies are lovely and blue. After organising our accommodation for the next few nights, we decided to head out to Lalbagh Botanical Gardens in our first ever tuk tuk ride. A rather scary experience to say the least! Apart from ambling around and enjoying the beautiful flower displays along with many Indian tourists, we had our first taste of fame. We have already shaken about one hundred school children's hands and been in many a family photo and video!! We have ... read more

For once I was able to leave work while the sun was still shining. We’ve been working so late that the only thing to do once we get home is eat and drink and waste time until we can get back up and do it all over again. I had been counting the minutes until I could leave mainly because 1) I really wanted to see what Bangalore looked like in the daylight again 2) my roommate bought a case of Kingfisher and a hookah rig the night before and was in obvious need of some company, which me and JS provided in excess as usual and 3) no one should ever have to work on a Sunday anyway. On the drive home from work, as I was clutching my head in my hands, taking deep ... read more

This Sunday was Independence Day in India and we went to the flower festival in the Bangalore Botanical Gardens to celebrate. It’s nothing like the 4th, no fireworks or anything, but still pretty fantastic! I asked people who they were celebrating their independence from but was told no one in particular, they were just happy to be independent from someone. Maybe I look British to them. The gardens were wall to wall Indians and 5 white girls. There were so many people jammed into this place that there was a guy beating people back with a stick just to get the crowd under control. Of course, and for no apparent reason, we were escorted right past all the crowds of people and led directly into the park. I felt pretty horrible about it…but not enough that ... read more

The AirFrance flight from Paris to Bangalore was good. Minor bumps, etc. The plane was kind of rickety and made all sorts of creaking noises and the stewardess needs a new job. On the flight to Dublin my wine glass was kept full without me even needing to ask. On this flight, I spent 10 min trying to get the stewardess' attention and when she finally came over I raised my glass and asked for more wine. She took my glass and never returned. I had to flag down a different attendant. We went through this same procedure about 5 more times. And here I thought wine was their thing! Anyway, other than the judgmental stewardess the flight was good. It was business class so I got to lay down again! So finally got to India ... read more
