At about 10,000 ft above sea level, you do feel quite literally on top of the world in Ladakh. And curiously, there's also almost some sort of palpable sense here of being close to the horizon where heaven and earth meet. The air is pure. The location remote. And the snow on the encompassing mountains is dazzling white. This place is a veritable mountain Shangri La. The flight up was very exciting. The aircraft passed through mountain corridors meaning that looking out the windows on either side all you could see was wall after wall of sheer rockface. Soon after arrival, I started suffering some mild symptoms of altitude sickness - headaches, fatigue and breathlessness. The rarefied mountain air gets to most visitors eventually and luckily I had packed with me appropriate medication to combat the ... read more

The airport in Leh makes Ladakh an easily accessible place. But the only way to get a sense of how isolated and remote this region is is to travel there overland. It is less than 500km from Manali but the bus journey takes 2 days, stopping overnight in Keylong, presumably because it is unsafe to travel the winding mountain road in the dark. Keylong is the last town before you reach Leh, and in the 15 hours of travel between the two points, the only signs of human habitation are the occaisional makeshift hamlets serving food to travellers, shepherds camps, work crews and, particularly once you enter Jammu and Kashmir state, military bases. The vast mountains, valleys and plateaus are not only almost entirely void of human life, but that of plants and animals too. The ... read more

So, finally we've moved on. Some days ago (5 maybe..) we set out from McLeod on the night bus to Manali. It's about 10 hours. It was ok. We actually managed to sleep most of the way. So Manali's an experience. It's in a beautiful little valley with mountains like a wall all around it. Also we arrived simultaneously with the end of monsoon, witch means we had two days of brilliant sun. We lived in old Manali filled with flowers and apple trees, and it was just what we needed. I could get a proper Indian meal for the first time, and it was so good! It was like I hadn't had food for a month. The downside of Manali is the Israelis. There are loads of them. Much because of all the marijuana that ... read more

After four days travelling through the most stunning scenery, I was almost afraid of being disappointed in our destination, Leh. While the scenery was not quite as dramatic as the journey, Leh is definitely a special place and was an excellent final destination to our trip. Leh is an awesome little town that seems to give itself over to tourism in the brief summer months. For the rest of the year, the Manali - Leh road is shut and the only way into the area is by aeroplane. Most things shut down and the roads are icy and dangerous. The schools even shut for up to three months in the depths of winter so conditions must get pretty extreme! The town reminded me a bit of Chang Mai in Northern Thailand - the same sort of ... read more

Some places are such that when you think of capturing the beauty of it in words, you feel afraid that you will do injustice. Ladakh was an experience like that for me. It was so overwhelming in its grandeur and visual experiences that I kept postponing this blog for months. I would stare at the pictures and loose myself in those unforgettable moments. 5-days for experiencing Ladakh is really too short. But that was all that we had - Debdeep, Maya and me. Debdeep is in some sense my photography guru and to get him to accompany us in this trip was a bonus. There is no place in Ladakh which does not seem to explode with photographic grandeur - every mountain, every monastery, every angle. One can go completely berserk snapping pictures, and still feel ... read more

August 3, 2008 Well I have been in Leh and the Indus Valley now for about 6 days now; it feels much longer. I have pretty much gotten the feel of the place which ranges from utter reverence to distaste. The distaste can be described as the pollution from the cars that choke the life out of the small alleyways here and the hoards of tourists. There was a protest to ban the cars from the main bazaar, but from what I have learned politically, there is no real local governing body in Leh. The locals have little say in th ongoings of their town and the Jammu and Kashmiri government has bigger concerns in Srinagar to be “wasting” time on Ladakh. I tire easily of the tourist energy so I find myself looking for solitude ... read more

JULY 29, 2008 Leh, Ladakh - Jammu and Kashmir I write now from Leh, Ladakh in the Himalayas in the subdistrict of Jammu and Kashmir. I had to be at the airport at 3:30 AM to catch a flight to Leh at 5:00. The flight was only 1 hr and 10 min from Delhi for $85…I got a deal. Flying into Leh was amazing as we approached the runway. . The pilot had to skillfully navigate the mountains into the Leh Valley here….and it appeared at times like the tips of the airplane wings would clip a mountainside! Of course the passengers clapped upon successful landing. The view from the airplane was phenomenal…the Himalayas are beautiful and a dream come true for me to see. Ever since I was young and even recently, I would flip ... read more

I have briefly left my desert home in Maharastra and head up North to the Himalayas. I am in a tibetian town called Leh and I feel like I am on a whole other planet not to mention no longer in India. Women are wearing long black dresses with wooly vests over them and monks are running a muck! well I dont know about a muck but they are everywhere. The entire town is surrounded by beautiful mountain and down here in the valley we are at 12,000 ft. We began our journey by car from Meherabad to Mumbai at 7:00 am on the 15th. We got on a plane from Mumbai at 7:00 pm to arrive in New Delhi at 11:00 pm. We then sat around in the airport until 2:00am when we could go ... read more

In far northern India, precariously rests the gem in the crown of India, the state of Jammu and Kashmir. And in that far northern state lies a remote and sparsely populated region called Ladakh. The name in the Ladakhi language literally is La-Dags, and means 'land of high mountain passes'. Ladakh, one of the last refuges of Mahayana Buddhism in the world, is also called 'Little Tibet' or the 'last Shangri-La'. It lies cradled high in the Himalayas, between the Karakoram and Great Himalayan ranges. So for me, as soon as school was out for the 'summer' and I had endured enough of monsoon drenched Mumbai, I went north to the high altitude snow desert that is Ladakh! In general, there are two ways to get there - at least in the summer. In the winter, ... read more

Julley, Julley, Julley!!! (Greeting in Ladakhi) Out of the window rises the majestic ladaki range and prayer flags flutter on the street below vieling the old palace on the hill. What a journey to arrive in Leh! Delhi wasn't quite so appealing. We procured a prepaid taxi to the ymca in connaught place which ensure that you get to your safe destination yet it however does not ensure a safe ride!! Lanes? Trafic lights? People? Who cares! Just honk and excellerate. Weaving through large trucks and many motor-rickshaws we made it alive to the YMCA. Afer a grueling day in Delhi, and many more crazy rickshaw rides later we ended up with what we most desired and what we most trying to avoid--a plane ticket to leh the next day and getting a bit ripped off. ... read more
