Just a day away from our dream trip!!! Most of the things are all set, all prepared for surprises. Monsoon in India is always a huge challenge (http://in.news.yahoo.com/20/20100616/1416/tnl-monsoon-rains-pelt-maharashtra-46-de.html), 46 People dead in Maharashtra due to Monsoon. Hopefully this Monsoon will not make life difficult during our trip. We are constantly checking the situation in Manali (we heard the roads are closed due to landslide). Wish us luck!! All, This blog is an attempt to explain my experiences on road from Bangalore to Leh!! I’m also trying to put a blog that will help travelers in future! Our destination was Khardung La pass (highest motorable place on earth) …. This trip was being planned for about 2 years; we had our own trouble in making this a success story. One fine day we thought that we have to make this a success or it will be grey spot on our traveling history! With very limited knowledge about how things will work out, we finalized 18th June as the start date.. Fortunately all the guys got the leaves approved (very lucky). We thought that getting everybody together was the biggest problem, but when in reality it turned out to be least of our concern. Out ... read more

In order to get to Srinagar, one must first go to Jammu, a place that had not received flattering reviews from those I’d spoken to who had been. We jumped on the local bus at Dharamsala, for what should have been a 5 hour bus journey, but as is so often the case in these matters it turned out to be more like 8 hours, after the bus scraped a car that some fool had parked right in the middle of the street and we took an off-road diversion through a dusty quarry. So a little later than expected we arrived in Jammu, hot and eager to get on. The bus station in Jammu is not a nice place; there’s no pavement and its basically a main road, furthermore, the gutters are piled high with rotting ... read more

This blog covers the period Nov 8-14,2009. I’m getting to know a few of the students’ names now. Six (four girls and two boys) out of the 38 are called “Stanzin” which should help but doesn’t. Their photos are also all hung up in the kitchen but I only discovered this fact this week, and some aren’t easily recognisable from their photos. There’s a few other first names shared by two or three kids, and two girls have exactly the same name (first name and surname). I guess Ladakhi just doesn’t have enough names to go round. I still don’t know most of their names, but at least I can recognise nearly all the students now, so I bet if I stayed another week or two after this one I’d have most of the names down ... read more

I’d been wanting to do some volunteer work for a while, but it’s hard to find places that aren’t dodgy or don’t expect you to pay them a fortune for the privilege of working for them. I’d heard about an NGO/school called SECMOL near Leh, and emailed them before I went to Leh last time (the blogs two and three blogs ago). Their webpage said that they sometimes take a week or two to reply. Just as I was leaving Leh last time, I emailed them again, as by then it was nearly two weeks. They replied that they’d got me mixed up with someone else. Apparently another “Daniel” from Australia turned up just after I emailed and they thought he was me. By the time I discovered this I was back in Delhi. I’d tried ... read more

Probably because I’d come from Manali which is about 2000 metres above sea level, and come over the higher passes, the altitude in Leh didn’t affect me too much. Leh is at 3500 metres. I still found that I’d get a bit out of breath, and times when I’d suddenly feel a bit like I hadn’t been breathing enough. Other people also reported weird dreams, which I also had to some degree. It was also very cold. I bought another jumper and a thick woollen jacket, which of course became a massive burden to carry around after I left Leh. I spent about ten days there, doing a few tours to surrounding areas and hanging around the town. The weather would be freezing cold at night and quite warm in the day, meaning that if you ... read more

Yes you guessed it we couldn't resist the place.....we found a cheap flight and now we are back in India! We decided to go as north as we could to a place called Leh in Ladakh, it is right in the Himalayas (again) its beauty is absolutely breathtaking, as you will see on the photos. Helen thinks its what heaven should look like, its her favourite place so far and its definately one of mine too. First we had to get to Manali then we had to get to Leh. We discovered that the only way is by shared jeep or mini bus. We were told that if we pay and extra 100 rupees each as it was a 20 hour journey,we would get the daddy seats with lots of leg room so we went for ... read more
