Our local beach shack is called First Base and we've become regulars for lounging in the sun. The waiters accost every white person who passes, learn there names and have a chat - all to get them to stop there. Whenever we walk out of the hotel gate, Leo shouts "David, Katherine!" which makes it difficult to go anywhere else! The waiters then come running over to shake our hands, the same happens after eating when the owner joins in as well. However, the food is very nice as is the fresh watermelon juice so we like it really. They also lent us a couple of body boards which were fun to attempt to surf the beakers in - Kathy maintains she was the best but... We tend to spend our days lounging around on the ... read more

We've left the madness of Mumbai behind and arrived in lovely Goa. It much calmer and there are beautiful beaches, but its still virtually impossible to walk down the road without being acosted by every shop owner/waiter/taxi driver who want you to give them some business. Even on sun loungers on the beach its difficult to avoid them!... read more

To our amazement and relief, our train left Mumbai on time (yey!) 6.55am and was only an hour late arriving in Magagoan, about 7pm. We caught a cab to Colva, which was only about 10mins away, where we checked into a pretty average beachside hotel, the Colmar Beach Resort. While ok at first, it actually turned out to be a bit of a nightmare, largely due to the extremely noisy neighbors and the rather large and fast moving bugs that emerged from the drain! After a quick shower, we headed out for a bite to eat at the Sea Pearl Hotel. The food here was a mix of Indian and Continental, with plenty of sea food, so Dan was pleased, and all at a very reasonable price. After dinner (and a few beers!) we took a ... read more

Hi all, Goa is the kind of place we wouldn't come to usually. It has beaches, coconut palms, middle aged sunburned fat drunken English tourists watching the cricket, hippies and it is as hot as QLd at christmas. But its OK. We went to the most developed areas for a few days - Calangute, Baga, Anjuna. Some good food there. Lots of stuff for sale, most of it crap. Beaches are a nightmare - you walk onto the sand and are swamped with touts trying to get you to lie on their sunbeds or sell you jet ski rides. Not relaxing at all. We are now at a less developed place which is quieter and easier but the food is not as good and there is very little to do for two non beach people (thanks ... read more

Another full moon just happened, which means we've been travelling for a little over a month! Without a calendar and regular contact with the outside world, we've been losing track of the days. Right now we're taking it easy for a week or two, relaxing on a beach in South Goa. It took us 12 hours on the day train from Mumbai (the foreigner's line at the station had a 2 hour wait, and the night train was booked solid for the next couple of days) and we arrived in Margao in the evening. We are now train converts - it's 100 times more comfortable than those jarring sleeper buses! We decided to head straight to Colva and got the last room at Colmar beach resort (500 Rs - we paid too much). We dropped our ... read more

Colva, Goa, is all about the sun, sand and sea. It has a distinct holiday feel; cocktails out of coconut shells on the beach, palm trees and water sports a plenty. There is a fishing community here, many old wooden fishing boats bob in the sea, and occationally men from the beach haul in huge nets, with the catch of the day inside. Colva also feels distinctly less like a part of India. Its beautiful here, but I miss the spirit of my India. We have spent the days lazing in the sun, swimming in the pool and the sea, browsing the little scattered stalls, buzzing around on Scooters and today went on a boat trip to see some doplphins We have spent nights looking at fireworks from the beach, falling out of hammocks, drinking ... read more

After a 27 hour train journey we have arrived to Goa where the Sun, Sea and Sand are our new found Gods! Train Journey; I must breifely record the train journey, as traveling on train is one of my favorite things about India. As it was such long haul to Goa, we each had a wee bed, 6 in each open cabin. The cabins were about 10 feet high at the most, the bed 6 foot long and about 4 feet wide. My bed the highest (below were two other beds) and bascially you could stick your head out, into the corridor and see other people right down the train. There is no such thing as privacy in India. So this was our little spot for the next 27 hours. The Indians are so friendly , ... read more
