It’s the last night of our last full day and Jared and I are both feeling what everyone feels at the end of a trip - sad for it to end, but excited to get home and start moving on with all the other exciting stuff we have to look forward to (stay tuned, we’re gonna keep writing!). It’s just that, it wasn’t until the last few days that we felt like we got the hang of all of this...although I think that’s often the case when you travel. The first week of a trip, especially to a country like India, is overwhelming and action-packed. It’s hard to just relax, even though it’s often the whole purpose of the trip. There’s a bit of guilt involved, you’re trying to detach yourself from all of your other ... read more

Dear All Sorry for the delay on the updating of our blog site. We have met some wild and wonderful people. We have relaxed by the beach, climbed waterfalls, gone to religious festivals, eaten great food and have great memories of our first 2 weeks of our travels spent in Goa. I have uploaded a few photos so that you can see what we got up to... read more

So as much as Jared and I were enjoying the family like atmosphere of the VG, we were looking forward to some luxury and anonymity. Unreliable a/c (in 95 - 100 degree weather), a bad internet connection (yes, we’re that addicted) and constantly making conversation with the hosts had us anxious to get to the Hyatt. Not to mention that we were looking for some new surroundings and knew that these were going to be plush. See, I had managed to score us a ridiculously good deal on our room there. I had gotten 25% off the Hyatt’s guaranteed “best rate” and then managed to get us upgraded to one of the nicest suites on the property. We had taken a peak at the room online, and it looked like it was going to be bigger ... read more

Not alot to report, I've had a nice chilled out weekend, checking out the beaches. Went to Colva and Benaulim beaches, fairly touristy ( Colva more than Benaulim) but not too bad. was fun watching the parasailing ( rather them than me!) Found a lovely quiet beach yesterday not far from my hotel, Bollywood beach, a real paradise beach. White sand, hardly any people and no sellers! Tan is coming along nicely! It was quite revolting having to pass the area where they dry the fish in the open air, that apparently the locals like to eat with a beer! Off to do a bit of exploring today. Going up to Ponda to see the temples and the Spice plantation, hopefully feed some elephants... Big hugs...Lx... read more

Our travel drama didn't stop once we got our flight from Jo'berg, when we arrived at Mumbai international we ordered a taxi to take us to our backpackers lodge in Colaba, which is the southern tip of Mumbai. We arrived and the receptionist told us that they had no booking for us and that they had no double room and no dorms. I just stood there and told him we had booked so he should sort something, I was way too tired to go looking for somewhere else havin not slept on the plane. He couldn't find anywhere in the same price bracket so instead of spending Rs2000 for full board we end up in a hotel around the block with B&B for Rs5000. I guess you have to expect to be ripped off when you ... read more

So that's exactly what I did! And note to self: never book a room with shared bathroom just for the sake of a few Rupees! Got a bus from the chaotic Panjim bus stand to Margao which took about an hour. The sign above the ticket booth made me laugh though..'two seats reserved for ladies and freedom fighters'! When I got on it was so crowded and so hot I thought I would pass out but once we got started, apart from one or two near misses, it was fine. It took me some time to realise I was in the seats reserved for 'ladies. only'...but I am a laydee!! I then had my first experience of a Tuk Tuk, a little 3 wheeler jobby with a 2 stroke engine. These guys just do what they ... read more

This document was handed to me by a disgruntled Englishman who, so I was told, has now left India for a more secure and friendly place to live. I have copied it verbatim and have left nothing out. I shall send copies to all the concerned Agencies, High Commissions, F.R.O’s, Newspapers etc to see if we can get a credible answer as to why ‘Foreigners and British tourists in particular, are not welcome in India.’ Does India deserve to have tourists? India, the exotic destination which many dream of seeing. The very word conjures up a vision of colourful garments and spices, palaces, the Taj Mahal, tea plantations, coconut trees, elephants in ceremonial dress leading dramatic parades through the streets, the amazing railway system, the busy noisy roads where anything goes while avoiding the cows - ... read more

Having finished our 20 month "vacation" six months ago we felt it was time to properly finish our trip by updating the website to reflect our status, why we haven't done it before now I don't know, but here goes..... We checked out of Singapore finally after dashing through the border here on a few occasions,we were the only westerners on our flight with cheap Tiger Airways in Singapore's low cost terminal, unsurprisingly we found no Swimming Pools, wireless Internet or Rolex Watches unlike our last flight from this financial city, what we did find was a plane full of Indian passengers checking in 40 to 50 kilos each, every other passenger checking in Televisions or washing machines, obviously a few folk had been on a shopping trip in Singapore! One plump chap in front of ... read more

The pace of living slips down a notch in Goa, and we had no problem following suit......once we got into the swing of things. We'd made loose plans for the Portuguese 'state' but these could have changed on a 3-second whim or by a passing comment by a random stranger. When our taxi driver questioned our directions to Panjim, the Goan capital, (where the Lonely Planet advocated two days minimum to soak in the architecture and city's culture) we agreed he should skip the busy city and drive us directly to the beach instead. Thank god we followed our intuition. driving through Panjim en route to Anjuna Beach revealed nothing special and certainly nothing worth two precious days. Speaking of the Lonely Plant, we've come to the conclusion that the Goan section's writer and editor ingested ... read more
