Having had enough of the crowds, pollution, noise and hassle we came to Diu to take it easy for a couple of days. While approaching Diu we didn't notice any difference to rest of the India but just when we arrived to Diu it all changed. It was cleaner, greener, quieter and less crowded. We stayed in Magico do Mar, a hotel by the beach just outside Diu. We got a nice cottage next to the beach, which was quiet and beautiful. Just like we had dreamed of. Diu is a small island, around 20km in length, just off the coast. Diu is its own state and whereas in Gujarat alcohol is prohibited, it is allowed in Diu. Diu is a holiday destination for Indians but there are not so many western tourists. Diu used to ... read more

I have arrived to the cutest little town of Diu after a six hour bus ride from Bhavnagar. It was actaully a pretty good ride...well kinda...I saw two men piled on top of eachother after a fresh bike accident. The locals were trying to tell me they were not dead. I think two men lpiled on top of eachother bleeded and not moving and not breathing would be considered meeting the maker...but I think that what bothered me was it was like an average thing. I wanted to puke and people just stared like it was ok. Not that it was ok that I puke but that is was ok these guys lay bleeding and even if they were alive why was no one working on them?? anyways. So on the bus ride it was good ... read more

For the past five days, I could swear that I have not been in India if it were not for the fact that there are still Indians everywhere. There’s no one trying to sell me anything, no one trying to rip me off, no one really begging. And then on top of that, I’m on a small island with loads of deserted beaches to relax and lounge on. Okay, it’s not really as nice as I’m making it out to be. This morning I still saw a guy throwing some sort of sewage/waste/defecated material into the sea from one of the hotels today. Fortunately, the beaches are on the other side of the island. And instead of deciding to bargain my way around by rickshaw, I rented an awesome little scooter to cruise around on. Maybe ... read more

Namaste, I promised you an update exclusively on Diu, a lovely island that was foremerly a Portugese colony. And so I start of from Bhavanagar in Gujarat... Today was spent on a bus most of the time. I took a state bus out of Bhavanagar and towards Una en route to the island of Diu. I arrived to Una only to find out that the entire bus station parking lot was flooded in a few inches of water. The only save heaven from the water was the standing covered waiting hall, which was on a bit higher grond then the road. I waited and waited, carrying my heavy backpack as the floors were wet, until the bus arrived. There were 3 foreigners on the bus, a sight I haven't seen for a few days. Once in ... read more

The Journey To Diu the bus set out from udaipur, stopped in rajkot at 6 in the morning, we were kicked out, told to sleep on a bench in an office for 3 hours, then herded onto the most awful bus on earth and packed like sardines for another 5 hours, then reached veeraval, took the bumpiest and dustiest ride since pokhara for another 2 and a half hours, then reached una where we had to change for another bus to diu town. phew... we finally made it.. dusty... disjointed and almost wanting to go all the way back to udaipur to smack that bastard around the face for lying.. i feel new and invigourated. after the most hellish journey here we are finally in DIU and it is simply an oasis of calm. there is ... read more
