After a pleasant week in New York City visiting with with my family, Priya and I boarded an Emirates Airlines flight from JFK to Dubai. Somehow, even though we booked our tickets 6 months in advance, we ended in in the very back row, right next to a bank of lavatories. The main problem there was the traffic. But, we did a good thing listing our food preference as "Hindu Meal". All of the special meals were brought out first, easily 45 minutes before the rest of the meals. So, we ate and settled in to try and sleep before many passengers had even gotten their dinner. I had hoped to sleep on the flight, but being tall with long legs - in regular class - it was virtually impossible to find a comfortable position. I ... read more

Returning from Kathmandu to the mad hustle and bustle of India was always going to be difficult for us…but to go from Bhutan, the most chilled out place I have ever been, turned out to be a nightmare!! Being back in India is pretty hectic and the cities are like London on fast forward!! Calcutta turned out to be loud, leery, and suffocating. To make matters worse we seemed to spend 2 days working out how to get out of the damn city - Indian Challenge Anneka Rice! Our destination was a very hard to pronounce beach town in the south east and the event…a real Indian wedding between Victor (one of my work colleagues) and Florence. We hastily arranged outfits for the occasion I went for an Indian look with a cross between a dress ... read more

On our last day in Arangubad we got up late, ate the continental Buffet breakfast (45Rs! - which is about 50p) (All you can eat!) Mooched about the hotel room mostly, but we did go to the stationary shop (shack) and get some supplies, ie new pen, and almost ended up with A1 graph paper. We ate our last meal at the hotel and went to the train station to catch the overnight train to Sercunderbad, which is right next to Hyderabad. Lots of stares and funny looks at the station but nothing to worry about. Luckily we were sat next to an elderly couple who even offered to give yas some of their dinner! Didnt get much sleep and yas told me someone tried to touch her in the night - NOT HAPPY. Fell asleep ... read more

The cabin crew announced the approaching of Port Blair airport. I tried to take a peek down from the window. Oh God! I think this is what called love at first sight. I could only see a combination of different sheds of blue and green. The green isles with dots of thatched roofs floating across a vast expanse of emerald blue water. Are there so many shades of blue? As the plane started lowering itself, I could see different shades of blue & white water, how it varies from; white at beach to light blue, dark blue and blue and blue. When we decided early September, the mid rainy season for my holiday to Andaman & Nicober Islands on Indian Ocean, I was told this is not the best time for a trip to this part ... read more

It may have been soft but not without a lot of pain. After swilling far too many beers with Will and Sophie et al. in Bangkok we got up bleary-eyed with throbbing heads and late for the airport to catch our long awaited flight to India. We need not have hurried. Within minutes of getting in the cab we hit the dreaded Bangkok traffic. At 8am it took more than an hour just to get to the airport expressway. A drive that usually takes about 20 minutes when it's not peak time. Once there we had to stand in an infernally slow moving line. Some people always have trouble with the simplest things in life. We had two prime candidates for the Darwin awards in front of us. After half an hour Dumb and Dumber were ... read more

I've had a very interesting last few days. Yesterday we spent a few hours doing pearl shopping at a lovely store which sells all kinds of beautiful jewelry. Shopping in India takes quite a bit longer than at home. First they bring out what seems like their entire selection, and it just keeps coming. It wa the same thing with the sari shop. Next you have to have a cup of chai as you deliberate on your purchases. Then the bargaining begins. Even at the pearl shop, there was a bit of debate over how much of a concession I should get because I was there with Aunty, who is a valued customer. After pearl shopping we returned home, where Vashida, a Muslim girl who does Mendhi was waiting to tattoo my hands. I now have ... read more

Well, I suppose I should start with yesterday. Early in the morning I went to pick up our Harry Potter books. It took quite a lot of willpower not to start reading it in the car but somehow I managed. The main thing that I did yesterday was I spent quite a bit of time buying the various other things one needs when wearing a sari. First, I went to a sari/fabric shop to get some fabric for a new blouse for a sari that I already had. Then we went to the tailor, and explained all the work I wanted done. I'm getting four blouses made, having five saris finnished off, and having two petticoats altered (which I also had to buy seperately). When we got to the part about measuring for the blouses, however, ... read more

Well, today was my second full day in Hyderabad and I'm having a wonderful time. Today was a designated shopping day since I didn't really bring any clothes and have been borrowing Nandy's for the past few days. So today I bought quite a lot. We started at FabIndia, a store which specializes in cottons with vegetable dyes. I bought six kurti for about seven dollars each (a kurta is a tunic-like top) and two pair of shalwar (pants) to go with them. Also I got two dupattas (neck scarves) to wear with the kurti and shalwar. Next we went to Stopper Shop, which is more trendy type clothes. There I got a nice churidar-kurta set. Churidar are also pants, but they are about two feet two long and very tight towards the ankles, and you ... read more

This is the end of my second day in Hyderabad, and I have a lot to report. I suppose I'll start at the beginning. My flight to Newark was fairly uneventful, and when I got on the Air India plane any worries I had about the flight went away. However, in between Newark and Paris I got rather sick and threw up three times. Once we left Paris though I was fine. The flight went well and I landed in the Mumbai airport. Mostly I spent my layover sleeping, and getting to Hyderabad was quite easy (although my flight was delayed for four hours). Once I got to Hyderabad, Venki Uncle's secretary, Shyam, and his driver, Ramesh, were there to pick me up. We drove to Venki Uncle and Sue Aunty's house, which is quite lovely. ... read more

Hello again We'd just like to say we hope everyone who lives in London is safe and sound. News of the bombing reached India in dribs and drabs, but we managed to piece together the events by the following morning. Hopefully things are returning to normal now. It seems strange seeing London on the news everyday now, and being so far away from everything. We dearly hope none of you were affected. After nearly a week's stay with Tanuja's very over-excited grandmother teaching David hindi intensively for at least two hours everyday, we decided to visit Hyderabad. It's probably not in the top ten places to visit in India but we both wanted to go because it's a remarkable mix of the very very old and very very new .It's nickname is Cyberabad because so many ... read more
