Hello Friends, Well, I think that after a first week of wondering if I could stand it here for six months, I think I may be able too after all. I’ve made an effort to get out and do as much as I can, and thankfully I’m at an institution that has the same philosophy for its students. Yesterday I joined the group of social workers here at HMI for a conference on their ‘City Day’, or activities from 9 am to 10 pm. First, we went to the Old City to browse the used book stalls, a popular Sunday activity. I was so surprised at what I saw for sale—basically, Harlequin romance novels, old technical handbooks, and past IKEA or JC Penney catalogs! Occasionally there was the political memoir or self help book. Every book ... read more

Sorry to leap ahead to the end of the story here, but it is my last day in India. I have the rest of my time in the North yet to post - I wrote it by hand on the trip, and I haven't had a chance to type it all in yet. Since we've been back in Hyderabad, we've been wrapping up our business. Mainly, this means finding some way to pack up all of the cool things we bought into 4 bags, each no more than 23kg. 23kg is a surprisingly low maximum weight for a bag - just a normal sized travel suitcase full of clothes weighs this much. If you're trying to carry much else, you'll go over. And, I've observed this week, word gets out quickly that someone is flying to ... read more

Today I accompanied a group of German Protestant ministers (here at HMI for a conference) to Hyderabad’s ‘Old City’, where HMI operates a health clinic and elementary school. This was my first chance to see the city, and so I jumped at the chance to be chauffeured as part of a tour instead of trying to navigate the bus system. The school is called the Aman Shanti School, and is purposely placed in an area of the city that has seen a lot of sectarian violence. The Hindu and Muslim communities are separated only by one street, and rarely do the two mix. HMI began the school following the riots in 1992 in order to remain a permanent presence and face of peace in the community. I hope that the pictures I took of the school ... read more

Hi, Everyone-- Well, I have arrived in Hyderabad and am slowly getting comfortable with life here. I have taken some pictures of my school, my dormitory, and the surrounding areas that I've posted here. So far, the worst thing that has happened is that the mosquitoes are eating me alive. I have to go and get some repellent. Yesterday marked the beginning of regularity here at HMI. My Persian teacher is trained in classical Persian. He last studied English in 1995, and so we have some difficulty understanding each other. Because he communicates better in Persian than in English, we mostly communicate in Persian. I have tutorials with him for three hours, Monday thru Friday. The culture here is completely different from what I am used to. It seems there is a holiday almost every other ... read more

The Debashish Bhattacharya concert was really, really good. Some of the things he says on his website may sound a little excessively self-promoting, but he really is incredible. The concert was in an open-air amphitheater in the new "Hi-Tech City" part of Hyderabad. There is a lot of construction going on out there, and with construction and road-closures everywhere, we arrived at the concert an hour late. What's worse, when we showed up, we discovered that it was by invitation only! By some amazing act of fate, just as the gatekeeper was turning us away, someone inside the venue noticed Priya's dad, and said "Kamalakar, sir! I'm glad you could make it!", and with that we were whisked inside and seated near the mixing board. It turns out that the concert had been organized by a ... read more

I've taken it easy in Hyderabad after the Goa debacle. It's been nice to be back on familiar terrain, and the peacefulness of my room at Priya's parents' apartment. I'm even used to the noise here - honking horns, all kinds of banging and whistling, and the frequent calls-to-prayer of the neighborhood mosque. Actually, I kind of missed all of the noise! Yesterday, we went to see the Nizam's jewels at the Salar Jung museum in the old part of Hyderabad. The Nizams were the dynasty of muslim rulers of the state of Hyderabad which formerly occupied a large area of central south India. This region of India has for years produced some of the largest diamonds in the world. The kooh-i-noor, the largest cut diamond in the world (now part of the British crown jewels ... read more

Happy 2006! I spent the last day of 2005 doing not too much. My hosts had several errands to run in the morning, and I was happy to have some time to do some reading. For lunch, we went to the Grand Kakatiya hotel, a 5-star hotel which seems to cater to western visitors. It is all marble and chandeliers inside, and it has several great restuarants. We went to the "Deccan Pavilion", which serves a buffet of foods from the part of India around Hyderabad (known as "The Deccan"). The food was a delicious mixture of lentils, yoghurt, spices, and vegetables I've never heard of before. I wrapped up my meal with my favorite Indian dessert, gulab jamun, which is basically a fried ball of donut dough soaked in sugar syrup. Mmmmmm. After lunch, I ... read more

Today's main event was a journey to the Golconda Fort, the castle of the Muslim kings of the state of Hyderabad in the 1500's and 1600's. The Fort follows the same plan of European castles and fortified towns. There is a large defensive wall around the ancient town of Golconda, and on one side there is the citadel, Golconda Fort, which contains the royal palace, the armory, soldiers barricks, and several giant cisterns intended to carry the town through a seige. The citadel itself is beautifully constructed, with interiors of vaulted arches. The staircase leading up to the highest point of the citadel has very wide stairs, designed to allow the riding of horses up to the top. Most of the defensive feature of the citadel are fairly standard in castle construction. Basically, the problem was ... read more

Last night I slept like a rock. I thought I was over my jetlag, but my body had a different idea. I remember turning out the light, and hitting the bed, but I was out after that. At 5:45, I was briefly awakened by the call-to-prayer of the neighborhood mosque. The call-to-prayer is made 5 times a day, and by now I've gotten used to it - in fact, it is kind of comforting. Several times on my previous trips to Europe, I would wake up from a jetlagged stupor in a dark room and literally have no idea where I was. Here, the call-to-prayer quickly reminds me where I am. This morning, reassured, I went back to sleep. At 8:30, I stumbled out, finding that my hosts had been up since 6:30 and had already ... read more

Today, Priya and I went to meet her friend Sanaa and altogether we went to a large craft fair in the Jubilee hills section of Hyderabad. Last night, riding in from the airport at 5am was obviously not representative of the traffic here. Today, I got to see the real deal. From Priya's to Sanaa's, we took an auto-rickshaw (simply called an "auto" here). Catching an auto involved walking down the street from the apartment and waking an auto driver sleeping in the back set of his auto. Note that he couldn't have been comfortable - an auto is basically a moped with a bench and enclosure bolted on. They're tiny and open to the air/smoke/dust/beggars that you encounter on the road. In the open air of the rickshaw, you get the full appreciation of the ... read more
