So, what's been happening in the happening Hong Kong... I shall fill you in!
Well, actually it's that time where it's nearly pay day, but not quite, so it's been relatively quiet!
I've had another Putonghua lesson, it's quite hard! Although, I did watch the new film "Lust, caution" last night, and recognized all of three words! It was in Putonghua with Cantonese and English subtitles. Some of the film was set in Hong Kong as well.
There is a lovely area called Knutsford Terrace in TST that we went to after the Putonghua lesson last week, and we watched a friend Belly dancing in a restaurant.
On Thursday, I had to attend Parents night at school, so spent a few hours after school exploring the New Town plaza in Sha Tin, which is yet another shopping mall. Had some dinner, and then we headed back to school to basically wave at all the parents as they came in! It wasn't the most thrilling evening, but looked good for the school I guess - having three native speakers on the door! Then we headed out for ladies night in Lan Kwai Fong which was good fun.
Busy Shopping
New Town Plaza Shopping Centre, Sha Tin I had a lovely three day weekend thanks to Cheung Yeung Festival...never actually found out what happens, all I was told was that it is a family thing, but to be honest I was just happy to have another 4 day week! After going out on Thursday night, I spent Friday by a pool in Kowloon park, enjoying the sunshine and also doing some swimming! I strolled around Kowloon park, a good place to escape the rest of the city that surrounds it. Later, I had some good sushi for dinner, and watched a film round a friends house.
Then on Saturday I started Saturday school teaching at Yan Laap school in Kowloon, doing three 1 hour lessons for a bit of extra money. Then asap... I headed for the beach! Stanley beach on HK Island, where there is a lovely little market and some nice restaurants along the water front. We chilled out on a little beach for a while and then we were craving some good British fish and chips! We found a deal for some fish chips and beer, so sat outside and enjoyed a lovely meal. The patriotic amongst us complained that it was not
The Countdown...
Counting down to the Beijing Olympics in Kowloon Park technically fish and chips, as they were in fact fish goujons and potato wedges! I enjoyed it!
After a stroll through the market, we headed back for an early night, enjoying the lovely feeling that there was yet another day to the weekend! Sunday for me, involved my gym class, and then a trip to the fruit market. In the afternoon, I went to Tai Mei Tuk near Tai Po in the new territories. It was a lovely little place where I took a rowing boat out on the huge reservoir with a friend, and then cycled along a big reservoir crossing, watching the sun go down slowly behind an island, it was so nice to be out of the city and see some lovely natural things like islands and water and the sunset! It sounsd simple, but living in Mongkok, I appreciate them all the more! I attempted to fly a kite as well, but wasn't all that successful! There were lots of people around flying kites though, the sky was speckled with them - quite the thing to do. After a lovely meal in a restaurant decorated with fairy lights, we headed back to the bustling Mongkok,
Contrast
I think contrast is the only word for this picture. Taken from Kowloon Park awaiting Monday morning!
In case you were wondering, this blog is called an update from Octopus land, because HK has a brilliant thing called an octopus card! Similar to an Oyster card, you can scan in and out of all the MTR and KCR train stations, you can get on minibuses and buses with it, and you can shop with it! Some days you needn't touch any cash! You top up your octopus card, and off you go! I love it! Hence....Octopus land!
